Astros 10, Reds 2

The Reds' winning streak ended at three games. Bronson Arroyo isn't buying the theory that those two high-pitch outings on the West Coast have anything to do with his recent struggles.

Arroyo went five innings Thursday night, allowing eight runs on 11 hits. He's 0-2 with a 16.36 ERA in his three starting since throwing 129 pitches in the San Diego. He threw 117 in the start before that in L.A.

“It’s completely (coincidence),” he said. “Tonight, I felt as good as I've felt this season by far. I had good velocity, a good breaking ball, good command. When you go through a stretch like this, sometimes you don’t get the luck or whatever you want to call it.”

Arroyo is big on the long-season theory -- even when he's going good.

“I've had 12 starts and I've had three bad ones,” he said.

But he admits it’s hard not to shake things up.

“That’s the hardest thing about being in a bad stretch in baseball,” he said. “Not to change things, (knowing) that the results aren't always an indication of how you’re feeling or how you throw the ball.”

“The other guys get paid for a reason, too. Sometimes you get beat around the yard.”

Isn't really Bronson hurt? I hope he'll be better soon. By the way, why do we have to keep Stanton?

Yeah, but he's been beaten up by the lousy Nats, puny Pirates, and sad-sack Astros. "Any given Sunday" and all, but that part worries me, too.

and a 120 pitch outing before the 117 pitch game.

After last weeks pirate game, I thought something was wrong with Bronson, be it a "dead-arm" or something else. Now I am certain of it. He just doesn't have command of his pitches, especially his fastball, which used to be pretty decent, but now is not topping 88mph. I hate to say it when the Reds desperately need our #2 starter, but he needs to miss a start or two to see if he can get some of it back. - MB

Jerry Narron should have pinch hit for Arroyo with the bases loaded and Reds down 4-0. Arroyo had pitched decently to that point, but it was golden opportunity to get back in the game, and effectively give Arroyo a night off, which he seems to need. In any case, how much longer can the Reds afford to wait to unvail Homer Bailey? Will his off-speed stuff really improve that much in the next couple of months? This club needs an infusion of energy, and Homer Bailey could be the Reds' Francisco Liriano or, if they want to use him out of the pen, the Reds' Brandon McCarthy. In either case, no one on the staff truly dazzles ... and Bailey just may.

I want to first start by saying I am a fan of Bronson Arroyo...that said, maybe his poor performance this year has been due to an increased number of performances play the guitar for the Reds Community Fund. I know that this is part of what makes Bronson Bronson, but if it is a distraction to what your primary job is, pitching, then maybe you should ease up a bit and concentrate on the pitching more. I primarily blame the Reds for this, I'm sure Arroyo wouldn't seek the number of scheduled appearences he has made so far this year. Last year at this time he had made very few appearences playing music and had a great era and now look at it...

I think the "real" Arroyo wasn't worth Wily Mo and resembles this year's version far more than last year's. Last year was a fluke for him. He's a career 4.50 ERA man. He's over 4.70 so far this year. Under .500 W/L% for his career, though just barely, Arroyo is not a long-term answer for building a Reds playoff team either. It's not just a two-game thing this year. It's the real Arroyo. If the Reds can get two young pitching prospects for Arroyo, or more, they should do so. Of course unless Arroyo returns to early last year's form, the Reds look stuck with him. A nice player to have on the team insofar as rooting for him and his occasional flashes of brilliance, but maybe not talented enough to take his game to a level the Reds need. I hope I'm wrong. And hopefully Wily Mo won't become a David Ortiz type HR producer (Ortiz career 16.01 AB/HR versus Wily's 17.90 AB/HR). To those who say "trade Dunn" I say: Manny Ramirez 14.15 AB/HR; Dunn 14.25 AB/HR) It is the kind of thinking that traded Wily Mo for a 4.50 ERA pitcher that may get us a what? A 4.25 career starter for Dunn? Incidentally, with Hamilton at 14.875 AB/HR, it looks as if with Dunn and Hamilton the Reds have two pieces of a World Championship puzzle. Keep them both. If Arroyo gets hot again, trade him!

Is it time to become critical of Bronson? He has not been that good since he started 9-0 last season. What's his record since then? Do you think the NL has just caught up to him and his 9-0 start last year was a result of him being new to the NL? Just because a guy is in a cover band, doesn't mean we should expect less as a pitcher. He's been Milton-esque for the last year.

He's been hurt ever since Jerry Morron let him go 129 pitches in San Diego which is far too many.

It would be a little harder to trade Arroyo because as a player in the middle of a multi-year deal he could demand his new team trade him in the offseason. I don't think it's time to panic and trade Arroyo after a few bad starts.
