From Mackanin

The post All-Star Break rotation:

Bronson Arroyo Thursday v. the Mets
Aaron Harang Friday v. the Mets
Matt Belisle Saturday v. the Mets
Kyle Lohse Sunday v. the Mets
Homer Bailey v. the Braves

"You how I chose that?" Mackanin said. "Dick told me what to do."

Mackanin deferred to pitching coach Dick Pole in other words.

Other tidbits:

--Bill Bray is close. He's throwing two inning tomorrow.

--Mackanin would like to catch Javy Valentin three days a week.

John- what do you think about not using Bailey for so long. I figured the Reds would like to get him as much experience as possible and this move could cost him a start or two across the rest of the season. I understand they don't want to over use him, but if they threw him third he would still be getting an extra day's rest. I'm not really as excited about seeing Belisle throw in the third spot.

Also I don't think I've seen you make any predictions about who the Reds might be trading prior to the deadline. Of this list of candidates who do you think will be traded (Dunn, Griffey, Hatteberg, Loshe, Stanton, Weathers)?

Thanks,
Redbeard

As long as the Reds are hitting like they are tonight, Macanin can get his pitching rotation from a taxi driver in Newport, and bat Valentin cleanup 7 days a week, and no one will care.

One of the reasons, Bailey is fifth is Mets like to run. I'd try to keep his innings to reasonable number also.

I think the Reds would listen to offers for everyone on that list, with possible exception of Griffey. Lohse's stock is rising as we speak.

John
Could you please find out who took over for GCL Reds for Pat Kelly? I try to keep up with all the reds minor league teams.

Rick Burleson took over temporarily. They'll probably have a permanent guy in 10 days or so.

Don't look too much into this, but I do like Mackanin's candor. He's been pretty forthcoming and direct. His comment regarding the lineup is fairly entertaining and he's been pretty straight, specifically regarding performance, i.e. Behlisle.

Why is Belisle even still in the rotation? He's had half a season to prove that he's not very good, so why not give Livingston the chance? Send Belisle to the pen; what is there to lose?
