Easy Eddie

Eddie Encarnacion went deep with a three-run shot in the Caribbean World Series last night. That's his fourth three-run homer since the Winter League playoffs started by my count.

Someone with the Reds suggested that Encarnacion will benefit more from Dusty Baker's presence than any other player.

I'm not big on predictions. But I think Encarnacion will have a big year, and it's important to the Reds that he does to help balance the lineup. He's as good as the Reds have with runners in scoring position -- .947 OPS with runners in scoring position and a 1.197 OPS with the bases loaded.

What was that rationale behind EE benefitting from Dusty's presence?

I have no opinion on the issue, but/so am curious about the thinking behind it. It is as simple as:

Talented 25-year-old Latin 3b + Dusty = Aramis Ramirez, Part II?

Situational hitting stats are notoriously flaky (and a 20-plate-appearance sample size for the bases loaded figure is basically nil), but the crazy thing is that 2008 was EE's worst year in that situation. For his career, he has a 1340 OPS with the bases loaded (45 PA), and an absurd .515 AVG on balls put in play).

Any word on the MLB Trade Rumor thoughts on the Reds renewed interest in Blanton?

You would figure two years in the bigs basically, that yes he's reqady for a break out. His second half stats i think prove that out.

What I think what is overlooked his how much his defense has improved since he came up.

Right on John with EE. I think that if is just left in the 4th spot in the order he will exceed 110 RBI. It's hard to realize he just turned 25 in January. It would have been nice though for him to get more rested up during the off-season. I don't want to see him fade down the stretch-run.

I agree I think he will have a nice year, but what most impressed me was his ability to improve his defense after being demoted last year.
