Keppinger, Janish

From the Reds' media relations:

Today the Reds placed on the 15-day disabled list SS Jeff Keppinger (fractured left kneecap) and recalled from Class AAA Louisville IF Paul Janish (pronounced YAH-nish)…Janish will wear uniform number 7.

Keppinger suffered the injury on a foul ball in the second inning of last night's game…he is scheduled to have an MRI later today.

When he plays Janish will become the second Reds player this season to make his Major League debut (RHP Johnny Cueto)...Janish has spent the season at Class AAA Louisville and in 35g for the Bats hit .293 (4 2b, 1 3b, 4hr, 20rbi, 2sb)...he hit safely in each of his last 7g there (10-26, .384).

Terrible news for Keppinger and the Reds. I saw Janish play a couple of times in Sarasota this spring and he is an excellent fielder. The question will be if he can add to the offense in any meaningful way. Given Dusty's proven bias toward veterans and his former players, expect that Jerry Hairston, Jr. will be the starting SS for now.

This kid's solid...and Hairston may be in his 30s and a bit on the short side, but the guy's an athlete. He's got wheels! 3 steals, a triple, he moves very well - good guy to have for all positions; him and Freel together make this a much, much deeper team.
