It really doesn't matter what the Reds do in this current economic system. MLB is designed to reward the teams with the deepest pockets. I hear it's the player's association that is the main culprit. The Reds don't spend as much as the Cards, Cubs and Astros. Until they do, they won't be competitive in the NL Central.
So, the Reds need to up their payroll to around $90-100 million, hire the best managers and coaches money can buy and stock the minors with the best instructors out their.
and it wouldn't hurt to beat the pirates today either.
Hey John, when do we get to enjoy you coming around to the idea that the manager needs to go? A week more of play like this, two weeks? When do you enter the fold?
Uh, hey Pat. Have you seen Milwaukee's paroll -- and where they are in the standings? Compare them to the Chicagos, the St. Louis', and Houstons and tell me your theory still holds up.

I was waiting for someone to mention the Brew Crew. They haven't been over 500 since 1992 and started well this year, but are 4-11 in the past two weeks. I think they will contend this year, but can they keep it up. Can they keep their good players. Carlos Lee is already gone. Will they be able to keep Capuano, Cordero or sheets?
It's not that small market teams can't contend sometimes. It's the fact that large market teams have an advantage.
But, I agree you have to spend the money wisely.
