Jr. on Bonds

Barry Bonds and the Giants open a three-game series against the Reds on Tuesday at Great American Ball Park. Bonds enters play today with 750 career home runs, five away from tying Hank Aaron's all-time home run record.

Reds outfielder Ken Griffey Jr., who is nearing 600 career home runs, spent some time chatting with reporters in the clubhouse this morning about Bonds, whom he has known since childhood.

Here are some of the highlights:

- "We don’t battle each other. You guys, the media, do all the comparisons - who’s better or who’s this and who’s that. To us, we’re two sons playing a game that our dad’s played. His dad was different than my dad, different style ballplayer and I’m different than he is."

- "My first year in (Class) A ball I had to go to the instructional league. I got to Arizona and didn’t know anybody but one person: Barry. Barry called me and said, ‘Hey, I’m coming to get you.’ I said, ‘How long will you be?’ He said, ‘I’ll be there in two minutes.’ He came up there and took me out to eat, introduced me to a couple friends of his. He said, ‘Hey, if I’m not here these guys will help you out any way they can.'"

- Is Bonds getting a fair shake? "I say innocent until proven guilty. Everybody deserves the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. That's not just him, that's everybody in society as well."

- Did he think somebody would threaten to break Hank Aaron's all-time home run record? "The only thing I don't think is possible is Cy Young. But I think everything else can be broken. I just don't think somebody can beat (827) decisions."

There's more proof of Bonds' guilt than O.J.'s guilt...please! Griffey apparently wouldn't cooperate with the police if one of his "friends" shot him. I hate that kind of mentality. I don't care how nice Bonds was to you, Junior, the guy took steroids (massive amounts too), the visual proof (even without Shadow Game's recounting of all the evidence) is enough. Only fools look at bodybuilders who get as big or bigger than Barry and think, "oh, he did that naturally."

I hate intellectual dishonesty. Loyalty is nice but if you have to go defend someone as obviously guilty as Bonds don't start pretending that he's entitled to a presumption of innocence after parading around his steroid-bloated body and magically DOUBLED HR capacity. The only appropriate comment for Griffey on the subject of Bond's steriod use is "no comment."

You guys in the press let "superstar" athletes get away with so much verbal nonsense. I wonder what Griffey thinks of Canseco, Giambi, and McGwire? Also innocent despite looking and performing CLEARLY GUILTY? I smell a double standard! Oh wait, those guys never cuddled Junior...never mind!

By the way, nice win yesterday. I love it when they pretend to be a major league team with a competent manager!

30 games under .500 coming soon to a team that will remain in last place until fans start putting pressure on Castellini.

But hey, if you so-called Reds "fans" love your team so much you don't care whether they win or not then you DESERVE EACH OTHER.

There was a great article in the Onion last winter about Bonds. The pretext was that every fan in America knew that Bonds used steroids. Only the sports writers were clueless. So the article quoted fans freely - "Oh yeah - I knew. Hell, everyone knew, like when he shaved his head - you know, steroids cause your hair to fall out." It was a good laugh.

I hope that when Bonds clubs the one that ties Aaron, and the one that beats him, that he is greeted at the plate with a loud chorus of boos.

The other day I made a recommendation to ANONYMOUS that he get a life...ditto to Justin!

If there is proof that Bonds used steroids, then lets get some indictments and let a criminal court decide. Innocent until proven guilty. So far there have been no indictments and only speculation by the uniformed.
If the federal prosecutors have a case lets see it. Otherwise get off Barry's back!!!!

Gary214, your intellectual contribution to Fay's blog is "get a life?" Wow! How very impressive and entertaining. I can't believe the Enquirer hasn't offered you Fay's job yet!

You guys spend more time wondering if bonds did or did not. Who cares when all the players were getting bigger and bigger nobody cared. All of a sudden everybody walks around acting like he did something so wrong. If he did or did not it is still very impressive to hit over 750 home runs. SO GET A LIFE.

Whether Bonds took steroids or not it's not that important. It's just baseball. Think about Iraq, healthcare and other stuff that affects lives and calm down. Enjoy the game.

I rest my case, Justin...

Anyone who is a Pete Rose fan in Cincinnati would be incredibly hypocritcal to criticize Bonds for his achievements.

Glad you're happy Gary, why not swill a second case?

at 6:05 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

More loopy reasoning on display, why don't you guys stop blogging while intoxicated? Rose committed crimes. He didn't set a baseball record by committing a crime. Whether Bonds' steroid use is a crime is highly debatable but there's no doubt that: (1) Bonds took plenty of anabolic steroids; (2) Bonds' records are the records of a cheater and deserve an asterisk; and (3) yes baseball is less important than serious geopolitical issues but this is a baseball blog so go away if you hate reading about baseball and Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame for his on-field honesty and Bonds should never be in Cooperstown due to his on-field dishonesty.

And that's how it is, like it or not!

Question: The British Church thinks floods are "God's judgment" on the world, so why aren't the 2007 Reds "God's judgment" on you guys who love to make excuses for Narron and Bonds and Krivsky and Castellini?

Answer: Because God doesn't abuse the feeble-minded.

Pete Rose didn't take steroids. Don't compare apples and oranges.

at 7:30 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

What good would it do Griffey to comment on Bonds' steroid use? It's a no win situation for him. If I was in his position, I wouldn't say anything either. We all know Bonds used them. Why do we need to hear it from Griffey or anyone else not involved in steroids?

at 7:38 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The comparison to Rose is absolutely baseless. Rose never cheated. He never did anything that gave himself an unfair advantage over his opposition, or more importantly over the record books. Yes, he broke the rules, bet on baseball, and thus has been kicked out of baseball for good. But every single one of his hits was due entirely to his God given talent (more realistically it was his hustle, as he didn't have a tenth of the talent of a player like Bonds). What he did may have tarnished how people saw him as an individual, but not what he did on the field. Bonds is disliked by so many because he is about to break the holiest of records in all of American sports, and we all know that he cheated to get it done. I feel 100% comfortable calling him a cheater, and even though Bonds will stand at the podium as he is inducted into Cooperstown, I will know that Pete will always be more deserving than Bonds of such an honor.

This is silly. Bonds already admitted to using the cream or the clear or whatever it was. It doesn't matter. Many in baseball were using, including pitchers, and baseball knew. Players knew and didn't want testing so they could raise salaries. Owners knew and didn't want to do anything because attendance increased. THe commissioner knew and did nothing. Therefore, baseball for doing nothing deserves what it gets from this.

Regardless of how any of you feel about Bonds, if you look at the numbers prior to the spike, he was still going to be a hall of famer for 500 HR and 500 steals. So stop losing sleep over it.

All of the players in baseball today can't hold a candle to Pete Rose. No one played with as much heart and hustle as Pete did. To bad he made bad choices as a manager. The fact is it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out the roid users.

Please remember, Pete's NOT allowed in The Hall of Fame. Poor analogy.

Justin Fernandez. Must be one of those pencil-necked geeks who is jealous of people who work hard and build muscles of steel. What happened to you, Justin? Did you lose a girlfriend to the muscle man who kicked sand in your face at the beach?

There is absolutely no evidence Barry Bonds took steroids, there is no one who has evidence that he did, and he admits to taking none. What I do know is that he spent hours in the gym to build a body that could compete for the long-haul. And it can be done. If you wish to know how without steroids, write me and I'll send you the plan along with the diet. I guarantee 30 pounds of muscle in six months or less, and you'll keep the weight with a minor maintenance program. My only caution is to make certain you visit a sports physician regularly, like Barry.

America: You can't trust the Justin Fernandez's of the world who arrogantly scream in e-mail by using all caps as in "DESERVE EACH OTHER". He (I presume, could be wrong since he's whining like a b____) uses "intellectual" too much. That means he's not.

And, his use of the word "cuddled" when I believe he meant "coddled" is a Freudian slip. If Justine had a few more cuddles when he was younger, perhaps his attitude would have improved by now.

Oh, and God never abused anyone, which is the final nail in Justin's coffin. Amen, brother.

George Hale, I'm glad to see John Fay didn't sensor you. Logic, accuracy, and a keen discerning mind as you demonstrate are not a requirement to get posted here after all!

Fay doesn't let me call Narron "Winnie the Pooh" or "D---" on this blog but he let's you have your 15 minutes of "out of the straight jacket" sayso because Fay dislikes (like many of you "in-love-with losing" Reds apologists) facts which is what I use to post (all-caps are neither arrogant nor screaming they're just for emphasis, you Narron!)

Your main point seemed to be that weightlifting alone could turn a skinny Barry into an Arnoldesque Barry. That is a lie. And you know it!

The pro bodybuilding industry is built on the myth of protein and pumping iron equals huge. I happen to personally know much more about the subject than you apparently do!

Anyone can vastly improve their muscle strength and size with MANY YEARS of hard, dedicated training and lots of good nutrition and rest, but it is IMPOSSIBLE to do what Bonds did to himself without steroids.

Bonds took steroids. Read "Shadow Game" but more to the point just look at pre-cattle steroid and post-cattle steroid Barry.

He's gone from thin to huge to much much smaller (just like Slammin' Sammy Sosa and Jason Jabbin' Giambi) and it's not because they suddenly reduced their protein intake or diet.

Bonds is why I like Griffey Junior so much. He at least stayed clean, although I hear that he also stayed away from weighttraining a bit too much during his early career, and that might have made him a little more vulnerable to injuries.

Whatever Griffey is doing this year, I hope he can keep doing it!

He just shouldn't have started defending his minor league CUDDLE buddy for being a "victim" of accusations that cannot be proved.

Some things are self-evident. Like your self-delusional talents!

at 12:27 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Shadow Game is the first novel in the Ghostwalker Series of paranormal/romance by Christine Feehan. What's a tough guy like you doing reading that? I know you're way out there with your unsubstantiated accusations, but...

You mentioned cattle. Calfalac is a good protein substitute for body-building. Try it, you'll like it.

Oh, and I'm glad the Reds canned Narron.

A quote from Steve Pavlin that applies to you: "Personal growth is more than merely conditioning yourself to feel better about your life. While some people clearly need an attitudinal adjustment to make progress, the optimal attitude for personal growth doesn’t arise from self-delusional positive thinking. You don’t need positive thinking for personal growth. You simply need intelligence."

Something you clearly don't exhibit in your writings. Back up with facts, Justin. Your rants a are becoming a bore and your bigotry obvious.

at 10:11 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Justin, your rants are becoming more boring with every 'caps lock'! FYI, I don't drink, I am not a 'wanna be' jock (like the Justin's of the world), and I do not feel the need to overdramatize my every point. The latter is usually a sign of insecurity.

Bonds took steroids, OJ is a murderer. Period. Courts don't get to hear every case of professional sports cheating and courts' verdicts are not always correct.

Also, only a racist screams "bigotry" each and every time criticism is leveled on the facts and wholly apart from race.

I just hope Griffey stays healthy, plays six more season with 500 ABs+ each. Then we'll have a real HR champion to replace Balco Barry. Until then (or until A-Rod gets in the mix) Aaron will be the true (and worthy) HR king no matter how many jacks Barry has, if only because without steroids Bonds is still in the 500s (which of course is excellent and no one is saying Bonds isn't a great player, it's just that his personal ethics are as poor as his natural gifts are abundant).

If you guys want to worship cheaters and murderers have at it.

I'll continue to root for the Griffeys of the world, and against the wackos who make a hobby, if not a profession, out of lying.

at 7:12 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Justin, you just don't get it: Bigotry has very little to do with race. Intolerance is your issue. You have opinions not facts. Your opinions are intolerant of other views. That's bigotry. And, I didn't scream, Justin.

And, you did it again, Justin. I'm no racist: I'm White, my wife is Black. Your bigotry shines brighter than fireworks on the 4th of July.

I'm done.
