Minor matters

From Jamie Ramsey, who puts out the finest minor leauge reports in Reds history:

Louisville’s first inning run proves to be the game winner at Scranton/WB…Homer Bailey continues to shine (5.2ip, 4h, 0r, 1bb, 7k)…Jay Bruce RBI-double…The Lookouts fall in 11 innings…Daryl Thompson outstanding again (6ip, 2h, 0r, 1bb, 8k)…Luis Bolivar with 3 more hits…Drew M. Anderson goes deep…Cody Strait 3-for-5…Sarasota tames the Tigers…Jordan Smith (7ip, 5h, 0r, 0bb, 7k) outduels phenom Rick Porcello…Juan Francisco with 2 hits (RBI-double)…Dayton wins, thanks to Todd Frazier’s walkoff homer…it was Frazier’s 2nd homer of the game…and speaking of home runs, yep, Brandon Waring hit another one…Phil Valiquette sharp in relief (3.2 perfect innings, 4k).

* Dayton’s Todd Frazier and Brandon Waring have hit 6 of the team’s 7 homers, collected 12 of the club’s 20 RBI and scored 14 of Dayton’s 21 runs.

It's nice to see the low amount of walks given out by the pitchers in the minors. Hopefully this is a new and lasting trend with the pitchers.

I tried to find out which teams Drew Stubbs and Devin Mesaroca were on but didn't see them listed on any rosters. Any ideas what happen to them?

Great to see our young AAA's rising to the occasion.

The Marlins went thru similar cuts with Longoria et al. Interesting article from the Hearald about Vets and player development.

"Several Marlins say Luis Gonzalez's presence is a big reason for the elimination of the frat-house, infantile behavior that hurt last year's clubhouse. . . . Cameron Maybin is off to a strong start at Double A Carolina (7 for 15, including two homers and a triple) and a .619 on-base average, but his strikeouts (four) will be monitored. Andre Dawson, among the Marlins officials who will scout Maybin, plans to talk to him about ``not getting himself out on pitches that aren't strikes.''

Will we see Homer up next week if Fogg gets shelled again tonight?

Stubbs is in Sarasota playing for the Reds. I really like what Chris Valaika has done so for also. He has produced since the Reds drafted him two years ago. I like what Daryl Thompson has done also. He is a solid young pitcher.

wow...just came across this. i guess the blue jays tried to get Cueto in 2006 when Krivsky took over, and low-balled us.

How hard was Bailey throwing in his second outing?

redblooded,

Stubbs is playing in Sarasota. I think he is hitting in the 260-280 range and has a 3 SB's. If I remember correctly, then he even has more walks than strikeouts. That would be a very promising development for him this season (as it would be for every Red).

I think Mesaroca is in extended spring training. But I'm not sure about that. I know that he is very promising and very green. He may not be ready to go full tilt yet. He's young (only 18?) and probably 3-4 years away from a major league roster.

http://www.redsminorleagues.com/ is a good blog to check out.

john,
I see that pettyjohn and lehr both have made nice starts the first week at louisville. both around around 30 years old and pitched very few innings for the reds in sarasota. do either still have an upside or are they taking up space. i don't really know where they came from.
see that bailey is limiting his walks.. only thin g is that his pitch count was still pretty high for just getting into the sixth.
do you think that we might need another pitcher to eat some innings with some of the young guys. especially if baker will be watching pitch counts. i know that a lot of people like valentin... but he might be a luxury we can't afford. hatteberg can be your main left handed pinch hitter... and bako really calls a nice game.
roenicke might eat some innings.

It is great to see the Reds building a strong farm system again. It bodes well for the future, speaks highly of ownership and should end this string of loosing teams in Reds uniforms. There is no reason Cincinnati cannot build and organization like the Braves and Cardinals have, consistent winners.

I just recieved my copy of the Joe Nuxhall tribute book offered by the Enquirer. Anyone who has thought about getting one and is indecisive, don't be. It is a great book and a true tribute to Joe Nuxhall. For what it is worth, I highly recommend it for all Reds fans and fans of humanity in general. Can't wait to get into the DVD that comes with it!

JC, I would imagine that Valentin goes on the DL on the 14th when Ross can come back.

He could not run last night and catching is not the best rehab for a Hammy

I was at the Dayton Dragons game last night and Frazier is the real deal he carried the team last night. I would not be surprised if we see him soon up in AA

Not even close John Fay about your comment about Ramsey.

Nobody, and I mean, nobody puts out better minor league reports than Doug Gray.

Ramsey could work for him and that's Ramsey's upside.

While the curveball is as good as advertised, Seattle fans are still waiting for the promised 90 plus MPH heat from Bedard. He has not been Aaron Harrang so far for the M's....

I am so happy with the movement of the Dominican Dandies (plural) that who cares if we don't have a lefty in the rotation.

Homer, get well soon. Glad we still have you
