Reds Insider From news of the day to news of the weird, John Fay provides a glimpse of what it’s like to cover the Cincinnati Reds
John Fay has been the Reds beat writer for the Enquirer since 2001. Prior to that, he served in a variety of roles for the Enquirer: backup Reds writer, UC beat writer, backup Bengals writer and as a general assignment reporter. He is a Cincinnati native and a graduate of Elder High School and the University of Dayton.
He sounds like it is the first time he has ever done it. Sounds like he will loose his voice if he keeps belting out the words - - sounds like he is trying too hard. Also, Thom seems to be talking alot during Brantley's play-by-play time. But, they are going to be great to listen to for years to come.
To be honest he doesn't sound too bad, he's just not being real specific about the gameplay. Doing a fine job though for his first time. Criticized Dunn for taking two fastballs right down the heart of the plate.

i agree with anon, but i think thom is trying to save him because jeff is giving color during his play by play time. he has changed his voice, like he is trying to sound like a carey. his laugh is canned, i like him alot better when he talks normal.
He is great as the color commentator but he really struggled with the play by play in the 3rd and 4th.
Sometimes hard to follow and didn't say the score after the top of the 3rd. Thom keeps stepping in to try to help him. He has 2 great teachers in the Brennaman duo- he'll be ready to go come the regular season.
He's doing fine as the color guy. His play by play stint was a bit rough. Hard to follow the action. Once he realizes there are no video highlights behind him that the listeners are watching I think he'll be OK.
I am in Alabama(on the beach) for the winter and cant get the game on the internet. I know regular season is blacked out but didnt know the Grapefruit league was blacked out.
He sounds like a young Harry Caray. He brings the only thing Thom and Marty can't... a player's prospective. I am looking forward to his flavor during the season.
Sounds to me like he has a hard time getting his thoughts out quick enough to be a play-by-play announcer. He reacts to a play but doesn't start describing immediately what is happening. You are left wondering until he catches up. Also, sometimes after a pitch he fails to let you know if it was a strike or a ball.
He sounds like he'll be a good color guy. He obviously knows the game and enjoys it, but to a be a play by play guy, he'll have to improve a lot.
Come on,folks, give him a break. This is just his first time and I thought he did pretty good. The Reds need some fresh and new commentators and this is a step in the right direction. I really like the changes they have made. Time for Joe to 'round third and head for home' and turn it over to he 'younger' guys.
Agree that he isn't real specific doing play by play. But his insight into the game from an ex-player's perspective is really good. That was my problem with the Bad Boy. Nice Guy, good voice good at play by play but no perspective. Accent, you'd have one to if you came from Mississippi. That's where hes from, isn't he?
Brantley is good as a color guy, but currently has no business doing play by play. Listening to him it seemed like he was calling a national game for ESPN not a Reds broadcast, his calls were corny and non-descriptive. that being said I think he can be good given a few games under his belt.
Brantley was excellent as an analyst. He needs experience on play by play as he spmetimes forgets to tell you where the ball is going or who made the play. He will get better.

yeah, he does sound a little strained. interesting accent at times too. he didn't say a lot there after Phillips home run either.

Brantley sounds bad, but I think most of the problem is that he is sitting next to a great announcer in Thom Brennaman. Thom is a tough act to follow.
