Cool Robinson tribute by Griffey
Ken Griffey Jr. will wear No. 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson Sunday, April 15.
It was Griffey's idea. He called commissioner Bud Selig and got permission. All teams retired 42 on April 15, 1997, the 50th anniversary of Robinson's debut.
"I thought it would a good idea to wear it on the 60th," Griffey said. "I called Bud. We talked a few minutes. He said he's get back to me. He wanted to make sure it was OK with everyone."
Every team will have someone wear 42 April 15.
"This is a wonderful gesture on Ken's part and a fitting tribute to the great Jackie Robinson," Selig said in a statement, "and, I believe, all the clubs will eagerly endorse it. To make this happen, I gladly suspended the official retirement of uniform number 42 on that day."

Wow, classy move by Griffey and rare good decision by Selig!
Mr Griffey shows once again that he is a class act.
Griff gets such a bad rep from the way the media hounds him. I have had the opportunity of meeting Jr. and he is a class A guy. I was so impressed with how cool he was to me and my friends. Stood there and talked shop with us for 30 minutes. What a way to show his class. I will always support the Kid.

someone once suggested that each team designate a player to wear 42 for the entire year.
Sort of like a 'Jackie Robinson of the year award'

I think it’s great that Griffey came up with the ideal to wear the number. I think it’s great that every team will have a player wear 42. I, even think it’s great that all the Dodgers are wearing 42, since Robinson played for the Dodgers.
But, when the cards all do it; it up stages all the other teams that just have one player. I think the cards should rethink this and just have one player wear 42, like the other teams.
