Hermanson gone: Who closes?

The Reds released Dustin Hermanson. They wanted him to go to Louisville but he refused. I'm not at the workout, but I just talked to Kevin Kelly. Hermanson is a bit of shock but he got hit around his last few times out. And I have no idea what the radar guy was saying. Kevin said another move is coming. The Reds may set the roster at 24 and seek permission to add another tomorrow. No word on Eric Milton's status. Unless he can win a limbo championship tonight, I would think he's headed for DL with the back. The big question: Who closes? They could go back to Mike Stanton-David Weathers committee. But Jared Burton did save three games this spring. That's pure Moneyball -- take a guy with a great arm and put him in that position. Burton has the best stuff in the bullpen but he's never pitched in the majors.

I think Santos should close
It would be a lot like when Gagne became a closer.

That was actually Brantley who said that. Marty and Thom were questioning JB's statement as Hermanson was getting knocked around yesterday.

Thom didn't say that, Jeff Brantley did. Thoms quoted Jeff yesterday as Hermanson was throwing batting practice yesterday in Dayton as he gave up hit after hit after hit. Good move as far as I'm concerned.

I agree that it is a good move. I was rooting for Hermanson, but found it hard to believe that the Reds were so much smarter than all of the other teams that passed on him. I like to see them continue to give opportunities to the guys on their upside versus downside.

Anyone know what time the roster has to be set by?

Me thinks they are clearing a roster spot to sign the recently unretired Sid Fynch...

Otherwise, none of these moves make any sense.

Roster deadline was supposed to be 3 p.m. Sunday. My guess is they got permission to add someone tomorrow.

this whole thing is getting real confusing....they have 24...who is 25th..is it santos or livingston or is there a trade up krivskys sleeve? John Fay please give your opinion and try to clear things up for us!!!

I wasn't at the workout, so I haven't talked to Krivsky or Narron. A lot could be a work here. It may be as simple as they're deciding between Santos and Livingston. Or they may be trying to work a deal. Or they could need the spot for a waiver claim. Or a position player may be slightly hurt. Conine hasn't played in the field in a couple of days. Did like the Sid Finch reference on April 1.

john fay....as of now whats the rotation and what does the pen look like.... to my understanding this is how it stands:
1.Harang
2.Arroyo
3.loshe
4.Beslile
5.Sarloos.....who do you think is the 25th man....it seems it something kinda big because as the day goes on things get more confusing.....your opinion please...thanx!

I think that it is a really good move. Hermanson is at the end of his career. We need to give Burton and/or Coffey shots at the closers role if Stanton/Weathers fail. Stanton did fill in nicely for San Francisco last year lets not forget that. Weathers really came along nicely in the second half of the year. It could be worse...ole Danny Graves could be closing games still.

Good move. Stanton and Weathers had great second halfs last year. Things could be worse...Danny Graves could still be anchoring the pen.

I think they traded for Danny Graves.

John, these Closers by Committee never work. Let's go with Jared Burton and be bold for a change. Keep Stormy and Stanton in set-up mode. What do we have to lose?

My vote goes for Burton. The risk/Reward percentage or however you want to say it as far as using Burton instead of Stormy/Stanton is Highly in Favor for the Reward!!!! If Burton blows 3 saves out of his 5 or 6 opps then go to your backup plan of Stormy...etc. If Burton succeeds on 80%+ of his save opps. then you probably GAIN a 30 save closer and ROY for a rock bottom price (Burton's a Rule 5 like the "Hammer", correct?)

So you are risking 3 or 4 total wins if Burton "Flames out" as a potential closer compared to getting 30-35 Saves and a reward of at LEAST 8-9 more victories if Burton is a success. That's the way I see it. Burton and the Redlegs have nothing to lose in this situation.....
