Reds 11, Astros 2

That hitting the Reds have been promising is finally here. They’ve cranked out 28 runs on 41 hits in the last three games.

Ken Griffey Jr.’s presence in the lineup makes a difference. Jerry Narron said Griffey looked better in early BP than he’s looked all year. It showed: 3-for-3, HR, 2 RBI.

Bronson Arroyo finally got a win. He's 1-2 with 2.59 ERA.

But the thing that struck me most about Tuesday’s game was Brad Salmon’s outing. He hit 96 on the gun and was consistently at 95. The Reds haven’t had a guy with that kind of stuff in a while. If – a big if, mind you – he throws strikes, he can change game by coming in with that heat. He'll certainly be more useful than Rheal Cormier.

Reds are back to .500.

Did you see what Philip Hughes did in his start with Yankees? 6 1/3 hitless before he left after pulling a hamstring. He's the prospect rated just above or just below Homer Bailey depending on whose rating it is.

I keep hearing that Salmon's unlike anyone they have but doesn't Todd Coffey throw in the upper 90s?

I was watching the Yankees game. Hughes was amazing. Just dominating. A wicked, wicked curve. Not a particularly fast fastball, but his ability to locate it is unreal.

Heartbreaking end to a magical night. Hughes will be fine in the long run, I'm sure. Maybe this will even be a blessing in disguise, forcing the Yankees to bring him along slower.

Dunno what the Yankees are going to do about another starting pitcher, though. They asked Torre who was going to start in five days, and he said, "I have no idea."

John --

a couple questioons about David Ross:

1) His defense is great, no dispute there. regarding his hitting -- he seems to be in more than just a slump. Watching on TV, he reminds me of that look/feel when I go into the batting cages and select "fast" -- where he just can't catch up with major league pitching. His bat speed just seems slow, plain and simple. I realize he hit 20 HRS last year...but have you heard coaches or other insiders talking about this being more than just a slump?

And even though he got a hit -- why the hell was he swinging away 3-0 last night?

The best I've seen from Coffey is 93 this year. Salmon hit 96 and was at 95 on all but one other fastball I watched.
