Coffey up; Burton on the DL

From the Reds:

TODAY'S TRANSACTIONS: The Reds today placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to yesterday, RHP Jared Burton (low back spasms); recalled from Louisville RHP Todd Coffey; reinstated from the 15-day DL and optioned to Louisville RHP Elizardo Ramirez (sore right shoulder)...Ramirez is scheduled to start for the Bats tonight.

The old lower back spasms, eh?

Did Burton advise the Reds of his back spasms or did the Reds advise Burton he has lower back spasms!

For the Reds to be competitive, it is no secret they need guys in the pen, and Burton hurts them. He might be great in two years but they need him 'hurt' for awhile.

The sad thing is even when Eddie and Bray are back up, the bullpen still isn't good enough to contend. The potential trade of Dunn for relievers is transparent. With Freel, Hamilton, Griffey and now Hopper the Reds can trade Dunn. Hamilton is a perfect upgrade to Dunn.

I would like to hear John's thoughts on this, but isn't it too early to get serious trade offers? Teams might not be desparate enough to give away someone good for just Dunn. This smacks of a rumor that would last 4-7 weeks, not what a Reds team not still could contend this year (thanks Brewers!) needs.

I think I smell a rat. The guy hasn't pitched in a week. How does one get lower back spasms when one isn't doing anything. Especially at 23 years old. I didn't have back spasms until I was in my late 30's.

I think it is a great move, if the Reds can get away with it.

Do the Reds have to send proof of the injury to the league office?

Oh for cryin out loud. Work a trade for him or let him go. There are plenty of major league ready relievers in this game, so there's no sense in hanging on to this kid.

We should just call him Wily Mo Burton. Not good enough to play, but we...can't...let...him...go!

John, I understand rule 5 drafts must stay on the 40 man roster this year but what about the following year do they still have to stay on the 40 man roster?

Just curious how one can say Hamilton is a perfect upgrade to Dunn? I'd be curious to see the stats to back this up.
