Phillies 8, Reds 4

"Josh didn't have his location," Dusty Baker said. "When Josh doesn't have his location, bad things happen."

Bad things happened, indeed. Fogg gave up six runs on five hits in the his Reds debut. He put them a 3-0 hole they never got out of.

"I made bad pitches," Fogg said. "I didn't get ahead of hitters. I put the team in a big hole. It was a bad day for me."

Javy Valentin left the game with a strained left hamstring. Scott Hatteberg was the emergency catcher. My guess is Valentin goes on the DL. David Ross isn't eligible to come off the DL until April 14. The Reds will probably bring Ryan Hanigan up from Louisville.

Adam Dunn left the game in a double switch. "I didn't want to take him out," Baker said. "But I needed to get two inning out of (Jared) Burton. I don't want to use up the bullpen. This is four-game series."

Burton was very good -- two perfect innings, four strikeouts.

Not much to be optimistic or pleased about, but on the bright side, Griffey usually hits a bunch of doubles before he goes on a homerun trip.

I see fireworks in the near future for Griff.

Optimistic and pleased with Burton, dont you think?

Every game has had something good:

G1 Cordero
G2 Keppinger / Mercker
G3 JC / Lincoln
G4 Burton

Now if these guy are consistant, weve got the makings of a relevant ball club. If Volquez is really good (as they say) we have the makings of a contender.

A word on the Cueto excitement:

For all the "its just one start" guys, it will always be "one start" or "just two starts" or "only one good season". For you guys, its who you are. I get it. Probably not your most endearing character trait.

Getting excited over a young pitcher is FUN, thats why we do it. We like it, it feels good. Noone is betting their life savings on Cueto to win a Cy Young, noone is quiting their job to make a documentary about "Cueto, the hall of famer".

Were just having fun, try it, its free, you might enjoy the game a little more, and may even live longer.

Dont live life waiting for something bad to happen.

Besides, after nearly a decade of nothing good to talk about you think we should take a pass on this opportunity?!

Fogg, Affeldt and Coffey..not too impressive so far.

Hamilton had another couple of hits and drove in 3 runs. I hope Volquez turns out to be a good pitcher but it sure would be nice to still have Hamilton in centerfield

John I dont think you need to moderate this blog anymore..I dont feel there will be any further issues and I think everyone would enjoy an unmoderated blog

The bullpen issue has boggled me for years. Maybe I'm old school, but what's wrong with a guy pitching an inning a day for a 4 game series? What are the real chances a reliever is needed 4 straight days anyway. I don't understand Dusty's comment; "I don't want to use up the bullpen. This a four-game series." There are 7 relief pitchers on this team, right? How can he use up his bullpen in a 4 game series unless his starters get "shelled" early in the game, every game? Years ago, I remember some relievers making 90-95 appearances a year. I'm quite sure I'm overlooking something or the school of thought these days are different from years past. Is it a "righty/lefty" thing? I would appreciate someone explaining this to me.

who else is hoping homer goes out and k's 8 per 7 innings with 2 or less walks his next 2 starts? c'mon homer we're rootin' for ya!

fogg was as bad as you can be, and if that's how bad he is when he's not his all-time major league-average self, he CANNOT help this team. seeing fogg lay that egg was a flashback to last year's saarloos/santos flameouts. after all that harang, arroyo and cueto, i guess i became quickly spoiled on it. even though it's just one start, it was against a playoff caliber lineup and something of an indicator of what won't play against teams the reds need to beat come august. fogg has no stuff at all and looked surprised every time he managed to pull out his compass and find the zone, or see a guy whiff on one of his BP fastballs. this guy couldn't locate a fastball, led alone a breaking pitch. he looked like a fisherman lost at sea tossing a line in the ocean hoping it hit the shore. if fogg goes out next week and is even just subpar, krivsky better be on the phone to louisville to get belisle or bailey up here. they never looked THAT helpless out there. that was dumatrait-ish. NOW i understand why baker gave bailey a chance to make the team off one good outing after multiple bad outings. he'd been chewin' toothpicks watching fogg hop on his rabbit foot and luck and "moxie" (to use wayne's definition) his way through. fogg needs to be "mojoed" to louisville.

Wow, Dunn out in a double switch!
Would not have seen that last year. I have to think he was not feeling well.

Was that an Eric Milton sighting last night? Yikes.

How many subpar starts do you think they'd give Fogg before giving Belisle another shot?

Someone remind me again why we signed Colorado's Dynamic Duo; Fogg/Affeldt.

*cough* Belisle *cough*

Too much Fogg, too little clutch hitting. Fogg will not finish the season in this rotation. He doesn't have enough stuff to survive GABP. Bailey or Belisle by July 1.

BTW, why didn't they skip Fogg and run Volquez last night?

WOW, I hope there was more to removing Dunn in that situation, than just trying to save an inning for the bullpen. That move is on par with Castro batting for Hamilton unless there was something wrong with Dunn.

Fogg's start should have been skipped this week with the off day, of course.

Belisle last season: 178 innings, 212 hits, 5.32 ERA. Those numbers are actually a bit worse than even Fogg's. I don't want him in the starting rotation either.

Burton threw the ball exceptionally well. He was hitting 94 consistently with very good control of his pitches. A very good outing, specially against those hitters.

With Volquez going after Harang, it appears the Reds are going to a rotation of Harang, Volquez, Arroyo, Cueto, and Fogg...

Fogg had a bad start, but the Reds need to be able to score more than 4 runs per game.

Where is the vaunted offense?

at 11:02 AM Blogger Unknown said...

Supposedly Homer only hit 91 on the radar. Makes you wonder. That said, if he can control that hook of his and learn how to setup hitters, 91 can be enough. But still, what happened to his velocity?

Exactly what I have been saying since last July, "What happened to Homer's velocity"?

Please keep the moderation John, it's the only way we've been able to talk baseball on here unfortunately.

Why do people keep bringing up non-Reds in a Reds blog?

It's irrelevant people, they don't play for us... they don't matter.

Fogg looked terrible, and so far Affeldt has looked the same. I hope that it's just early season jitters... but if not, I hope we get them the hell out of here if they keep up the poor performance.

I would take Belisle over Fogg in a second.

Belisle pitches 5 good innings then blows up. Fogg pitches bad from the start. Atleast we have a mentality that we can win this game rather than give up 3-4 runs in the first inning. Belisle has shown moments of command, has Fogg?

Bailey should be in over Fogg too. He pitched better than that last year as a rookie.

I really really hate Fogg being in the rotation. I keep saying it because no seems to notice this... Fogg IS AN INSURANCE PLAYER. He is the last resort... Why is he pitching over Volquez?

I know Volquez and Cueto are similar pitching styles and they want to break that up but we weren't playing the D-Backs last night! AARGH! This really ticked me off.

Ok, so Fogg wasn't so good, but good God, Matt Belisle isn't the answer. Clearly, everyone has a short term memory with Belisle...

By the way, Philadelphia isn't exactly a girl's softball team. They're pretty good, and by 'pretty good,' I mean they probably have the best lineup in the NL (who's better? The Mets maybe... I guess Milwaukee is pretty solid too...)

Fogg is what he is - but so is Matt Belisle, and personally, I'd love to see Bailey have a full season at AAA and give him a shot next year - he's only 21, after all, and he's nowhere near where Cueto is.

Fogg did look a little surprised last night. His breaking pitch, which I assume was a slider/cutter moved horizontally into the middle of the plate repeatedly. They were crushing that pitch. Most of his pithces were mid-80's with an occasional 90mph fastball out of the strike zone.

I am not going to write the guy off after one bad start, but I sure would rather see a hard-throwing Bailey out there than the soft-toss Fogg we saw last night.

The guy I am really surprised about is Affeldt. I know he had a bad spring, but he really has some good stuff. He is a lefty that throws mid-90's, with a big curve and nice change up. He seems like he should make for a decent starter, but he must have a lot of Belisle in him. They both have good stuff, but they are missing that consistency from inning to inning.

at 1:06 PM Blogger JackBlueAsh said...

Loshe also has some very good stuff..go figure

Game 2 for us at the park on Sunday..I understand Volquez will be starting..We are psyched

at 2:37 PM Blogger oldtimer said...

Why not move Burton into the rotation? He's got killer stuff, is gaining cocfidence at the big league level, and is strong and young. No reason he can't start. He clearly has starter stuff, probably better than Bailey, who could replace him in the pen while working on his off speed stuff. Soto relieved a little before he started.

This year's pen is light years better than last year, with the exception of Rowdy Starbucks (Kuppa Coffey and Gone!). Using him in the seventh is irrelevant and dumb if you start a piece of junk like Fogg and the game is over by the fourth.

Makes so much sense Krivsky won't do it.

One thing that Fogg and Affeldt have done for the Reds is they have kept Johnny Cueto in Red.

That is worth it for me. Looks like Bako and Patterson are contributing.

It is a LONG Season and I am sure that Affeldt will
