Lineup v. Phillies

Corey Patterson CF
Jeff Keppinger SS
Ken Griffey Jr. RF
Brandon Phillips 2B
Adam Dunn LF
Edwin Encarnacion 3B
Joey Votto 1B
Javy Valentin C
Josh Fogg P

One more Johnny Cueto note: According to Elias, he was the first pitcher in modern history to debut with 10 strikeouts and no walks. He was only the third pitcher in history to record at least 10 strikeouts and allow only one hit in his debut. Steve Woodard (1997) and Juan Marichal (1960) are the others.

I saw the mention of the latter record on ESPN early this morning.

Very interesting! Hopefully Cueto maintains control and puts up more similar outings!

John,

Where are all the folks who demanding the Reds trade Cueto and others for Bedard? Blanton? etc. I think Krivsky deserves a pat on the back for keeping with his young guns instead of making a move just to make a move.

John,
Before we make this guy a Reds Hall of Famer shouldn't we give him at least a few more starts. I would hesitate to print such praises and search wikipedia all night wondering how Cueto's one start falls in history. Bailey is suffering from the same crap. Sports writers made him to be a sure thing and now many people are yelling trade him and Bailey is struggling to regain his confidence in AAA.
Not to take away from Cueto, but,
Diamondbacks have alot of young hitters. It was a wet day game following a heroic night game that ended with one play. Cueto was facing Doug Davis not Johan Santana.
I am excited about his abilities. But there is no way I make him instant when in todays MLB instant doesn't happen.

Cincikid ... Lighten up on the kid. It's not like Santana affects the bats. Sure the D-Backs lineup was thin of starters, but they are sill major-leaguers. Don't diminish the kid's legendary start. You want to root against him, go be a Yankee fan.

Wow. I know I'll take hits from some people, but I have to agree with Mr. Redlegs. Shouldn't we wait until Cueto has made more than ONE regular season start before we start making the kinds of comparisons I'm seeing on here? As someone mentioned on the previous string, the D-backs are FAR from a hitting machine as a team. I don't want to take away from Cueto's excellent debut, but I think a little perspective might be in order.

We are playing two third basemen? Cool strategy from Dusty! They must have a lot of right-handed pull hitters.

yo cincikid, I understand you, but look the D-backs won their division last year, might have been a fluke statistically but, they still won it. And I don't know if you saw the game or even caught the highlights, but trust me, the guy was throwing 96 & 97mph gas at the knees. He threw 92 pitches in 7 innings, faced 22 batters and struck out 10. That's only 4.18 pitches per batter and still had 10 K's. Dude, his debut was almost unchartable.

And as for Bailey, he pitched great last night in a 2-0 loss. His time will come, but he still doesn't have the same kind of stuff Cueto does.

We've got a lot of good baseball to look forward to if nobody gets injured. After the first series of the year, we're tied for 1st. I'm excited about him to, but it's okay to be a little optimistic when reflecting on what he did yesterday. Have great one, dude. GO REDS!

Fact is Cueto had a great start, one that goes down in history as one of the best debuts ever. Regardless if he is going to be the next Pedro or not you can't deny the fact that many BASEBALL PLAYERS and scouts have made this comparison prior to this start, it is not just John making up some crazy predictions. He threw a heck of a game against the D-Backs, who regardless of what some random person reading a blog thinks, is a very good team and picked by many to win their division or at very least get a WC spot. Just sit back and enjoy the young kid pitch, if he starts to struggle go ahead and be your Reds fan self and complain why he wasn't traded along with Bailey and Votto for Joe Blanton. Until then actually enjoy the possibility of the Reds having another stud pitcher.....

Wow! The negativity on this blog amazes me. Heaven forbid we get excited about a Reds player that shows a bright future. The lives of some of the posters on here must be pretty bleak to not be able to look through rose-colored glasses for at least one day after that performance yesterday!

Al:

How's this for a little perspective:

EVERY pitcher in the history of the game, from Rick Ankiel to Cy Young, has had a big league debut.

NOT ONE of them did what Cueto did last night.

If you can't get excited about that, fine. If you want to be a so-called realist, go ahead. But the kid has his whole team excited and fired up. I don't see what's wrong with the fans feeling the same way.

I wonder why it is that some people feel the need to be our self appointed devils advocates?

Are Cincy fans so bitter that they refuse to even revel in the fact that a CINCINNATI REDS PITCHER, had a historic major league debut?

Would you rather he have gotten rocked, and sucked, so that you could bash him, bash Dusty, bash Krivsky, bash the Reds, etc.?

Would you rather he did the exact same thing, but for another team, because we traded him away for an older pitcher?

Guys, gain a little perspective, it would not have matter what team in the majors he debuted for, if he had pitched the EXACT SAME WAY, he would have recieved the EXACT SAME COVERAGE(probably even MORE if he debuted for say the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Dodger, etc, you know large market teams), because it actually, really, honestly, was a historic first start. Does that mean he is going to be a Hall of Famer, of course not, but why throw water on it?

If his line had been something like 5 innings, 95 pitches, 3 earned runs, 5 Ks, 3 walks, then
he would not be getting the accolades he is getting, but the fact of the matter is his line was what it was, and it put him in the same company FOR HIS MAJOR LEAGUE DEBUT, as some pretty darn good pitchers. If you pay close attention, as if obvious, there are some of those names you also never heard of, so I think everyone already realizes this is just one start...but sheez, let Reds fans be happy for a change, instead of wallowing in misery as so many Cincy fans are apt to do.

Another Patterson start. Mr. Automatic-Out. How about giving Hopper some at-bats Baker before you screw up this season altogether?

The only reason Keppinger's in the lineup is because of an injury or he'd have him sitting on the bench, too.

Let me once again try to throw some at least "cool" water on what seems to be an overheated reaction:

As a rookie, in his FIFTH start, Kerry Wood threw a one-hit, no walk, 20-strikeout game.

How many Cy Young awards has he won? How many World Series have the Cubs won since he came up?

And let me help you guys remember something: Just because some of us aren't going over-the-edge ga-ga "give him the ROY" and "woo-hoo, the Reds are going all they way now!" after ONE excellent start by ONE great young starter DOES NOT mean that we're being negative, or downers, or anything else. If I'm not mistaken, Cueto's next start should be against the Brewers. If he duplicates this start against THAT lineup, or even comes close, then my eyebrows will be raised. Not before.

smtides, I couldn't agree with you more. But the question is, is Cueto going to end up more like Rick Ankiel, or Cy Young? The fact is, there's absolutely no way to know the answer after one start.

at 12:33 PM Blogger cincikid said...

Don't get me wrong. I'm excited. I even called my dad to make sure he seen the highlights. I love his ability. It's something that I've never seen from any rookie in Cinci. I'm only saying, I have am reserved by everyone saying that Cueto is a "God Almighty". Better than Harang? Jeez, it was only one game with less than significant atmosphere. I only saying wait and see here. I'm not saying he is going to fall on his face. But why build him up so high that everyone is just going to jump off the Cueto Wagon as soon as he gets pulled after 2/3 of a inning 6 run baseball.
