Reds 3, D-Backs 2

Johnny Cueto's debut could not have been much better. He retired the first 15 batters he faced, gave up a home run to Justin Upton, then retired the next six.

The Reds beat the Diamondbbacks 3-2 today, despite a scary eighth. Francisco Cordero pitched a perfect ninth for his first save as a Red.

Cueto went seven innings, allowing the one hit. He struck out 10 and walked none. According to Elias Sports Bureau, he is the first Reds pitcher since 1900 to have 10 strikeouts in the his major league debut. That's as far back as official stats go.

He hit 95, 96 mph on his fastball. His slider was 87, 88, 90. 92. He mixed in an occasional 84, 85 mph changeup. He did not go to a three-ball count. He threw 92 pitches, 68 for strikes.

According to Elias, Cueto is the first pitcher to throw at least five perfect innings in his major league debut since Seattle’s Ken Cloude threw 5 1/3 perfect innings on May 9, 1997, against the White Sox.

It got ugly after Cueto left. David Weathers came on. He got an out, then walked the bases loaded. The Reds brought in Mike Lincoln, who has not pitched in a big league game since May 3, 2004. Lincoln gave up a sac fly to pinch-hitter Alex Romero and struck out Chris Young.

Upton broke up the no-no by leading off the sixth with a line drive home run to left. Cueto got the next three hitters, two by strikeout. He worked a 1-2-3 seventh, as well. He did not strikeout a batter in the inning.

Adam Dunn made nice catches on the only two hard-hit balls before Upton's homer.

The game started in a light drizzle and it picked up.

Cueto had a 1-2-3 first. He struck out Chris Young on a 96 mph fastball, got Chris Burke to pop out to center, then got Orlando Hudson on a grounder.

Ken Griffey Jr. and Brandon Phillips hit back-to-back doubles in the Reds' first. Dunn and Edwin Encarnacion followed with a walks to load the bases. Scott Hatteberg hit a routine grounder right at second baseman Hudson. He booted it, allowing Dunn to score.

Cueto's second: 1-2-3, two more strikeouts.

Jeff Keppinger made it 3-0 with a two-out home run in the second.

Cueto's third: 1-2-3, two more strikeouts.

Cueto got Young to take a 94 mph fastball for strike three to start the fourth. Burke swung through a 89 mph slider. Hudson flied out to left on a nice catch by Dunn.

Everybody will like Cueto, evan if this game goes bad but i hope not, as last year I watched in louisville I was more impressed with him than Homer Bailey, Cueto dont put runners on like Bailey does

I wonder, how is Phillips doing hitting in the #4 hole?

You can lead off Bako for all I care..... BP thrives at #4

Cueto's looking great! Impressive command! Great location and changes of speed!

Double E won't be going to Triple A anytime soon. His defense will get better.

Take a deep breath Reds fans! We have a long and entertaining way to go! I see many great things coming our way this year and for many years to come!

How about Cueto? Nine up - Nine Down with five K's. WOW !!!!!

Not to get negative, but we need to speed this thing up and get it past the 5th inning.

I'm sure everyone I saying Alex who?. Also nice to see EE back in the lineupe.

I agree, BATSFAN. Davis is slow-playing us a bit.

John, are you surprised that Dusty went with Bako today? I thought he would have started Valentin solely for the communication factor would be better between Cueto and Valentin. I could be totally wrong though.

I got the D-Back feed today,Cueto looks REAL nasty.MLB extra innings is such a gift from the heavens.

Reds look sharp.Hitting looks good & plate discipline looks sharp.

I agree with Bats and Emilio. I'd bet John's pay check he is doing it on purpose. Not that I root for the Reds line-up to go three up and three down, but it wouldn't break my heart if they did it in the bottom of the 4th.

redsfanwoody, you must be referring to Alex Gonzales who has a world series ring as the starting Shortstop.

The guy who turned 102 double plays for the 2005 fish. Larkin never turned 100, Conception did in 1975 but not 1976, and we all think both those guys are special.

Phillips turned 113 DP's last year, we know he is special. O Hudson had 98.

Don't you get it, AGon and Phillips are elite, and paired together unique.

Keppinger is a great hitter and 5-6 position utility player

At SS, I'll take average fielding and above average hitting versus above-average fielding and below average hitting...at the very least, when Alex is healthy, move Kep to 3rd.

at 2:00 PM Blogger DC_Valdez said...

Cueto is hot. Four innings and 7K.

We kind of expect it from a good, young pitcher the league really hasn't seen yet.

The true measure will be when he sees these guys again. Also, let's see how he gets out of jams...

at 3:26 PM Blogger travidee said...

After watching Keppinger play short the first two games this year, my memory of him playing short last year was not wrong. Keppinger has no range and his arm is way below average, to the point where he has to double pump to get anything on his throw to first. Keppinger is an excellent major league hitter... but is nothing more than a fill in at short until AGON is off the DL. Baker is going to have to find a way to get his bat in the lineup, but the Reds cannot win games with Keppinger at short for the long term, and if AGON cannot come back healthy, the Reds will make a move, probably calling up Gill or maybe a trade, to get a shortstop who can at least give you average defense. Good teams win with pitching and great defense up the middle, which Keppinger does not offer. Keppinger gives the Reds what they need badly, a right hand hitter who can get on base but an everday shortstop he is not.

at 3:27 PM Blogger Brandon said...

Gotta love kep or as Marty calls him the hit man and as he said you have to imagine they have no choice but to find a place for his bat in this lineup.

Also Hatte got cold and fast when the season started.

Lets see Voltron match Cuetos outing and have a great outlook for the season as Reds fans.

All I can say is WOW! Great outing Johny Cueto! Welcome to the bigs!

at 3:40 PM Blogger trina said...

Great Win! It's games like this that Mike Stanton is missed (by the D-Backs!). Lincoln and Cordero did great work from the pen. Our hitting today--not so much. Should've probably blown it open much earlier. Looking forward to Volquez over the weekend. The D-Backs' announcers were really impressed with Cueto. Anybody that has a 86-87 Mph CHANGEUP is the Real Deal! Can't wait until his next start. This is what Reds fans have been waiting for since...since...since...Don Gullett?

at 3:40 PM Blogger Ankur Varma said...

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaah Boiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

Hopefully Stormy will bounce back, like he did last season. He's a contact pitcher, and I think he was trying too hard. He's a vet, he'll be fine. But damn, JOHNNY CUETO!!! Remember this day boys and girls.

at 3:46 PM Blogger NVreds said...

He may be the 1st (to get 10 SO in a debut) since 1900 for the reds, but the FSN team put up the history of most SO in a debut, and harang was on the list (for the A's). there were a bunch of other great pitchers on that list, obviously, get ready negative peoples, this is why we bash on you, because it seems you all forgot about this kid. We haven't even seen our other dominican righty, and I hear hes pretty good too. expect a lot of SO.

Cueto looked d__m good today, even after seeing him once, the dbacks couldnt put good swings on him late. he can pitch half as good as today and the reds will still be in the game. especially when the bats get comfortable.

If you haven't been positive about this team, nows a good time to start.

If anyone watching the game wanted to see cueto in the stretch, well sorry he never had to use it.

at 3:46 PM Blogger Cheviot Sports Authority said...

Yep, that Keppinger is a real liability at SS.

He has more hits than Griffey, Dunn, Freel, Patterson, Hatteberg, and Bako combined.

As I said at the end of last season and before Ozzie Smith (I mean Gonzalez)got hurt this year, Keppinger needs to be the SS.

at 3:51 PM Blogger Mike said...

I can't understand why everyone is so down on Gonzo. He hit .272 with 16 HRs last year in 2/3 of a season. His OPS was .793, right at the league average. For a good defensive SS, that's outstanding.

Gonzo ought to start at SS most games, but there's no reason Keppinger can't be our "ninth starter." Against left-handers, Kepp ought to start at 1B. That's at least 1/3 of the games, so there's 55 starts or so. Against right-handers, you have to figure that: (A) Gonzo will rest at least 25 games (one a week; Kepp plays SS); (B) Phillips will sit out 5-6 (one a month; Kepp plays 2B); (C) EE will rest 25 games (Kepp plays 3rd); (D) 6 of the 9 away games vs. AL teams will be against RHs (so Kepp plays 3rd and EE DHs) and (E) Griffey will miss games against RHs due to injury at some point in the season (Kepp plays RF; he's not great out there, but neither is KG any more). That's 115 starts for Kepp plus however many games Griff is injured.

The guys we don't need any more are Freel and Castro. Freel is a nice player, but with Patterson and Hopper here now and Bruce on the way, paying $3+ million for Freel is nuts. We ought to trade him for a prospect if we can. And Castro is just a waste of roster space. I would imagine he gets cut loose when Gonzo comes off the DL.

at 3:52 PM Blogger Joe said...

Cueto - wow! What is not to like about this guy's performance. Aside from Weathers, which will be a blip, the pen looked very good too! How about Keppinger! Marty took his ire out on some unsung ametuer umpire who had the audacity to send him a note with an opinon Marty did not agree with. Right or wrong, and Marty was right, he could have tolerated a fan's opinion, or dissagreed in a more amiable manner, rather than laying him out for a several hundred thousand or more listeners to hear. Could be a few less listeners when things like that happen.

at 3:58 PM Blogger Joe said...

I was glad to see EE in the line-up today! Build the kid up rather then tearing him down. I'll bet he practiced his bunting today in the tunnel! I'll also bet Dunn and maybe Griffey are too.

at 4:00 PM Blogger NVreds said...

I'll admit I'm starting to come around on keppinger. This guy needs to play every day. I'm still looking forward to gonzo coming back, but in my opinion keppinger and him need to start a platoon type thing (60% gonzo 40% kep), the days you have gonzo a SS you better have keppinger somewhere else (uhhm maybe 3B?).

In the first game however, gonzo's range could have saved a run (no guarantee it wouldnt have scored later though), but no errors so far for keppinger, awesome. plus we need him in there so other hitters can learn how to hit right in this park. That HR today? he wasnt trying to hit it, it happened. Thats what griffey, dunn, votto, patterson, & EE need to learn, because if you go up there looking for a single up the middle, you'll help this team way more often than going to bat looking for a homer.

at 4:00 PM Blogger redbeard said...

Absolutely sensational for Cueto. Let's start the ROY campaign right now. That is the best home grown pitcher the Reds have developed since Mario Soto.

Let's hope Bailey can learn to be half as efficient with his pitches as Cueto is.

A rotation with Harang, Cueto, Arroyo, Bailey, and Volequez would have as much talent as any rotation ever to take the field in a Reds uniform.

goodness that was fun to watch. cueto everything adverstised on this day.
i know that pople will say... wait until he goes around the league...but honestly... when did we have someone do that the first time.
i don't know where you play keppinger. i think agon, when healthy, is the guy at short.
between first and third and right field i think you get him 90 to 110starts.
got to find a spot for his bat.
can't wait to see volquez.

at 4:19 PM Blogger Grizzlyfox said...

Kepp will play somewhere as long as he hits. Mike basically summed it up. I've never understood everyone's fascination with playing him at short, when there's a spot for a RH 1B open, a backup 3B, a backup 2B, and time out in left and right. He'll get plenty of ABs off the bench in games too. He's basically becoming what Ryan Freel was, minus the injury liability.

Congratulations Johnny Cueto!!! What a debut!!! Congratulations Mike Lincoln!!! It's been four years since you last pitched in MLB. Outstanding!! You sure made quite a return! Love how you bailed out Stormy and our beloved Reds!! Congratulations Francisco Cordero on your first save with our beloved Reds!! Keppinger? The guy can flat-out hit!! He has to stay in the line-up. He proved it last year and nothing has changed with him. Can he play catcher? LOL!!!

by the way. bailey went 7 innings for louisville. 1 run.... not many hits. 2 strikeouts and only 1 walk. only threw 82 pitches...53 strikes.

Anyone notice that in the middle of the game with runners in scoring position and first base open, the D-Backs elected to have their right-hand pitcher pitch to Griffey (instead of walking him to pitch to Phillips). KG is not the same player he used to be. He probably isn't even the player that Phillips is today. At least the D-Backs thought so.

El HUMO!!!!!!!

Put me down for that nick name for the rest of the year! Wow, what a game by Cueto. Gotta be excited about the rest of the season and for the future for the Reds with this kid & Volquez.

PS ... for those that dont know, El humo stands for "The Smoke" in Spanish ... and that is what Johnny was thowing today ... pure smoke!

You've got that Trina. They intentionally walked Griffey to get to Phillips, who took a called third strike.

Finally got to see Cueto, and I am highly impressed. WHAT A DEBUT!

Keppinger needs to be on the right side of the infield or in the outfield. He doesn't have the arm to consistently play SS or 3B, sorry to say. But, he is the BEST hitter on this team. He needs to be in the lineup every day, no matter where you put him!

I would honestly trade Gonzo, put Phillips at SS and put Keppinger at 2B. That's the BEST BET for this team. Get another quality reliever out of Gonzo.

John, I've asked this question before but I think it was in an older thread. Since I can't imagine, at this point in their careers, anyone would argue that Junior is a better offensive threat than Dunn, can you explain why they bat Junior 3rd and Dunn 5th? That costs Dunn about 30 plate appearances.

Junior is fine, and I'm certainly not suggesting anything rash, but flipping Dunn and Junior in the order seems (to me anyway) to make a ton of sense.

Please tell me it isn't because Junior "wants" to hit 3rd. I beg of you, please tell me that isn't the reason.

at 5:01 PM Blogger Laura said...

The only way that debut could have been better would have been if I could have watched it instead of listen, lol.

Thoughts and prayers go out to Doug Davis. Takes on heck of a guy to take that ball out there and pitch with the weight that I'm sure is hanging on his shoulders.

at 5:10 PM Blogger reaganspad said...

Most people think that Javy didn't start because he didn't run out the ground ball. Actually, it is because Bako is a better catcher. We need Javy, but our best pitcher never got comfortable on Monday.
Bako did a great job catching with Bronson and the kid today.

not everything in baseball is about the batting average. Keppinger was saved an unforced error last night in the 9th on a great scoop by Joey.

I understand the love for Kepp. He is a GREAT hitting utility guy, and our team is better with he and Gonzo (and Griffey) healthy. Keppinger can play Right Field. We have seen Freel this hot before, just before we signed him to the big contract everyone is complaining about now...

at 5:56 PM Blogger Rob Dicken said...

That statement I disagree with you on. Freel got praise for his hustle and defense, not hitting. If Freel did get praised for hitting (which you may be right, he may have been hot at one time), it was short lived.

Jeff Keppinger just KNOWS HOW TO HIT, plain and simple. He gets praise for that, not because he is on a hot streak.

at 6:50 PM Blogger REddlegg in Colorado said...

Kepp is a pure hitter

Gonzo is a pure fielder.

Maybe a clone with both players DNA & you get a latin-american player that can do all.

Gonzppinger. Now that would be nice,Uh?If Paul D can dream, then I can too.

The reds have a lot of depth, which can open the doors for a big trade & push players to be better. This is a great problem. Now,If they can swing a deal for a stud catcher that can do all,we be looking REALLY GOOD.

I'm impressed with the bullpen, that game last season would have been blown.Stormy was trying to pull off his best Mike"Roided"Stanton impression, but Dusty wasn't having it.Thank you Dusty for having the ____ to pull.Narron would of been lost in the headlights.

reagansapd...I simply stated that people are going to ask Gozalez who? It was not a rip on Gonzalez. Trust me I get it. Not everyone is as naive as you think they are.

I am simply making the observation that if Keppinger keeps it up,a lot of people are going to want him to stay the SS. That's all. No need to rip on my comment.

I know what your feeling are on it,and I think everybody else does too. Relax a little bit.

got you redsfanwoody.

You asked a question and I answered. I agree that Kepp needs to get AB's.

I think it is a great situation when both AGon and Kepp are available to Dusty. More depth, leads to more rest for Dunn, Phillips and Griffey and allows us to go 162 games with our A Team.

It is a LONG season
