Pre-game Dusty

Manager Dusty Baker chatted with scribes in the dugout a couple hours before today's game. Some things he said:

-On Edinson Volquez, who is making his much-anticipated Reds debut today:
"He’s been in the big leagues before. This is just a different situation,” Baker said, when asked if Volquez was nervous before his start. “I just passed him. He was eating breakfast. I mean, he’ll be fine. I ain’t worried about Volquez too much.”

-Francisco Cordero's win Saturday was his first victory since 2006. Baker said it was fortuitous that Aaron Harang had such a strong start, capped by Cordero's effort.
“That was so big for us to win when we did,” Baker said. “Harang didn’t get the victory, but he got my bullpen back straight, which is huge.”

-The Reds haven't been prolific at the plate - yet. Baker said he wasn't worried.
"I'd be more concerned if we weren't pitching well," Baker said.
"A good team usually doesn't bust loose (in terms of hitting) in April. They bust loose when the weather's hot."

Amen on the bullpen comment.

Although pitching will be better with Cueto and Volquez well need a ready bullpen with Cubs and Brewers coming up.

I can't even tell ya how nice it finally is to have a manager who knows the heck he's talking about!
