The B.P.
Just finished my 2007 debut with Marty Brennaman. It's always a lot of fun. I'm never sure what Marty's going to drop on me. He asked about the three-catcher thing today, which I think is a temporary deal. Norris Hopper or Jeff Keppinger will be here when they're ready is my guess.
This gives me a chance to put the explanation of the Bank President nickname in writing. It goes back to four years ago. The Enquirer was doing the second inning as a sponsored thing. I take off Saturday and Sundays at home. Marty equated that to working banker’s hours, thus the name. It’s pretty bad when a guy who plays more golf than Arnold Palmer gets on you about your work schedule.
But the name stuck. A couple buddies use it. One time someone overheard Harley call me the Bank President. The guy asked me about refinancing his house. No lie.

Heard you on the air, John--nice job!
I'm a new WLW listener and becoming a Reds fan- transplanted from New York. I'm surprised by Marty's comments where he essentially said that the club wasn't serious about winning with 3 catchers on the roster. As I'm beginning to listen to the Reds coverage, I'm finding Marty pretty negative on his own team- don't understand it. I would think he would support the team's decisions and not toss around negative vibes like this over the air waves for the general public.
That's very much what Marty does. He's critical. But he's fair and entertaining.
I'm not always so sure about the "fair" part. Once Marty makes up his mind about a guy, it pretty much stays made up, and he sometimes takes cheap shots at guys he doesn't like. He's certainly been more negative over the past few years, but in fairness, there hasn't been much to be positive about since 1999.
When he's engaged in the game (as opposed to golf, inside jokes, or side conversations), Marty is still as good as they come (this side of Mr. Scully). Hopefully, Thom's presence and a better team will push him to his capable heights.
Thom and Brantley were very interesting to listen to yesterday. They were both very opinionated (mostly negative - but again, the Reds played badly). I wonder if that was encouraged, or if both are just "inspired by" Marty's example.
Unfortunately i don't get to hear games that often...but Marty's candor, even if sometimes excessive for some, is such a major contrast to every other sportscaster out there. He doesn't play games with the "he got good wood on the ball" cliches that so many ESPN types do....straight talk and substance are a welcome change to everything else.
