Sad news for Majewski

There been some clamoring to get Gary Majewski and Bill Bray up to the Reds to help the bullpen. That's not going to happen anytime very soon -- for very different reasons.

Majewski is healthy and he was pitching well. But he's gone home to Mississippi to deal with a family tragedy. His sister was killed a few days ago in the ATV accident. Wayne Krivsky said he talked to Majewski briefly while Majewski was in the Philadelphia airport on his way back from Ottawa. Krivsky didn't have a lot of details. Obviously, the club will give Majewski all the time he needs. Even more obviously, dealing with the situation is more important than baseball.

Bray has thrown two bullpen sessions. The next step is to throw to hitters, then pitch in a game at extended spring training. He's pain-free, but it sounds like he's a week or two from even going on a rehab assignment.

Also:
--Infielder/outfileder Jerry Gil will have “Tommy John” surgery on Tuesday. Gil appeared in 17 spring training games. He shut it down March 18 with elbow pain. He has been on the disabled
list all season.

--Scott Hatteberg is hitting leadoff tonight against the Rockies. He's led off nine times in his career, all in 2003 for Oakland.

Not sure what JR. was trying on Dunn's hit to the gap; but, please let's not start bashing him again....he is playing well and had a stolen base last night...give him a break

I think Majewski is going to help the team a lot for a long time, if he stays healthy. To deal with all of the criticism he got last year and keep coming back for more takes some courage. I liked how he seemed to mentor Bray through the rest of the season last year. His courage is getting tested again with this sad sad loss. I bet he rebounds though, and gives the team a boost like a great free agent signing or trade before the playoffs.

Coffey needs to go to AAA until he learns how to really bear down and dominate. He needs to stay there long enough until he is so hacked off about playing minor league baseball that when he comes back to the Show, he takes it out on every hitter, and treats every hitter like somebody who is trying to steal his last dollar. Again, check out the demeanor J Papelbon has on the mound. He is kicking butt and taking names. Coffey is walking two batters in 2/3 of an inning.

Coffey walked two batters in an inning because they had him intentionally walk Helton and ended up walking the next batter after that.
