Sparky on Davey
Bill Koch called Spaky Anderson the day the Reds announced Dave Concepcion's number was being. Sparky was out of town but he got back to Bill today. Here's what he had to say:
-- "I don’t think that anybody ever realized what a great player this guy was. He was not a good player. He was a great player. This guy, he is as good as I ever seen at his position and I don’t understand why, myself personally, he isn’t in the Hall of Fame. But that’s not for me to say."
--"He’s so easy for me to talk about because he’s what you call a major league player all the way."

Davey personifies what is wrong with the Hall of Fame. Davey was the best player at his position in his era. That should be more than enough to get into the HOF. There are many HOF players who cannot say that. They are in because the reached some magic number for hits, wins, etc. There is more to baseball than offense. In fact, offense, is at most, only half the game.
