Minor matters, plus a prediction

You read it here first: Todd Frazier will be in the mix for one of the corner outfield positions next season if the Reds don't sign Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn. Frazier, last year's supplenmental first-round pick, played shortstop at Rutgers. The Reds played him there until his promotion to Sarasota. He's been played four games in the outfield with Sarasota. He's got power. He gets on base. And he hits right-handed. Of course, I could be completely wrong.

Now back the minor league report from Jamie Ramsey:

FRAZIER NAMED FSL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sarasota’s Todd Frazier on Monday was named Florida State League Player of the Week for 5/12-5/18...In 7 games, he batted .321 (9-for-28) with 3 homers, 6 RBI, 7 runs scored, 2 doubles and a .714 slugging pct...Frazier, 22, overall this season is batting .304 with 11 HR and 30 RBI in 42 games split between Sarasota and Dayton (.376obp, .595slg)...he was promoted to Sarasota on 5/7

Includes Louisville’s shutout victory this afternoon.
Louisville blanks Indianapolis this afternoon…Alvin Colina takes care of all the game’s scoring with a 2-run homer…Jay Bruce with 2 hits…Justin Mallett outstanding in his 5.0 shutout innings (3h, 2bb, 5k)…the Bats lose last night…Bruce with a pair of hits…The Lookouts were off yesterday (Weights and Measures Day)…they’ll get back at it tonight in the first game of a 5-game set at West Tenn…Sarasota falls to Brevard County…the SaraReds have dropped 4 straight…Dayton loses in 11 innings to Lansing…Luis Montano solid in his 6.0 innings (4h, 1r, 1bb, 6k)…Terrell Young perfect in relief (2.2ip, 5k).

OVERALL MINOR LEAGUE LEADERS*
Jay Bruce: 5 sacrifice flies (T2nd), 109 total bases (T4th), 60 hits (9th), .336 avg (11th), 665 slg pct. (11th)
Chris Valaika: 61 hits (T5th)
Chris Heisey: 18 doubles (T2nd)
Tonys Gutierrez: .362 avg (15th)
Enerio Del Rosario: 1.41 ERA (11th)
Derrik Lutz: 21 games (T4th)
Jose Castro: 24.80 TPA/K ratio (1st)

So we have the corners taken care of. The question is can: we find a defensive CF that will get on base more than Corey Dustyson? Maybe I'm asking for too much...

there is no chance griffey is a red next year.16 mil for a 39yr old
player who's clearly lost a step or two would just be a terrible buisness decision.

maybe we can get a cf in a trade for dunn if we decide to trade him ... maybe stubbs comes on strong to end the year and gets a look in spring training though i think it would be a very long shot for him to make the team ....

hey john how about a prediction when you think we can see bruce in a reds uniform ... my guess is the first game of the boston series whats your guess ?

ne lineups yet ?

No lineups.

Some asked me my prediction on Bruce yesterday and forgot to respond.

I'm saying Tuesday when the Reds get home. That's not based on anything other than a guy feeling. I'd say the chanced are greater if the Reds don't win three of the last five games on this trip.

so if you are right john and it is when we get home would that mess up the whole super 2 thing ?

how bout we send weathers to philly for victorino since werth is playing well.rumor has it atkins might be available in colorado so we send bailey to them for atkins and maybe the relief pitcher fuentes.griffey to seattle for catcher johjima.a prospect to washington for ss guzman and send encarnacion and hatteberg to frisco for another reliever.so then it would be
vitorino
guzman
phillips
bruce
atkins
dunn
votto
johjima

not like i've been thinking about it much.curious to hear others ideas to fix this team. walt needs help!!

Jocketty is on the record as saying the Super 2 thing is not a factor. I believe him.

Here's why:

Say Bruce is what they Reds think he's going to be, do you think he'd ever get ot arbitration? No. They'd sign him long-term. Like the Brewers did with Braun. Like the Reds did with Phillips. Like the Rays did with Longoria.

Thank you John for explaining the Super 2 thing. Very tired of all those worrying about Super 2. Is not an issue, never has been an issue. REDICULOUS!.

Now on with the important stuff: The Crawl to 600!.

John, I read somewhere that Homer Bailey is learning a slider in AAA right now. Is this true, and could this account for some of the roughness in recent starts?

good points john i had heard jocketty had said that but still didnt know whether to believe that or not but since you say you believe him i take your word for it lets hope you are right if it were up to me he woulda been up on this road trip but o well just as long as he gets here im happy

It doesnt matter how many sac flies Bruce, or anyone else has. That is an irrelevant statistic. It drove me bonkers when people harped on Dunn for his "sac fly drought".

John: is Scott Hatteberg still on the team? I haven't seen him in a month of Sunday's. *sarcasm*

Hi Dusty, my name is Scott and I hit .310 last year. What a waste.

2009 - Start Janish at SS, move Kepp to 1B, Votto to LF. Then all we need is one more outfielder that can hit in the range of 30 HR, decent .285+ BA, and has good defensive range. In the fire sale I would also pick up a young catcher - most likely from Texas or Colorado (they are both stacked).

1B Kepp
2B Phillips
SS Janish
3B Encarnacion
LF Votto
CF ? Power/Avg/Speed
RF Bruce
C young catcher with .270+BA, average power, and good behind the plate
