Dusty on SS

Dusty Baker said what Wayne Krivsky wouldn't: Alex Gonzalez is not going to be ready for Opening Day. Gonzalez isn't allowed to do any baseball activity for three weeks because of the compression stress fracture in his left knee.

"I don't think so," Baker said. "I wouldn't think so, unless a miracle happens. He's still got to get at-bats and get baseball-ready. He's not going to be running or throwing. That's a pretty good setback. But we've got to go on."

Baker isn't ready to declare anyone his starting shortstop.

"I've got to see them play," he said, "not only offensively but shortstop is very big part of the defense. That's a big part of your game. I was counting on 9Gonzalez) defensively -- he and Brandon (Phillips), that's a great double play combination -- and offensively. He's capable of 20-plus homers and driving in big runs."

Baker will not consider moving Phillips to shortstop.

"You're weakening yourself at two positions," he said. "You leave Brandon alone because if you do that it's more work on him defensively. That could affect his offense. He's potential Gold Glove second baseman."

The field to replace Gonzalez includes Jeff Keppinger, Juan Castro, Paul Janish and Adam Rosales -- probably in that order.

The guy to keep an eye on is Rosales. He's made a great early impression at camp.
Rosales, 24, was the Reds' 12th-round pick in the 2005 draft. He hit .286 with 41 doubles, 11 triples, 18 home runs, 79 RBI and 13 steals last year.

"He doesn't look athletic," Baker said. "He just is athletic. He gets the job done big time. The more your around him, the more you like him, the more he grows on you. He's in the right place in right time. He's played well for us."

When do they start cutting/releasing players?

I hate to see Gonzalez injured & hope he comes back healthy soon.

In a ten year career, Gonzo hit over 20HR one season, in 2004, and batted .232, with a .270 OBP, with 23 HR that season in 561 at bats. That season was 2004. Next season in 2005, in 435 AB, Gonzo had 5HR for the entire year.

Gonzalez, in 1117 games, over 10 seasons, has 109 home runs -- he averages around 11 HR per year...I don't know if the Reds can "count" on Gonzo to produce over 20 HR for them...

Gonzo had his highest batting average and highest OBP ever last year at 272 Av & .325 OBP with the Reds...His career is .249 Av and .295 OBP.

Hey John,

What's the knock on Janish. I thought you've been reporting he's been making slick plays at SS all spring?

There's no set date they have to cut. Usually, they do it around March 7.

Janish is outstanding defensively. But he hit .244 at AA and .221 at AAA last year with a total of 4 homers.

Guys, come on--there's no competition for SS. How can there be after the last couple months of last season and the job Keppinger turned in? You're going to open up the competition and judge it based on Spring Training instead of actual big league games?

I get that they like Keppinger available to play all over the field, but they gotta give the job to him with Gonzo out--that's the whole point of having a good "back up" infielder.

Janish--gotta hit in AAA.
Rosales--they moved him to 1B!
Castro--oy.

The Reds medical staff screws up another one. We're supposed to believe that Gonzalez's injury this year has nothing to do with the one last year on the same knee? Not with Kremcheck's history and this team.

This Rosales kid had pretty good numbers. Those 41 doubles should translate to more homers in as he matures. I wonder if those numbers were from AAA last year? I don't really remember him.

Rosales played at Sarasota and Chattanooga. He's a long shot. But he's got Dusty's attention.

I say start Keppinger, sub with Rosales, and cut Gonzo.

Enough slow fat SS nonsense already!

Happy Dance x 10,000 (that Adam has speed and other skills...unlike the overrated Gonzo).

Alex Gonzalez is the Justin Smith of MLB

John, no offense, but do you not have to proof read any of your blog posts? For someone that gets paid to report in a blog, I would think quoting people without gramatical errors would be important.

Why isn't jerry gil on the list of possible replacements? From what I've heard thus far he's having a pretty good spring.

IMHO, we need to go out & pick somebody up to add to the mix.

can someone [krivsky] explain to me how Gonzalez comes to camp with a broken knee when he missed time at the end of last year with this same knee bothering him.it's just inexcusable that this happened.

Dusty seems determined not to play Keppinger at short stop. It should be a no brainer. Gonzo may continue to have problems...why not go with Keppinger he did a great job last season.

Come on Dusty...take a look at some stats.
