Reds 6, D-Backs 5: Eddie's big night

Brandon Phillips summed up Edwin Encarnacion's final at-bat nicely.

"He can't for (squat). But he sure can hit."

Phillips didn't say squat, but this is a family blog.

After failing to get down a bunt on three pitches, Encarnacion rocketed one into the left field seats for a three-run, walkoff home run.

Dusty Baker wanted it to happen this way -- really.

"You can't let him swing in that situation," Baker said. "He was struggling. I told (coach Chris Speier), 'I kind of hope he doesn't get it down so can hit a three-run homer, and he hit a three-run homer."

Say what you will about Encarnacion, he hits with runners on. He led the team with a .360 average last year.

"Being on the other side, he was one of the guys I didn't want to see up there in that situation," Baker said. "He's a clutch man."

This blog would have been full of comments urging the Reds to send Encarnacion to Louisville had he swung through that 2-2 pitch from Brandon Lyon. Encarnacion's been awful this spring and he made an throwing error in the fourth that led to two unearned runs Wednesday.

Encarnacion had to hear the boos. But he said he didn't let it get to him.

"I said there's five more innings anything can happen," he said. "Look at what happened."

I hate Encarnacion's error. What a terrible defense. He kills us.

Thank goodness for Edwin & his stellar defense.

Hey John! Isn't Mr. Coffey remarkable: invincible in spring training and the provider of a hitting fest in official MLB games. Look for more and worse as the season moves forward.

Dusty Baker: I was there for opening day and heard the thunderous applause - look for that to diminish soon...I handicap him at two at the most three years - then he's gone.

WOW!!!

What a way to start my night in wonderful Buenos AIres!!!

Thank you EE!!! Maybe now all the haters will think before they post everytime something isn't perfect!!!

Why to go Dusty, too! Your first of many, many wins in the QC!

Love!!!

And as Edwin rounds 2nd base, he says under his breath, "Hey 'Reds Fest' and 'Man', Stick THAT In Your Pipe and Smoke It!!!"

First, I am happy to win! Glad to see it.

But, Jeff Brantley wasn't wrong, EE is not a clutch player.

I would have pinch hit for him and made sure of a good bunt. I am glad to see Baker try to bunt there, that tells me a lot, but bring in a pitcher if you have too. AGAIN, I AM EXCITED EE HIT THE HOMER, AND I WISH HE COULD DO IT EVERY OTHER NIGHT, BUT LITTLE BALL WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS AND HOMERS WIN GAMES.

I LIKE THOM AND JEFF DOING THE GAMES BETTER, THEY BOTH KNOW MORE THAN WELSH.

Thank goodness for Edwin and his game-winning homerun.

Wow... I'm sorry. EE helped us...

Edwin's problem is once he makes the catch he rushes. He needs to slow down and go thru his mechanics of catch, release, and throw.

Or maybe, EE plays better in WARM weather like most ball players...especially guys from South of the States.

How many pitches did Arroyo throw today?

The site I usually use has not been loading.

Redlegs!!!

What a bunch of goofballs! Edwin is probably one of the Reds' BEST clutch players-check the stats!

He'll settle down defensively, wait and see!

Woo Reds win! Encarnacion's bat is so important to the Reds offense cus Griffey Jr. and Dunn are so streaky. They need Edwin and Brandon Phillips to carry them at times.

I saw the highlight of Encarnacion's errant throw...man was that ugly. Hopefully he settles down like he did last year, because he can be pretty impressive defensively when he isn't making throwing errors. He can make the spectacular plays for sure.

Great win for the Reds though. Nice to see Keppinger get 3 hits too.

loved hearing marty say eddie needs to ride the pine, promptly interrupted by a three run walkoff.

guys like him and cowboy and half this blog need to ease up. he plays so poorly at times because he's thinking instead of reacting or trying too hard. why? because he cares.

Cincinnati Sports Mentality. I am not from Cincinnati but lived there during college(Miami U) and became a huge Reds fan. I have lived in a couple different cities now and have watched local broadcasts of several different baseball teams including New York.
All I can say is that when the Reds finally turn things around you guys are going to need to fire your announcers. These guys are really horrible and I don't think enough people understand it. You guys have announcers saying players are drunk while playing, saying that a certain player was choking during a game, and now saying in the last inning of a close game that the player at the plate isn't clutch. ISN'T CLUTCH? The man batted .360 with RISP. That is such an absurdly clutch number and a retarded and unprofessional comment. Oh and he batted .471 with the bases loaded. The year before his numbers were .301 and .467 respectively. I honestly don't know who else I would prefer up when we have men on base and need runs. Having him bunt was weird because there were guys on the bench who could have laid down a bunt and played better defense. Regardless though, these announcers are downers, unprofessional and help fuel the negative attitude that Cincinnati fans are famous for. Watching Yankees games at home now is such a joy because the announcers are positive and professional. Leave the ridiculous comments for talk radio. I hope some of you agree and I know you can't say it Mr. Fay but I hope you agree too. I don't know what your voice sounds like but I elect that you start announcing games. Especially after your "positive comments" day.

It was somewhere in the mid 90
s. He hit 90 just before his last batter in the 6th.

Way to go Reds. EE's errors aside, I know it's early but I'm already sick of wathcing Junior hit into double plays. Ugh.

Marty also said ....... he would love to see the 2 guys that were having the worst springs hit back to back homers and end this thing --- meaning Dunn and EE -- so its not like he was totally down on Edwin.

I think Marty is too hard on Encarnacion, but with the Yankees announcers you have to factor in that the Yankees are in the playoffs every year and have won 4 World Series in the last 10 or so years. Not a whole lot to be negative about there.

I don't know whether it's true or not, but I think Marty and a lot of fans have perceived that certain players like Dunn and Encarnacion have been a part of the problem because of their lackadaisical play.

I kind of think that they've been around losing teams for so long that they didn't grow up learning how to play really hard and bring a winning attitude to the field every day.

I actually think Dunn could be a really good leader with the right guidance, because I actually think Dunn wants to win more than people might think.

With all that being said, I think Marty and the crew do add fuel to the fire a little too much. It's easy to listen Marty and think, "You know what. Edwin does stink and needs to be benched! There is no hope for him." I've had those thoughts at times.

Anyway, I think every year this comes up with the broadcasters. They are unique in that they aren't afraid to criticize, and rightfully so at times, but I think sometimes the crew gets carried away and overreacts.

Of course, winning is the main thing that can solve the issue of the announcers being too negative!

I agree with deathcab, as a fan base, Cincinnatians are complainers. It's a long season, and Edwin will figure it out, just like he did last season. Everyone just needs to chill out.

Oh, and I like the name, 'deathcabforkanye'. Both artists are good.

And E-squared, though frustrating, is one of the best clutch players on this team. So stop making stuff up those of you who say otherwise. You make youself look like [squat].

that idiot bill cunningham made the remark about dunn being drunk to fire up mongoloids that actually buy into his schtick. he's not a reds announcer.

marty is a hall of famer for a reason, and it's not cause he's unprofessional. if you want positive all the time, listen to grande and the stache.

i do agree that brantley and thom are over the top sometimes, both trying to impress marty it seems.

thought welsh did a decent job with the color on the radio last night, but like the cowboy, his play by play is awful. dude never shuts up.

i for one was sad to see the bad boy go, thought he and marty made a fine team.

Reds win IN SPITE of Dusty Baker! If you want to bunt in that situation, you have to have someone up there who can bunt(Casto since he has wasted Hopper and already used Freel). Terrible managing, glad to see Edwin redeem himself.

Brantley made a fool of himself, claiming that EE was not a clutch hitter. But he was right on about having him bunt.

Great to have real announcers last nite. White Noise and Creepy have got to go!

Scott.
He only hits into DPs if he happens to hit the ball. I guess its still not cool to slap the ball or bunt it to the left side.

I hope Cowboy brushes up on his facts before he makes another statement like he did last night. EE was the Reds best hitter with runners in scoring position in 2007with and avg of .360. Dunn, .241, Griffey .244 and Phillips .269 weren't even close to EE. To say he isn't a clutch hitter is ridiculous. I heard Marty made the comment that EE should be benched while the ball was being hit into the left field bleachers. I certainly hope these two very exceptional announcers do not start the negative BS already. I hope theym Marty and Cowboy can give EE, Dunn, Belisle and whoever else they are down on, a fair chance but I am not going to hold my breath. Failures and mistakes are part of what you get with baseball and life. If it is how you deal with them that matters, didn't EE show us all how to deal with them last night! Thanks Edwin, I appreciate you keeping your head up and winning that game for the Reds. Dunn should be commended for going the other way against the shift and we didn't hear a word from Cowboy on that last night! Sure do miss Joe Nuxhall in more ways than one.

Scott: I'm with you. I simply have no faith in Griffey anymore. Thankfully, he probably won't be here next season. I know it's early but still, do something!

at 10:24 AM Blogger MJ said...

Dunn really showed me something in his last at bat last night. He showed great bat control while lacing a single into left field going against the switch. If he could do that more with consistency then teams would stop using the ploy against him. Its open why not use it.

at 10:44 AM Blogger Unknown said...

Did Edwin take Jeff Brantley's sandwich out of the refrigerator and eat it? Geez, it's not just the clutch comment but the four others earlier in the game.

at 11:22 AM Blogger Steven Ross said...

Look...Brantley hit the nail on the head: Phillips plays for the team while others (think Griffey for sure) only swing for themselves. I think Dunn fell into this catagory last year but last night, his opposite field hit was a thing of beauty. I'm rootin' for the big horse!

Phillips and Keppinger do what it takes to win. The same can't be said for some in that clubhouse.

I am happy that some people agree with me on the announcer situation. I thought that the drunk comment might not have been from an announcer but I had no idea it was Bill Cunningham. That dude is crazy, he got a lot of national play with his whole Barrack Hussein Obama speil. Marty is a great announcer, its really just Thom and Brantley that I think should try to be more positive, especially during the first week of the season. They should have been talking about how Encarnacion had made two big errors in the game and this was his chance to make up for them. Then they would have looked intelligent when he hit the game winning homerun instead of what they said. I also agree that Yankees announcers have more the be positive about but even when times are bad the really negative talk is saved for sports talk radio where it belongs. I am jealous of all of you who get to go to Reds games this year but final season games at Yankee stadium will have to suffice. Once again, I think John Fay should be an announcer. I am starting a petition. By the way, Paul O'neill is announcing for the Yankees this year. Wish the reds could have gotten him instead of the Yankees, he is great.

That's the problem! He's releasing the ball before throwing it!

"EE is not a clutch hitter" - Jeff Brantley. I still can't believe 99% of the baseball world believes that some hitters are "clutch" while others are not. Face it, the best hitters will be the best in the best situations. EE is an average player, so he is "clutch" about half the time. David Eckstein is not "clutch" because he is usually not a good hitter anyways. And Dusty Baker really seems to be trying to take all the credit here. Man up! YOU WERE WRONG BAKER!

Congrats to EE though!

at 4:37 PM Blogger Unknown said...

Dusty is the worst manager in baseball. There's a reason no one would hire him last year, he's clueless about the simplest statistics or situations. Even having the guy up there trying to bunt was ridiculous.

at 11:54 AM Blogger MJ said...

Edwin dang near threw another one away last night if not for a nice grab and tag from Votto. Last nights problem was we just couldn't get that extra hit to break innings wide open. Not a good showing from Fogg.
