Reds 12, Pirates 11

It took 3 hours and 30 minutes but the Reds beat the Pirates 12-11 Saturday at Ed Smith Stadium.

"I knew it would be a high-scoring game with that wind," Dusty Baker said.

The Reds won it with two runs in the ninth after the Pirates scored four in the top of tne ninth. The game ended when Scott Hatteberg's bloop dropped between two outfielders along the left field line.

Ken Griffey Jr. hit a two-run home run to left-center, a high bomb. An out, Adam Dunn took one out to right.

And back and forth we went from there.

Aaron Harang worked a 1-2-3 first, however, he walked a batter and gave up back-to-back doubles in the second to make it 3-2.

The Reds scored a run on back-to-back singles from Andy Phillips and Javy Valentin and a Pirate error. Juan Castro drove in another run. It was 5-2 after 2.

Left-hander Matt Maloney followed Harang. Maloney gave up two in the third on a walk, rocket double by Andrew McCutchen and a Xavier Nady single. Maloney walked two to start the fourth. He was replaced by Tyler Pelland. The inherited runners scored on a sacrifice, a sac fly and a hit. That made it 6-5..

Maloney came in the clubhouse as we were talking to Aaron Harang. "That's the worst I've ever thrown a baseball," he said.

Harang, by the by, was cordial and filled our notebooks following a how-did-it-go-out-there question.

Josh Roenicke pitched a 1-2-3 fifth with two strikeouts.

The Reds tied it on Drew Anderson's RBI single in the fifth.

Gary Majewski kept it tied through the sixth. But Jared Burton gave up a home run to Steve Pearce in the seventh.

The Redlegs took the lead back in the seventh. Sac fly from Andy Green, RBI triple for Drew Anderson.

Chris Dickerson hit a two-run bomb in the eighth to make it 10-7.

Jim Brower, Jon Coutlangus and Jon Adkins combined to give the lead away in the ninth.

But Craig Tatum doubled in a run for the Reds. He scored on Hatteberg's hit.

Headed down to Sarasota in a couple of weeks for my first spring training experience. Anyone have any suggestions on watering holes or anything else I should take in around Sarasota/Lido?

Matt Maloney pitched poorly today but I thought it was interested that while I was reading Baseball America'a Top 100 that they mentioned that Matt Maloney has had the most strikeouts (357) of any minor league pitcher in the last two years.

Change is the only thing "you" can't change.

Maybe Dusty's year away from baseball will help him improve his thought process about Vets & rooks.

Gil sounds like he tearing it up,what his chance of making the show,John?

I remember Andy Abad a couple springs ago,he tore spring training a new ___(Use you imaginantion) but could not hit once he got to the show, therefore he got demoted the 1st week in.

John..did keppinger get any hits this afternoon?

Who is Zobist of the Rays? He is available for trade. I have readed where maybe they would take Bray for him. Is Janish, a major league shortstop? Any comments?

the good news today is that Majewski lowered his ERA lol.

I still say trading with the SF Giants for Velez would be a move of genius for the Reds. Blazing speed, he's taking reps at 2B, 3B, and OF -- maybe we can get him for Majewski, Coffey, and Gonzalez?

Rosales and Bruce and Keppinger and Votto would be 4 other names I'd like to see on the major league roster on here on opening day.

It's 70 degrees & sunny in Denver today,Thought I'd let you all know.

Jack, just curious, are you a "One flew over the cuckoos nest" fan,I see your handles are very similar to the movies characters.Great book & movie. One of my fav's.You kinda remind me of the character Jack Nicholsen played in that movie, the instigator!

Not dissing you Jack,I like your post & baseball knowledge.I also like how you say what you wanna say without regret or remorse.

redleggs..julie here.. jack is at the office. but thank you.. he is a character. I dont think he instigates anything..sometimes reality can be painful to those in denial..yet he goes to games and supports the team

I'm glad that Harang was "cordial" to your questions John, but for goodness sakes, give Bailey a break. He was bombarded by the media last year only to have them turn on him as soon as they realized he wasn't going to win the Cy Young. I can see why he'd be a little frustrated with you guys. I really enjoy watching Homer and I'm looking forward to having more chances to watch him develop this year.
Also, today's game was both very exciting and very annoying. I'm glad Jim Brower is not our real closer.

I agree Cheviot..Julie would never post on this blog. I wish we could stick to baseball

I consider all posts from anyone without their name in blue with a big 'B' in front of it as coming from the same person. So IMHO at least 90% of the nonsense non baseball posts are coming from the same moron.

I got no problem with Homer. I was more amused than annoyed. Dealing with media is part of routine. He free to do anyway he likes or not do at all.

at 7:27 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Fay,

What you have no problem? I'd be po'd too if you said this about me...see your own words...Cueto, Bailey and Volquez throw today. I'll report back with what I see. my guess is I could hit any of them.

I was being faceious there.

I've written many times how good their stuff is. I've got Bailey making the rotation.

John obviously meant faceTious. Enough with the childishly, petty spellcheck police. At least John participates in his blog, unlike his Bengals counterpart.

John nto sure if you know this or not but do you think ESPN will show a game this year on wednesday night baseball or do you think they will only show the NY and boston all year

strictly sox / yanks this year the way it looks.

haven't you seen the new poll, do we live in a red sox nation or a yankees country?

they need to add a 3rd choice to that poll, they could call it "I'd rather gargle drano than be a part of red sox nation or yankees country" or maybe "I'd rather watch a game with Jack and his imaginary girlfriend than root for either of those 2 clubs"

Forgive my son, he's a nasty cretin. We try to keep him in a cage under the porch with his Coutlangus plush toy but he gnaws his way out so often, well, we need a better cage.

Coutlangus and Brower might want to start looking into car-dealerships or broadcasting or some other line of work....

Can't wait to see the man of a thousand chins pitch today.

Go Mike! Show us the money!

That we wasted on giving you more than a one year deal...

Keppinger emerged for Cincinnati in 2007 when he batted .332 with five home runs and 32 RBIs in 67 games. A dependable glove as a utility infielder, he committed two of his three errors at shortstop. The 27-year-old made 43 of his 55 starts at shortstop when Gonzalez was either injured or out on bereavement leave for family reasons.

Before last season, Keppinger's only substantial experience at shortstop was in high school and college.

PLAYED DARN GOOD FOR ONLY HAVING HS EXPERIENCE KEPPINGER IS MUCH BETTER THAN AG

The Reds aren't schedule on ESPN this spring. Looks like today's game is on TV in Toronto -- if anyone can get City TV.

ken broo is either a complete idiot, or just plain lazy. his rant this morning about how much spring training games matter is completely baseless, something anyone could figure out in about 5 minutes if they'd bother to check the standings on any number of websites. wish they'd bring back the 2 angry guys.

at 10:19 AM Blogger Cheviot Sports Authority said...

I didn't hear his comments this morning but I agree, Ken Broo is a babbling idiot about all sports.

I quit listening to him when he said that the Bearcats would be the best BB team in the area by regular seasons end.

Spring training games are to get the vets ready for the start of the season and to make decisions on those competing for jobs. Standings couldn't matter less.

I agree Cheviot..same holds true for pre season games in football

I especially enjoyed Paul's article on Brandon Phillips. I really hope his sophomore year here is excellent. He is a great guy. When we sat in my fathers seats behind 1st base he was kind enough to give Jack, I and many others his autograph before the game. A real class guy and great player

I decided to not post too much here because of your childish antics Jack, and the only time I post is when I log in.

So don't flatter yourself, you're not worth the effort... although I must be because you see me behind every rock, tree, and bush!

John, what happened to Gil, I obviously missed that he is also out.

Catcher is a big worry of mine, how is Ross coming with his back?

I would like to add my vote to the many others to end anonymous posting.

More important than making folks put a name to what they say, that would allow for the removal of accounts of repeat abusers such as 'ANGRY DAYTON'.

There obviously is a need for those who have differing opinions, that's what a blog is about. It is clear to me that 'ANGRY DAYTON' has no interest in joining, or even leading the conversation. All he ever does is post basically the same flame style comment over and over which never has anything to do with the subject being discussed. OK, he hates Wayne Krivsky, got it!

He reminds me of some of the posters on the UC space during football season that were obviously O$U zealots. They had no other interest but to also toss frags. It seemed as if they were worried UC might become competitive with O$U in recruiting.

I'm fully aware that you don't want us posting comments criticizing other posters, but that rule obviously isn't being enforced and hopefully this post will be allowed. Also, I doubt I’m alone in this opinion of this user.

It's coming, maybe in as litlte as two weeks.

I'm trying to remove offending posts. But I'm often away from the computer and miss some from time to time. For that, I'm sorry.

at 12:54 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Julie,

I really don't want to belabor the point. I totally share you thoughts as to his value to the Reds and apparent quality personality.

But to keep the record stright, Brandon Phillips was acquired from Cleveland late in spring training in '06. The upcoming '08 season will be his third or Junior season with the Reds.

at 12:56 PM Blogger jdeezman said...

There is no need for you to be sorry John.

I'm sorry that you have to put up with this juvenile crap still, some of which I was guilty of in the past. I don't do it anymore, and won't in the future, I just want Reds information.

For that I will thank you for again.
