Nice gesture from Jay
The biggest reason the Reds refuse to consider trading Jay Bruce is the fact that he's an outstanding baseball player. But he's also an outstanding person. This little story shows how mature and thoughtful he is for a 20-year-old:
When Bruce heard Sheldon "Chief" Bender died last week, he asked Reds PR man Rob Butcher for the address of Bender's family. He wanted to write them a letter of condolence and appreciation. Bruce won the Chief Bender Award, as the Reds' top minor leaguer last year.
"I met him a couple of times," Bruce said. "He was a great guy. I thought I should let the family know I appreciated the award."

Classy. He has something that cannot be measured by scouting reports or statistics. Class and simple respect for others.
Whatever he does in his career,I'll will have more respect for him for the person he is rather that the ballplayer he will be.
That is pretty cool.
redsfanwoody..what bruce did was very nice and I am certain the Bender family got many such letters from both current and past Reds players.
lets not over react
I think the Reds have always had an abundance of good people on the club..including Ken Griffey..he does alot for the community that people are unaware of. But.. I could care less about the way they comport themselves..I would rather us have a winner on the field
I don't think you're allowed to use the word "comport" here.
good lord, how many different names is this tool gonna post under?
I know, what an idiot and mockery he has made of this outstanding blog. John does so much better than that Mark Curnette guy in answering questions.

Jay Bruce is the REAL DEAL. I've watched him play in 3 different levels and he keeps getting better. In addition, I've met him once and know people that have played with him and all say he's a first class kid.
He's the next face of the Cincinnati Reds.
jay bruce, joey votto, keppinger and others provide for a great nucleus of players for years to come we hope
I never intended my remarks to be taken as negative..i just am more concerned about performance rather than off field charity,..we want a winner
John I hope that the day soon is coming that will require every blogger to utilize and internet email addy and put an end to this anonymous posting..very immature
Bruce as well as Votto come across as very level headed individuals and it does help that they have level (slight uppercut) swings. I imagine that Volquez and Cueto pal around some. John who does Homer pal around with?
Class act by a young man whose parents obviously taught him manners.
High character and great skills are something this team really needs.
I just hope Dusty give our rookies a chance to play. He favors the veterans. This was a knock against him in Chicago.
Great story and a good indication of what that young man is about.
BTW - Every time Jack of BA posts about him and his new girlfriend, I can't help but think of the movie Lars and the Real Girl. Not sure why...
Julie/Jack
I really don't care about your opinion.
Very classy and thoughtful. I just wish some of the 25 man roster would have found the time to pay their respects to Nuxy and his family.
Go JAY BRUCE! Hope you have a great career with the REDS!
It's more like Julie and the real boy, isn't it?
Jay Bruce is ready. We're ready.
600+ ABs for Bruce this year promises a fun season.
Come on Dusty! If Grady Sizemore can leadoff, so can Jay Bruce!
Anon (1:21),
You and I both. Hahahahaha!
