unbelievable. Patterson still batting leadoff. I'd rather see Dunn bat 1st and Patterson 7th, than the lineup Baker is throwing out there tonight.

YES!!!! Corey Patterson! The Reds should win easily tonight!

I am so very done with corey Patterson in the leadoff spot. He is one of the fastest guys in the league and has a great glove but never hits the ball on the ground, so his speed goes unused. Also, his job is to get on base anyway possible in order to disrupt the starting pitcher by making him pitch from the stretch and check him on the paths. None of these things he does, it could help with the teams hitting as a whole. If kep was fine with it, his OBP would work great there.

Go Reds!

Einstein said insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Why in $%^& is Dusty playing Patterson? Amazingly even more still, he's got him at lead-off AGAIN. Thoroughly un-freaking-believable!

at 4:05 PM Blogger Kenworld said...

Can someone PLEASE tell Dusty that Cory Patterson has no business on the field (the team or even in the stadium)!!!!!!!!!
This is bordering on insanity. (isn't insanity doing the same thing every time expecting a different result.)

at 4:10 PM Blogger Ray Kinsella said...

John,

Would you PLEASE ask Dusty why he continues to bat Cory Patterson 1st? For that matter, why is he still on the team? The fact that NOONE offered him a contract during the off-season should tell you something.

again with patterson? batting out of order? can you say joke? can we trade baker for pinella or leyland, please? we need to hear from you soon walt, the ship is sinking....again.

it makes my day when i see corey-can't-hit-patterson lead off.

at least dunn is in his rightful spot.

at 4:19 PM Blogger Volquez for Prez said...

how low does patterson's average have to get before dusty sits him?? .150?? unbelievable. but, at least kepp's in the 2-hole.

at 4:20 PM Blogger Unknown said...

Anyone talk to Dusty about having the pitcher bat 8th? We could put Adam Dunn in the 9 hole...its doing wonders for Jason Kendall! And some website that analyzed it said a team avgs approximately 0.1 more runs per game with the pitcher hitting 8th. I dunno how, but apparently its correct based on Cardinal and Brewer lineup production before and after the switch.

What is up with Patterson batting leadoff? From what I understand, he is a very good fielding CF, but batting someone who is at .198 leadoff with a career OBP below .300???? I don't really understand that.

Patterson should be dropped to 8th in my opinion, and everyone else moved up one spot in the order.

Harang gets his run support tonight as Reds win 7 - 3

By the way Jay Bruce was 4 - 4 in the first game of the Bats double header today with 2 doubles , 2 runs , a homerun ( his 7th ) , and 2 rbi's while in game 2 he was 1 - 3 with a run scored

Louisville won the first game 7 - 0 and won the second game 2 - 1

patterson back in the lineup? no hairston? griffey.. wasting more time?

at 4:32 PM Blogger Jaybee said...

Soooo . . . Corey's batting first so he won't forget where he's listed in the lineup? Hehehe!

I probably won't watch tonight. Seeing Patterson in a Reds uniform disgraces the heritage of Bench, Perez, Concepcion, Foster, Sanders, and all of the rest of the "real" Reds. I'm surprised Mr. Castellini has sanctioned this roster, given his public statement of his fandom.

at 4:37 PM Blogger socalred said...

not patterson again! That loser needs to be released. He's at best a defensive replacement in the later part of a game, and NEVER should lead off, Wake up Dusty!

at 4:39 PM Blogger stew said...

John,

I know that you have commented on this before but at what point do you see the reds making some roster moves? I know it is often easier said than done but do you think something is coming soon or will we have to wait until July for anything significant to happen? Running the same old thing out everyday doesn't seem to be doing any good.

at 4:48 PM Blogger socalred said...

Why is Patterson leading off again?
If you must start him, please bat him 8th .

at 4:48 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nooooooo, please not Patterson again!

at 4:53 PM Blogger LongTimeRedsFan said...

A new low yesterday. CP out without even coming to the plate. Why wait for him to strikeout? Today he should be out even before the game starts.

at 4:54 PM Blogger Brendan T said...

Freel's batting .280 against righties and Patterson is batting .217, yet Patterson keeps getting in the lineup. I'm surprised he didn't move Kepp down to 8th after getting a few more hits yesterday.

at 4:58 PM Blogger Joe said...

I thought Jr. was ok with batting 2nd. Dunn in the 7th spot again. Signs of what the future holds without him?

Hope the Reds get to Badenhop quickly and often tonight. I know the Marlins are hot, but this should be a good series, considering recent hitting trends, for the Reds to get rolling with a few, (three for those of you nay-sayers) wins.

Y'know, Dusty's ongoing commitment to Patterson is starting to look like spite. Patterson's probably among the worst 10 offensive players in the major leagues; meanwhile, decent players (Freel, Hairston) are sitting RIGHT OVER THERE. Patterson's gotten the same playing time as Joey Votto, for God's sake.

As a 5th OF, I'm fine with Patterson. But he's a terrible everyday OF and he's hurting the club; isn't it Jocketty's responsibility to challenge Dusty on this?

Until the madness stops I'm going to complain every time Patterson sits atop the Reds lineup. Dusty!!!, get an idea Patterson is an awful leadoff hitter.

at 5:04 PM Blogger drewp99 said...

How long is it going to take for the Reds to give up on Corey Patterson? I realize he is a Dusty Baker guy but come on already. When Hopper comes back will they finally release him?

at 5:18 PM Blogger Unknown said...

Bring on the Patterson haters....

I'm sure people will mention me by name when they respond, even though I didn't pick a side for the Patterson debate. Just predicting the blog "weather".

at 5:19 PM Blogger Rob said...

I hope Griffey isnt pressing. Hes probably been trying to get 600 out of the way. He looked good vs the Mets- had a couple close calls. Experimenting with Dunn at 7. Not a bad idea keeping power throughout the lineup. I did like the notion of hitting Kepp, Dunn and Edwin 1-2-3. Phillips has to get out of the cleanup spot- hes not a cleanup hitter.

at 5:22 PM Blogger WTF said...

Wow Dusty Baker is a genius. Or Corey Patterson is blackmailing him. First he gets an underserved 3 mil, after two teams gave up on him. And spring training started, but the other 29 teams didn't want him. Now our best center fielder who's hitting what around .315 gets benched yet again so Patterson can hit .196. Pathetic. Simply Pathetic

at 5:38 PM Blogger Zippy said...

Another instant classic! Once again, Dusty's got the two worst hitters hitting #1 and #3 (gotta make sure they get more ABs than anyone else), and two of the top three OBP guys at the bottom.

In fact, with the exception of Keppinger, Dusty's managed to create a batting order that is almost the exact OPPOSITE of an order based on the OBP of the starters, which would look like this:

Bako
Keppinger
Dunn
EE
Votto
Griffey
Phillips
Patterson

And then of course there's the fact that most of the bench players also have higher OBPs than Patterson, which makes it even more ironic to have him leading off.

Bravo, Dusty!

I hope Patterson proves us all wrong and gets on base three times tonight.

But you have to think that he won't. He's never faced the Marlins pitcher and he will probably look like a fool each time he's up to bat. Memo to Dusty: LET SOMEONE ELSE SET THE LINEUP, YOU'RE MISERABLE AT IT.

John, has any of the regular writers asked Mr. Baker why he keeps starting Patterson? If so, what is his explanation? As a long time fan (since 1970) I don't know if I've ever seen a move that made any less since than signing and starting Patterson day-after-frustrating-day? I'm sure he's nice guy, but please-please-please can't he be nice on the bench???

at 6:29 PM Blogger TimmyT said...

Dusty owes an apology to Aaron Harang for trotting out this worthless retread of a baseball player (Patterson) as our leadoff hitter. Dusty's only sending up 7 hitters (Actually 6 hitters when you take Dunn out.) Our ace pitcher deserves better than this. Walt, get some gumption and do something about this NOW. Put us out of our misery!!!!!! I've never been a Freel fan as an everyday starter, but anyone over Patterson is an improvement.

at 6:37 PM Blogger Red Faced said...

Can someone suggest that Dusty start pulling the lineup out of a hat. At least that way the chance that Patterson will leadoff will be slim.

Or we could bat the pitcher leadoff, now that's an idea. I'm shocked the Brewers and Cards haven't thought of that one.

Did Patterson win the OH lottery and I just miss it? I mean 3 mil isn't no powerball jackpot but he certainly isn't earning that money.

at 8:41 PM Blogger Joe said...

I'm not a Patterson defender and one two hit night is not going to make me one, but one has to wonder if he is not due for a hot streak?

Just like Dunn, he is over due as well. Good time for a three run homer.
