Reds v. Blue Jays lineup, schedule

Jay Bruce CF
Norris Hopper LF
Jeff Keppinger SS
Brandon Phillips 2B
Edwin Encarnacion 3B
Scott Hatteberg 1B
Ryan Freel DH
Chris Dickerson RF
Paul Bako C

Bronson Arroyo P, followed by Johnny Cueto, Francisco Cordero, David Weathers, Kent Mercker, Mike Lincoln, Mike Stanton. Justin Lehr, Marcus McBeth, Adam Pettyjohn and Ramon Ramirez are also on the trip.

Notice the leadoff guy? "We're trying some stuff," Dusty Baker said. "That's what spring training is about."

The game is on WLW.

Schedule:

Monday: Minnesota in Ft. Myers, 1:05 p.m., Jeremy Affeldt v. Glen Perkins, no radio. Also pitching: Jon Adkins, Brad Salmon, Tyler Pelland, Jon Coutlangus, Scott Sauerbeck and Richie Gardner.

Tuesday: Cleveland at home, 1:05 p.m., Matt Belisle v. Cliff Lee, no radio. Also pitching: Josh Fogg, Sergio Velanzuela, Daryl Thomspon, Alexander Smit.

Wednesday: Boston at Ft. Myers, 1:05 p.m., Homer Bailey v. Jon Lester, no radio. Also pitching: Edinson Volquez, Ramon Ramirez, Tom Shearn, Marcus McBeth, Adam Pettyjohn.

Thursday: Yankees at home, 1:05 p.m., TBA v. TBA, no radio.

The Reds announced they signed Juan Duran, a 16-year-old outfielder from Dominican Republic. It's first I remember them announcing a Latin American signing. "We like him a lot," Wayne Krivsky said.

Apparently, Baseball America is planning on making a big deal of the signing. The competition for Dominican players has picked up lately.

It went from 70 degrees to a snow storm in one day. We'll I guess that means one thing,Powder day!!!Heading up to the mountain for some turns.

I hope Bruce has a big game,I'd like to see this guy man the CF position, but not by default.

I really hope that Bruce leading off works out, it will cause alot of other things to fall into place. I still think Dusty will open the season with veterans, but long term, if this works out, it leaves no unanswered questions in the starting lineup.

Bruce
Keppinger
Griffey
Philips
Dunn
Votto
Encarnacion
Ross

Anybody NOT think thats a good lineup?

The game is also on Toronto's TV which you can see if you have the MLB.TV package. I have the package because I live out of market in Texas so at least I can see my Reds.

John,

Who else is scheduled to pitch today?

Anonymous,

I love the lineup. Still have my concerns about Ross though. He has a heck of a lot to prove this spring. .215 avg isn't going to cut it.

Great News about the signing of the 16 year old Dominican player.Odviously we have not seen much International scouting prior to the Krivsky days. For all of you who act as if Krivsky just has inherited other peoples picks are mistaken. He may not have found this player himself, but he has put the pieces in place to turn this club around.

Lets talk,

I agree, Hed better hit, I think if he has a year even close to last year, WK will be looking to sign a catcher.

Our catching prospects are too far off.

The only thing that might save him would be if pitchers had this kind of year.

Wins

AH 18
BA 15
HB 15
MB 12
EV 12

Like I said, hed better hit.

I'd say that's a good leadoff hitter who drives in two runs!

John,
Why did Bruce come out early?

Kevin Ftm,
What would be acceptable stats for Ross? I would around .255 15 hrs...

Woody,

Yeah something like that, but I dont think its quite that simple. I would be more inclined to focus on his slg % and risp, he really needs to keep the bottom of the lineup alive, instead of stranding so many. And as I mentioned before, you have to figure in the success (or lack of) of the rotation.

Two things:
1. Joey Votto should be our leadoff hitter. He has speed and a great OBP - why shouldn't he be considered?
2. I think it's a no-brainer that the Reds should sign Mike Piazza to an incentive-laden 1-year deal. He's exactly the right-handed power bat that our lineup needs. He also is a great part of a Votto-Piazza lefty-right platoon at 1B. This also would allow us to trade away Scott Hatteberg, making this more affordable. PLus this allows Dusty to carry 3 catchers. What do you guys think?

Petey,

I also mentioned bringing in Piazza a while back, but strictly as a bat off the bench (and to mentor Ross)but he doesnt catch anymore, and would be a liability @ 1b.

Votto vs Bruce as leadoff? Too early to tell, but typically, you groom your 1b to be a little bigger, and hit for more power. I think Votto needs a couple seasons in the weight room, to eventually be a 20 - 25 hr guy, a la Derrick Lee.

Petey in LA- Right on with Votto as leadoff. He has a high OBP and can steal a base. Leading off a few games with an instant HR lead is fine too. No way for Piazza though.

Looks like Stanton is already in mid-season form. Giving up homers and the lead.

I am so excited. I just ordered my number 29 Stanton jersey.

at 2:03 PM Blogger redfuture said...

It's just one game but I'm almost glad that Stanton gave up the monster mash HR to weakling Coats. I almost wish for a bad outing from Mike every outing this spring. Affeldt & Mercker will better LH options and there are to many flame throwing RHs to keep 3 LHs in the bullpen.

I don't think it's a bad idea (Piazza). My question is, can he catch at all? I mean if someone gets hurt can he catch? He for sure shouldn't be expected to catch much if at all but keeping him for an off the bench hitter and emergency third catcher isn't a bad idea if you can get him for cheap enough.
