Quality Bruce gag

Jay Bruce rushed to the Ed Smith Stadium complex this morning. Bruce was back in the lineup for the tonight's second game against Pittsburgh.

But Adam Dunn called Bruce and told him he was in the first game, as well. Bruce was sleeping when the phone rang. Dunn said Bruce fell for the gag. Dunn wanted to call it off.

"You can't mess with someone's sleep," Dunn said.

But a couple of others talked him into not making the second call.

They let Bruce think he was playing for a few minutes before Dunn told him the truth.

"I thought they could be messing with me," Bruce said. "But I didn't want to take the chance."

Best line came from David Weathers when Bruce still thought he was in both games: "Don't they know what you did at Double-A last year?

Bruce is hard guy not to like. He's not as outgoing as Sean Casey, but I'd put him on the level with Casey on the Nice Guy Scale. Bruce is a guy that gets along with everyone.

Cincinnati will absolutely love the guy.

I have not posted before and it's hard to get Reds news here in NJ.

Thanks for your insightful commentary.

You mentioned you were going to speak with Homer Bailey the other day. I have been bothered by all the anti-Homer buzz in the past week. He's just a kid.

Best spring training gag of all-time was the Phillies telling one of their pitchers he had been traded to a Japanese team and had to be there in 24 hours.

The manager, teammates, the press, everybody was in on it. CLASSIC.

That was a hilarious post. Bruce seems to be the type of guy the Reds could build their franchise around. For the record, John you are the best blogger i have ever seen, great work.

Rosecrans told a funny story day before yesterday that happened in the Red Sox visiting clubhouse. Hal McCoy was sitting in a chair beside Dusty's desk during the morning interview. Hal McCoy fell back in the chair. Dusty caught him and said that was a "Yankee Trap". Dusty then said that he may sitting in the "injector seat".

Yeah, the Phillies gag was great. They even made up a great fictitious name for the japanese player. Kobayashi-The hot dog eating champion. Classic.

By the way John, I wanted to ask about Maloney. I know it's early but I'm really disappointed with the way he has struggled. He couldn't find the plate the first game he pitched in and now he gets rocked in his second appearance. He is 24, but he's a college player who should be more major-league ready. Did you see him pitch both times? Is it location or velocity? Is he pulling a Rick Ankiel on us? He is the minor league strikeout leader the last few years and has decent(not great) control. I know we just gave up a half season of Kyle Lohse for him, but it's still disappointing.

Keep Adam Dunn away from all of our promising young guys! We do not need him rubbing off on anyone. I know Freel has had his issues in the past and is no where near the star as Dunn, but I would rather him mentor the young guys. At least the young guys would then be influenced by someone that respects the game!
Thank goodness Dunn will only be here one more year.
