Reds Insider From news of the day to news of the weird, John Fay provides a glimpse of what it’s like to cover the Cincinnati Reds
John Fay has been the Reds beat writer for the Enquirer since 2001. Prior to that, he served in a variety of roles for the Enquirer: backup Reds writer, UC beat writer, backup Bengals writer and as a general assignment reporter. He is a Cincinnati native and a graduate of Elder High School and the University of Dayton.
Just finished pitching. In three innings, he gave up five hits and two earned runs. He walked one batter and struck out two. He threw 28 strikes in 42 pitches.
I saw a rumor that the Reds may be more willing than ever to trade Bailey. I really hope not. They have not seen enough of him at the big league level to know his value to the team. Reds... be smart this year, please!!
yeah the Reds should have definitely traded a potential number 2 who they control for five years for Blanton, a guy with a 5 plus ERA. Probably should have thrown in Cueto and Votto just to make sure the fleecing was complete.
I read the same thing, and one "evaulator" said that Bailey acts like a person who thinks he has everything figured out...when he clearly does not. He's getting a reputation for being somewhat difficult to work with because he won't listen.
• The stock of Cincinnati prospect Homer Bailey seems to have taken a dramatic tumble in the past year. Talent evaluators say the Reds have demonstrated a clear willingness to deal Bailey, while coveting fellow prospect Johnny Cueto. And rival teams have grown increasingly skeptical about whether the young right-hander will make the adjustments necessary to become a successful big league pitcher. "What you hear is that [Bailey] is someone who thinks he's got it all figured out," one evaluator said.
Yeah and if Homer had three more innings of no run innings added then it would have been a quality start. It is hard to judge a starter from three innings. A lot of starters can give up early runs and then get in a groove. Spring Training stats are worthless until the starters start going deeper into the games.
Who cares about EARLY Spring training stat lines. As long as someones velocity isn't down or can't hit the broad size of a barn with multiple pitches, let Spring Training be just that.
This is Bailey's year to figure it out, or at least figure out that he doesn't have it figured out.
Its amazing how Bailey can go from a sure-fire future ace of the team one year to trade-bait the next. This is spring training people! Some of the greatest pitchers in the game struggle in spring training and he isn't exactly struggling here. It is a time to work on mechanics and pitches. Winning spring training games means absolutely nothing. It is just an opportunity to pitch/hit/catch and throw in live-game situations. Bailey will be fine. He has a tremendous arm, he is smart and is young. If the Reds don't do something stupid like trade him, they may finally have a homegrown talent become something special for once. Just do what seems to be impossible in this town....be a little patient, at least until the end of spring training!
42 pitches thru 3 innings isn't that bad tho. That's 14 pitches an inning. I think that's around average for a decent starting pitcher. Harang averaged 15.5 last season. In no way am I trying to compare Kid Texas to Harang. But honestly, 42 pitches is not bad, especially for Kid Texas.
Hard seeing Bailey not making the team. I mean come on. The Reds are going with their youngest and livest arms (as they should), even if they have no command.
Harang, Arroyo, Belisle, Affeldt, Volquez
Cordero Weathers Burton Bailey Fogg Cueto Bray (if healthy) Alternates: Roenicke Stanton or Coutlangus could linger (sadly) because of our lack of lefties
Some rotation/bullpen candidates could switch. But from a personnel standpoint, can it really break any different than that?
He is a Prima Donna and a jerk. While he certainly could mature and realize that treating people well gets you further in life than the contrary, at this point I'd say Karma is a bee-otch.
Maybe he will be fine, maybe not, but at this point he looks like a man (he's not a kid anymore) who thinks his 93 mph fastball should be enough to get big-leaguers out. It's not.
Thoroughly unlikable and unrootable, in my opinion. What a shame...
"If you want to go to the negative side, I had bases loaded one out, get a strikeout, and the next pitch, me being the stubborn ass I am, I shake off Bako for a curveball that he hits up the middle to score two. I guess I was wrong on that one. Bako called for a fastball, it was a good pitch, but (Red Sox catcher Kevin Cash) is a good hitter and he hit it up the middle."
It is part of the process, trust your catcher. Last year he was shaking off the curveball. Sounds like he is trying a different pitch strategy this spring, and it is a good thing he is focusing on his curveball.
Still need to be on the same page as the catcher...
I don't believe that the Reds signed Fogg to pitch out of the Bullpen. Stanton is going to be on this team barring injury, noway they dropped him out of spring owing him over 3 million. Don't discount Coffey making this team. no way Roenicke makes the team. It's still early so almost anything can still happen, but I can see Bailey, Cueto and possibly Volquez all starting at AAA. That's just the way the Reds seem to think.
These Homer haters are unbelievable. Sandy Koufax or Bob Gibson didn't strike out the side every inning when they were 21 years old. Give the kid a break. All I hear is why is Kvrisky loading the roster with run of the mill vets? Let the kids learn. Laugh my ass off. The kids "learn" and that ain't good enough.
Willing to trade Homer doesn't mean that the organization has soured on him or that his value is less than it was yesterday. Willing to trade him means that the organization feels it has young depth at the position, and he's the one with major league exposure. They were willing to trade him for a #1 starter like Bedard. [sarcasm]Wow, how bad Homer must be. [/sarcasm]
24/7, put Homer in the rotation, move Volquez to the pen, start Cueto in AAA, and that looks like your opening day pitching staff.
^^yes, get rid of Coutlangus as well....guy hasnt done anything lately to warrant getting a spot....looks like they are not even pitching him which might be a sign
I heard bailey's change was working today, thats a good sign he needs it to go with his other pitches. Also he seemed to have more confidence in that plus curve, once he gets control of that monster I see him doing pretty good.
Pitcher A - 6-14,5.61 ERA, 155ip, 181 hits, 74 walks, 101 strikeouts as a 21 year old.
Pitcher B - 43ip, 4.74 ERA, 50 hits, 16 walks and 28 strikeouts as a 21 year old.
Pitcher C - 64ip, 5.48 ERA, 74 hits, 33 walks and 37 strikeouts as a 21 year old.
Who are these no name pitchers who struggled big time at the same age Bailey is now?
Ah, that would be Greg Maddux, Johan Santana and John Smoltz.
As for reports about Bailey's 'attitude' and Baileys 'inability to take instruction'.... well I talk to plenty of baseball people too and I hear more on the side that are pretty much saying if Bailey doesn't exactly get along with you, yeah, he might come off like he has an 'attitude problem'. As for the taking instruction.... from the sounds of it from our manager, he has been all ears this spring.
I would be interested in knowing who Buster Olney talked to and what they said exactly, because that is not what I am hearing from the people I talk to.

should have traded him when the Reds had the chance

Million dollar arm...ten cent head!
that 5 plus era is on the road, sorry.
John,
Correct that Homer is completely healthy? I recall he had some injuries last year.
I realize this is only spring training, but he doesn't seem to be doing that well thus far.

you all need to calm down..its still very early..
yet its funny how i got dissed for saying Bailey was overrated .
Oh well, lets just be grateful that baseball is just around the corner and that soon we will be able to go to GABP and enjoy our team
42 pitches thru 3 innings isn't bad. 66% strikes isn't bad either. I'd like to know how he actually threw the ball, not what his numbers say.

That's not to say I don't appreciate the info, John. Let's put it in perspective.

28 strikes out of 42 pitches is pretty good. 42 pitches for 3 innings and 5 hits not so good. He will have to do better than that or he is AAA bound.

Homer growing up? From CTR:

Omnired, if Belisle doesn't show more, it is Voltron to the rotation and Belisle to the pen.
We don't need a lefty who can't get outs. GET RID OF MIKE STANTON. He can't work without drugs.
