Reds 12 (or 15), Yankees 8

Was it 12-8 or 15-8? The scoreboard said 15-8 at the end. But officially it was 12-8.

How so?

The Reds beat the Yankees 12-8 Thursday at Ed Smith Stadium. But the Yankees wanted to play an extra half of inning to get pitcher Steven Jackson work. Chris Dickerson hit a three-run homer in the extra half. That doesn't count in the official box score.

The Reds have won three straight to go to 5-4.

The Reds scored six in the first, four in the fourth and two in the sixth.

"A lot of clutch hitting," Dusty Baker said. "That was good to see."

Edwin Encarnacion had a two-run single in the first and a grand slam in the fourth. he wasn't swinging that well coming in.

"So-so," Baker said. "He's a little behind the other guys. But he's a clutch man. He rises to the occasion."

It was a shutout until Matt Maloney gave up four seventh. Alexander Smit gave up four more in the eighth.

The Reds scored a touchdown in the first. Norris Hopper led off with a hit. Jeff Keppinger singled with the hit-and-run on. Ken Griffey Jr. walked. Adam Dunn went the opposite way to single Hopper in. Edwin Encarnacion got two more in with a single to left. Scott Hatteberg popped out. Joey Votto walked to reload the bases. Javy Valentin smoked one to right that Abreu ran down. Dunn scored to make it 4-0. Andy Green doubled in another run. Hopper singled Votto in.

That was it for New York starter Chien-Ming Wang.

Encarnacion made it 10-0 with a slam in the fourth.

Good outing by Aaron Harang. He gave up a broken-bat double to Johnnny Damon to start the game. Damon went to third on Jose Molina's groundout. But Harang struck out Bobby Abreu and got Jason Giambi to pop up.

Harang's line: 3 IP, 2 hits, 2 strikeouts.

Francisco Cordero pitched a perfect fourth, striking out two. David Weathers and Mike Stanton followed 1-2-3 innings.

Maloney got lit up in the seventh: Abreu led off with home run. Maloney ended up giving up four runs on four hits.

Smit did no better. He gave up a grand slam to Greg Porter in the eighth.

There was a star-studded group around the batting cage before the game. I saw Jim Maloney talking to Yogi Berra. Johnny Bench and Eric Davis were their. Davis looks like he could still play. With age, his waist has expanded all the way to 32 is my guess.

From 87-90' there was no one better than Davis in the game...maybe ever as far as 5-tool outfielders go. Such a shame he had injury problems or we would be putting him in on the first ballot in Cooperstown. He could've been better than Willie Mays. That might sound like hyperbole, but if you saw him in 87' you would know it's true.

Could someone please introduce Eric to Adam Dunn?

John I was just getting into the Reds during Davis' time, so I know about his stats but not much about his relationship with the Reds-Cincinnati during his time here..Can you provide some insight?

davis was at ST last year

I also remember the bright red dress shoes he wore when the cincy mayor threw a ball into the dugout for the 1st pitch, that...was awesome

Davis is just now getting back with the Reds. When he got severely injured diving for a ball in the World Series is when the relationship got bad. I believe Marge would not authorize flying him back to Cincy on a private flight. He felt it would be more comfortable considering his injury.Castellini is doing a great service reaching out to the former players.

Eric Davis is my favorite player of all-time. He was a phenomenon who gave all he had on every play. This is why he got injured so often. There were never any questions about HGH, steroids, etc. The more ED can be involved with the Reds, the better. 44 Magnum forever!!!

How many opposite-field, RBI singles has Dunn got so far this spring? That's the second one I've seen/heard about.

Quick update on another former Red. Sean Casey is 2 for 2 right now w/ a 2 RBI double against LAD.

My personal Davis story: It was around to Christmas in 1989 or '90. I was having dinner with a big group of friends downtown on a Saturday night. Davis was there with a big group also. Bob Quinn, the GM at the time, came in.

Davis' agent told one of my buddies that Davis had just signed a 3-year, $9 million deal. I wasn't on the beat at the time, but I ended up asking Davis and Quinn about it. Quinn said it wasn't a done deal. Davis said they had a agreed. I phoned something into the office. They ended up stripping it across the front page.

The Reds were still saying in the morning that there was no deal. I think they ended up having a press conference around 2 on Sunday. I was one nervous capper until then.

Davis was as good as anyone in the game at the time, and $3 million a year was considered a huge deal.

I remember Dunn had a fair amount of them last year in spring training and early on in regular season. I talked to Joe on the Bannana Phone about them around April but they were gone by May. Threre's a good debate--is it more produtive in the long run to have your slugger shorten up his swing when he's way behind in the count or let him just keep swinging for the fence?

Cordero just pitched one inn, 2 SO no runs no hits

Harang 2 hits in 3 innings 0 BB

Our two most important pitchers pitching good is never a bad thing, haha come on pessimists disagree with me

Girardi must have just developed a small ulcer. One of your projected starters just unraveled this line: 3.2 IP, 10 ER, 1 GS. Love to see the full box score for that outing.

Eric the red had good managers in Rose & Pinella' & gave everything he had for them, but him & Marge could never get along. The million dollar (Bleep) line will go down in cincy sports history as well as sports history. That was an embarassing time for the franchise & the city.

Marge cared about winning & it showed, but was one racist person. That was a main reason why alot of black & latino player's/& 1 manager left on her watch.

Glad to see Eric coming back to reunite with the ballclub.BC did mention when bought the team he wanted to reach out to old fan fav's that have lost contact with the franchise.Good to see he's a man of his word.

Wang was out ofter .2 of an inning. He gave up 6 hits, 6 earned runs ... Rasner gave up the grand slam in the fourth.

My bad, thought Wang was the starter. What you get from getting your game updates from the blog!

Who was the starter that got destroyed?

Thanks for the Wang line, Anonymous. I saw earlier this week that Wang was projected to be the Yanks opening day pitcher. Ouch.

I like that Dunn seems to be finding the middle ground between the boom or bust style hitting. Hope he can maintain it for the season this time.

Kepp is batting .368 in spring training. Rarely strikes out -- the epitome of a #2 hitter.

This guy can hit, and per ESPN defensive stats, is a pretty good defensive SS with good range.

Hey John, When do the Reds make thier first round of cuts? Who do you think might be on the outside looking in? I really hope that they keep Roenicke & Janish around till at least the final cuts. Do you think that those two have a legit shot at making the team?

at 5:01 PM Blogger John Fay said...

There's no certain date for cuts. Janish and Roenicke will make it into late March is my guess.

The guys in trouble early are the young pitchers who aren't getting innings.

at 5:08 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

BOTTOM LINE: Take out Maloney and Smit (both of whom won't be in camp much long, let alone with the big club) and our Redstockings kicked some AL East evil empire today. We knock out their ace in the 1st inning and our probable big league staff of Harang, Cordero, Weathers, (gulp) Stanton and McBeth hold the evil Yankees scoreless. No matter who you are, you gotta like that....Randy Bounds, Chatham, IL

I remember Eric Davis having issues with hitting coach Billy Demars when he was there, Demars wanted to eliminate that showboating way of holding the bat that Davis did and Eric didn't want to listen.

Also Dusty, it looked like there were some big walks in those rallys today!!

at 5:29 PM Blogger REddlegg in Colorado said...

And Dusty wouldn't applied for the job either,IMO.If Marge was still running this team.

This guy Dickerson sounds like a diamond in the ruff.Farm system starting to produce, about time.

I know how good is AGon but Kepp seems to give the Reds that #2 guy they have been missing. I agree Hopper and Kepp give the Reds a dynamic that is so much fun to watch and was part of the big August turn around last year. That can't be ignored as per chance or a one year fluke. I think the Reds have something here. Even putting off Bruce for one year (or Junior's injury) might be worth it.
Also, Javy should be the starting catcher for the veterans and Ross for the rookies. Who was catching during the turn around last year? Right.

My latest starting 8.
Hopper
Kepp
Junior
BP
Dunner
EE
Votto
Javy

This seems to to be the best starting lineup. Bruce and AGon are the wild cards this year.

Good lineup if we could only get Bruce in and move griffey or dunn...

at 7:25 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Kepp rules, A-Gonzo ________

Fill in the blank, whatever, just don't dare start him over Jeff.

CF Patterson
SS Kepp
2B Phillips
RF Junior
LF Dunn
1B Votto
3B EE
C du jour

This is my idea of the best Reds lineup possible unless after 100 ABs Patterson is hitting below .280...yeah, I know Patterson is not a .320 hitter and Hopper might be, but I'll take the steals when he's on, and in GABP Patterson hits 30 HRs this year if he leads off (and gets 700 ABs).

at 7:40 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

So much for Maloney being major league ready, at least not from what he's showin in his few starts. A little concerning since he's 24.

at 8:02 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

anon 7:25 I think the point of a lead off hitter is to actually get on base. Corey Patterson historically has quite a bit of difficulty with that part of the game.

at 8:32 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anon 7:25,

Nice lineup, the only thing I think would be diff is switching BP and Griff, Dusty has mentioned a couple of times that he intends to split JR / Dunner w/ BP.

Monroe,

You may be right, but Patterson would really have to lay an egg in the next couple weeks for Dusty not to put him in the leadoff spot. His mind is pretty much made up. Its unfortunate, but true. Lets just hope hes smarter than us. (He is).. but could still be wrong.

John,

When are Patterson and/or Hairston due in camp? Im sure Dusty will get Patterson into the lineup right away. (After a couple days of BP sesions of course). And what role if any do you see Hairston playing?

at 9:03 PM Blogger John Fay said...

They're in camp. They'll start playing on the 10th or so. Hairston's a candidate for the 25th man.

Denorfia is hitting .067 with the A's this spring. Ouch!

at 9:31 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Denorfia will probably be OK, hes gotta pick it up about 150pts or so but Oakland just doesnt have many major league players on there 40 man right now. I hope he does anyway, since he came up through the farm and all.

As far as the order goes, the 3 hitter is usually your best hitter. So I say hit Phillips third, Dunn fourth, EE fifth and Griffey sixth...now you just extended your whole batting order...and Griffey can't complain about hitting sixth either....my whole order would be:

Bruce
Keppinger
Phillips
Dunn
Encarnacion
Griffey
Votto
Ross/Valentin
(Pitcher)

Thats not too shabby of an order.....

Deno hasn't played for a year so could take him awhile to get back in the groove. Hamilton is batting .538 for the Rangers and EZ just had a good inning. I see Casey had a good day at the office too, now hitting .444. Yeah, I know it is spring training but nice to see the ex-Reds doing well.

at 9:49 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

NJ Reds,

The only problem with your lineup is that until Votto proves he can hit in the bigs, teams will pitch around Griff to get to him.

some of these line-ups people post scare the crap out of me. L/R/L/R people!! clumping the LH hitters together it a real bad idea

patterson/hopper
keppinger
grif
Phillips
Dunn
EE
Votto
C

not everyone is in their ideal spots, but this is best (unless bruce makes the team) keep bruce in AAA so we can add a yr of guaranteed control of him, its the smartest business move for a small-market team. besides he would be platooning and I'd rather see him get more consistent ABs

at 7:33 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Votto has shown he can hit in the bigs. How about this lineup:

Keppinger SS
Votto 1B
B Phillips 2B
Griffey RF
Dunn LF
EE 3B
C du jour
Patterson CF
P

That way when Patterson gets on, he can steal second and third, and we can have the P squeeze him in dozens of times this season? He'd come up with EE or the C on base and hit a few 3-run dingers too. If he's no leadoff hitter, then maybe he's in the 8th spot for those reasons?

at 8:03 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey Ron,
My rotation is still up in the air yet....way too early to decide after Harang and Arroyo....I am not sold on Belisle either...And after that bad inning by Maloney yesterday, that sealed his fate for AAA (which is not a bad thing for this year)

And commenting on that other post that had Patterson batting eight, I can tell you that they didn't get Patterson to hit eighth, they got him to leadoff and play CF. And if they have to drop him from leadoff to the eighth spot he should go to the bench and or be released.....just my opinion....

7:33,

Votto hit well for about a month last season.

Its still not enough to make JR see good pitches, especially with Ross and pitcher coming up after Votto. Theyll put JR on and take their chances w/ Votto, if Votto does anything other than triple or homer, they can work on Ross (Mr .200) and pitcher.

Kevin in Ft Myers

at 8:20 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just feel like youd be taking the bat out of JRs hands alot of times.

at 8:56 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Got your opening day lineup right here...

Hopper CF
Keppinger SS
Jr. RF
EE 3B
Dunn LF
Phillips 2B
Votto 1B
Valentin C
Harang P

And the bench...

Ross
Freel
Castro
Cabrera
Hatteberg

Barring a trade of Hatteberg/Freel, Patterson is not making this team. Not when Freel is getting $3 million this season and Patterson's on a minor league deal. Guaranteed money to Hatteberg and Castro also don't help.

Ross and Gonzalez are both missing too much time to get the start opening day, but both will take over the starting roles by mid April. Cabrera is gone once Alex is off the DL.

Rotation after Harang:

Arroyo
Belisle
Affeldt
Fogg

Pen:

Cordero
Weathers
Burton
Stanton
Mercker
Volquez
Bailey

Dusty's relationship with mercker and Stanton's contract get them both on the squad. Coffey could replace Homer cause of his contrat, but I think they try to let Homer experience some ML success out of the pen while he works on shortening up that curveball.

Homer first to the rotation when one of those rags falter, followed by Volquez. Cueto and Bruce banished to L'ville until WK runs out of other options - I'm guessing it'll be the second half before we see either.

at 9:14 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let's look at what will be . . . we know Keppinger, Phillips, Votto, Hatteberg, Ross, Valentin, Dunn, Griffey, and Gonzalez are definitely on this roster. We know Harang, Arroyo, Weather, Cordero are on the staff. That leaves Belisle, Bailey, Fogg, Affledt, Cueto, Volquez, Merker, Stanton, Coffey, Burton, Bray, Majewski and Coutlangous competing for 8 spots max. That means 5 are gone. That also means Patterson, Freel, Hopper, Bruce, Hairston, Castro, Bako, APhillips, Gil, Janish, and Drew Anderson (hitting .530 at last check) fighting for 4 spots. That's not counting a couple others who are having great springs. The Reds have a lot of depth for a change and I think could still pull off a trade or two if some of these guys keep playing well. I would hope the try to trade because very few of these guys will take an option too AAAA. I think if Hairston makes the club, the Reds are in trouble. I also think Affledt will probably be in the pen even though the Reds need at least one lefty starter. The only mmove I can see is Belisle in the pen and from listening to WLW it sounds like Cueto maybe challenging for the 5th starter spot and Bailey could end up in the pen. But Volquez was awfully good his last outing. Decisions, decisions, and maybe more importantly options, options.

at 9:18 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

We still need a good No. 3. Fogg was a flash in the pan last year - Affledt will not have the stamina. Patterson is going to make this club. Freel or Hopper are gone. The bad thing is Castro and Stanton may make the club due to contracts and should not be on this roster. Not when there are younger and better options.

at 9:20 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

My idea is to package Bako, Hattberg, Stanton, Freel or Hopper, and Castro for a solid pitcher and better catching option. Somebody will need veterans for leadership. Maybe this isn't realistic because teams want young prospects, but this is what needs to happen.

at 9:49 AM Blogger robby said...

Saying the Reds have a lot of depth implies they have a lot of talent. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. What the Reds have ahead of them are some tough choices because there are lots of players of equal ability, most of it average. (And the guys with guaranteed money that probably aren't quite as good as the younger players pushing them will make for some tough choices)

What the Reds have right now is a bunch of young talent likely not quite ready for the majors and a lot of mediocre to average players that will make the team.

WAKE UP YANKEES FIRE GIRARDI! Oh wait, we didn't get Girardi. Hard to imagine what this blog would have done to him yesterday....

Like the debate that continues about Keppinger. Wayne acquires this guy as an "upgrade to the roster" and here you go.

Who was that back up shortstop when Felipe was routinely throwing into the dugout?

Now we have 2 guys that most of us are happy with who play the most important position on the field.

Oh yes, and FIRE Girardi!

that guy sucks
