Big signing, little play

The Reds signing of Juan Duran, the 16-year-old outfielder, was a big deal. A much big deal than I thought Sunday. I knew something was up when they announced it. So I asked Wayne Krivsky about it.

"We signed him and we announced it," Krivsky said.

When I pointed out that in the time I've covered the club the Reds had never announced the signing of a Latin American player, Krivsky allowed that the Reds scouts really liked the kid. Well, turns out they reportedly like the kid to the tune of $2 million.

The reason the Reds announced was that Baseball America was going to write a story about it. Here's a (www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/international-affairs/2008/265719) to the story.

My point here is if Krivsky had been a little more forthcoming with the significance of the the signing, it would have gotten much better play. And some very positive publicity for the club.

This is huge commitment from ownership. Signing bonuses for Latin American players have grown at a scary rate for clubs.

But this one signing says the Reds are going to be players in the Dominican. Krivsky is a much nicer guy that he sounds like in his quotes. But this is one time when his tighti-lipped policy cost his club some good publicity.

who friggin cares how nice your GM is.

personally I prefer him to be the way he is, you can bash him for player signings, but his personality? its exactly how I would be, don't say anything you don't have to. the fans may be mad, but the way he does it is better for the players, and thats his job is to take care of them. its the players job to keep the fans happy.

at 10:49 PM Blogger Stock said...

This is unreal. Wayne Krivsky and the Reds signed what appears to be a great prospect because they interperted the rules correctly when no other major league team could yet you bash them. Most people would praise Reds management for this signing. Instead you are bashing him. It is not Wayne's job to keep the press informed of transactions.

It is Wayne's job to build the farm system that was in shambles when he arrived. He has turned the Reds farm system into one of the best in the majors. How much positive publicity has he received for this. All I ever hear are the idiots who feel we should fire WK.

Maybe instead of slamming WK for signing a player every other team wanted to sign but didn't realize they could we should be commending him on another great signing.

If you want to give the Reds some positive publicity, why don't you write an article in Sunday's paper about the great farm system Wayne has built.

at 10:52 PM Blogger Stock said...

P.S. Don't be surprised if 7 rookies play large positive roles in the success of the Reds this year.

at 11:35 PM Blogger Ankur Varma said...

Stock has it right. This is Cincinnati, not New York or Chicago or Boston where the GMs feel the need to comment about every time they pee or itch their nose. Wayne has done a fine job, taken risks via trades and signings, and right now, the Reds have a bright future. It's up to Baker and the farm system coaches to develop the prospects that Krivsky has piled up. If the Reds don't win in 2008, no big deal; they finally have the parts to make this a contender for years to come. Stop complaining.

at 11:38 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

John,

Are you saying the announcement didn't get much plat because baseballamerica cracked the story and Krivsky announced late?

I'm not sure why the Cicny press didn't give this bigger play? Also why didn't the Cincy press crack the story first?

at 11:42 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nice article on BA. Lots of scouts compare him favorably to other great players.

John's point was that WK could have really sold this to the media because it sounds like a really big deal. This kid is getting some serious signing cash and it shows that the Reds are really doing there homework. This is definitely going to look favorably for the Reds in the Dominican Republic.

Downside to all this is that Duran is light years away from the majors. He can't even play in the Rookie league this year. He doesn't even turn 21 until 2012. Other downside is that he has arms problems, some attribute to growing 6" this year, and only recently started throwing.

Kudos to WK and the Reds Int'l scouting department for doing their homework.

Finally, the Reds begin to get serious about finding the next Jose Reyes or Hanley Ramirez (et al).

Good job Krivsky.

Next thing you know, we'll draft all pitchers in the first through tenth spots, and then put Stanton on a diet!

Who cares if Juan is 4-6 years away? The best clubs plan ahead. It pays off if you get the right kids...good for Juan.

Maybe we can bring back The Big Juan billboards for WLW someday???

There ya go John! Worry a little more about how much positive news the Reds receive. Journalism is going down the tubes and you're doing nothing to fix it.
I'll look past the unbelievable amount of grammatical errors that appear on this blog, and simply make a few suggestions. Don't concern yourself with promoting the team. Just cover it! Screw the Reds. If you want something, go get it.
You and the rest of the suck-up sports journalists in that town have simply become whipping boys for the Reds’ marketing team.
The Reds give you what they want, when they want and you bend over and spit it out in this blog and in the pages of your "news”paper. What motivation does the organization have to work with you when they already have you working FOR it?
This story could have been reported without the Reds releasing it to you. You could have dug deep enough to find it without depending on Mr. Krivsky to tell you about it. That's what good journalists do.
You know what really stinks though? If by some miracle you actually did uproot some meaningful (and god forbid negative) information that Rob Butcher DIDN'T pass along to you, you likely wouldn't report it for fear the team would restrict your already ridiculously restricted access. After all, can’t alienate anyone or you might not get the press releases everyone else gets or the juicy quotes that have been dry and repetitive since the early 90s.
Here's a safe bet. If you never stop playing this silly game of giving the Reds everything and getting nothing in return, the problem is only going to grow.
Eventually, what scant amount of your integrity that remains as a journalist will be washed away, along with all the stories that should have and never will be told properly.
Where have all the good sports journalists gone? The last I can recall from Cincinnati was Jeff Shelman of the The Post (God rest it's soul) who had his priorities in order when he reported on the illegal recruiting practices of the University of Cincinnati men's basketball team. More people like Shelman and less Fays, Rosecrans and the like ... the better.
Stop worrying about promoting the team. Just cover it!

Found this interesting question, check it out its ranking the best Reds players since 1990, very interesting .... maybe Duran will be one of the best in the future!!

what a bunch of d-bags....

get off fay already, he's just making the point that WK could have taken advantage of this opportunity to make an announcement in a way that would have excited the fan base and built momentum towards the season, who knows, maybe even sold a few extra tickets.

and this is part of his job description. marketing is part of everyone's job description in a successful company. in the reds case, this applies to everyone from bobby c down to the players, why do you think they do the reds caravan every year? it's not about being nice, it's about selling your product.

Maybe some of these supposed great prospects will turn out to be good ballplayers..of course maybe some will not..you all dont know. Examples given..Bailey the phenom superstar to be simply aint that yet in the majors..Bruce may not even make the team this spring

a great farm system does not always translate into a great major league team.

Furthermore, even though the Reds are now are paying attention to their farm system, I would not consider it to be great. Other teams are also paying attention to their farm systems

kurv5 many of WKs trades have also turned out to be flops

Too funny. The guy who runs a blog called Reds INSIDER, is complaining the Reds don't GIVE him information. If you're an "insider", doesn't that mean you shouldn't have to depend on anyone to feed you information? If Fay was any journalist at all, instead of an extension of the Reds PR department, he would have reported this without having to learn of it after someone else already wrote the story.
I can't tell you how many times I've seen this blog and others at cincinnati.com link to stories from other newspapers about the teams they are covering. If you're getting scooped by other media not even covering the team full time, you should take down your "insider" designation. Maybe call the blog, "Reds Press Releases". As always, a reporter from the Enquirer (with a lowercase t for a reason) is a day late and a dollar short.

I was very happy with the hiring of Krivsky for the exactly what he's doing right now, creating a great farm system. I liked the hiring because he worked in Minnesota where they had little money for payroll and continually had/have good, competitive teams with a steady flow of quality players from the farm system. This is the only way to do it if you're not going to foolishly overpay for declining veterans. The farm system was in absolute shambles when he arrived and it just gets better and better. Look at how many potentially great players are on the doorstep. Sure it's just potential but before Krivsky the big club was mediocre to bad. Most years they were trying to patch together some sort of laughable pitching staff to hopefully have short term (one season) success. Now, the "problem" is that there are at least 3 tremendous prospects that are just about ready. How many teams can boast that? That's a great GM.

Since when did the window for good publicity for this signing close?

I can't believe you'd choose to complain that a good opportunity for positive PR was bypassed when you yourself could provide that good PR at any time. It's not like Major League Baseball has a 24-hour news cycle for international signings.

That's a cheap shot on Krivsky.

at 8:51 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

According to all the praise heaped on to this kid and the supposed interest of other clubs to sign him, who is not excited about having this kid in the Reds organization? To me, it sounds like the fan base has heard about the signing and has reacted positively. I gotta say, sounds like sour grapes from Fay.

Though great farm systems don’t actually translate into great major league teams, they certainly put the major league team in vastly better position through added depth and potential trading chips. The statement, “even though the Reds are now are paying attention to their farm system, I would not consider it to be great.”, seems a little off base. This might have been true no more than 2 years ago, but huge strides have been taken and multiple scouting organizations that rank the Reds farm system in the top 5 THIS year would disagree.

at 8:52 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Fact: The Reds have a PR problem after not winning since 2000 and repeated promises of we're gearing up for 2003, etc.

Why doesn't Castellini put his folks through mandatory PR classes. This team needs good publicity, yet Krivsky horrible in that regard.

Any information about this guy would be awesome.

I don't understand why these guys aren't included in the draft like the guys born here. It doesn't seem right that the Reds need luck to get a guy like this.

I'm not ticked that BA got the story. That's what they do -- cover scouting and player development. I think Krivksy could have done himslef a favor by being a little moee forthcoming.

And I'm not going to ignore signing. I'll have more on it today.

at 9:10 AM Blogger robby said...

Don't really get the need to bash anyone for what they post. Isn't it easy to express a differing point of view without getting personal? For instance I happen to believe that until Krivsy's work translates into a winning major league team the jury is still out on him. Many of the best players in the minor league system, those closest to being ready for the majors, were not even signed by Krivsky. I don't care about his personality, but I do care about his results which to date are mixed at best. And as Jack pointed out the Reds did lose 92 games last year.

This might be a dense question, but how is WK not PR friendly? From what I understand, he’s cordial with the media (Fay can attest to that) and has made efforts in the off season to promote the Reds organization in the form of the caravan. Isn’t Rob Butcher (sp?) the director of PR? Doesn’t he have a staff? I guess I haven’t seen an instance where WK has said something like, “This team is terrible”, or “If I were a fan, I’m not sure I’d show up to the park.”

If I were trading stocks on Wall Street and someone from the media asked me what commodities I was interested in, I’m not sure how forthright with information I’d be until I’d actually acquired the assets.

I say, let the marketing folks do their jobs, and lets make sure WK does his. That being, giving the marketing folks something they can actually market – a good team. It seems like that is what he’s working on. Time will tell…

Dan Obrien started the replenishment of the Reds farm system by the way..it was not in shambles when Wk arrived

at 9:43 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Of course Obrien started the replenishment. That was his job wasnt it.But Krivsky has expanded other areas of the team which were overlooked in the Obrien time.I mean you can say Jim Bowden did some positives when he was with the Reds. And by the way,I do not support him in any way.I have no problems with Obrien by the way.His hands were pretty much tied by ownership at the time. Those of you who keep bringing up record, expected the Reds to be world beaters the first month Krivsky had the job.And I totally disagree with you about our farm system. Not only were prospects few,and far between. But the way we handled the prospects was questionable. From injuries,to early call ups, our whole mindset has changed.

at 9:55 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not so sure “gushing” is the right word. More like “acknowledging”. Much like BA and Prospectus both acknowledge the Reds farm system as being good.

No one is disputing the records of the past two seasons. The variable that has changed this year is…wait for it…is that the farm system is decent. It doesn’t translate to big league wins, but it certainly gives flexibility to the big league club. – something that was not available in years past.

I think that you nailed it tadd. there's a big difference between building through the farm system (a wise approach considering cincy's financial constraints) or the leatherpants approach of signing garbage, trading away any young prospects for garbage, and allowing the farm system to, well, turn into garbage.

I can't believe the attacks! A guy reports on what's going on, with a comment about how the team should think about how it promotes itself to get more positive press, and this blog goes nuts. Have we slipped that far as a society that a guy can't make a comment without being filleted and skewered.

Class. That's what those of that have verbally abused Mr. Fey don't have. If you don't like his reporting style or grammar, then don't bother reading his blogs.

This country needs more civility and gentlemanly demeanor than bile and hateful disposition and discourse.

Although, I must admit that it is curious that the Reds continue make PR decisions that appear to be counterproductive to the team's promotion goals. Perhaps they were waiting for some other "shoe to drop" before making any hey about this signing. Or, it could be that they don't make a big deal about this because the kid is a kid and there is a long way to go before he can even be battle tested in the minors. And given the propensity for Reds "fans" to jump down their throat at every turn, perhaps they wanted to unwrap the new phenom when they felt the time was right.

All I can say is, I'm glad I don't live in Cincinnati anymore. There is a psychosis among sports fans in that town that I've not seen anywhere else. If the Reds signed another Ty Cobb or Babe Ruth, the fans would scream that Ty doesn't hit enough home runs. They would point out that Babe Ruth strikes out too many times.

My kids love to watch Adam Dunn hit those majestic home runs that seem to want to break orbit and go to Mars. They don't care about how many times he strikes out. They love to watch the energy and spectacular play of Brandon Phillips.

If you put your angst aside for a moment and just watch as a kid would watch the game, you'll see that the Reds are fun to watch.

I know this response will be attacked as well, but at least think about what was said before lashing out irrationally. Is it worth getting this worked up over a kid's game?

this may come to a shock to you and others, but...you're right I (emphasize "I") don't know how decent the farm system is. But, I trust the scouts and talent evaluators that say it is good. Are you saying that all of these reports are wrong? We all understand that some prospects don't pan out, but there's a big difference in saying an organization does not have talent in the minors compared to where the Reds are rated currently by objective observers outside the club.

the same that said Romo was nothing more than a back up quarterback..?

the same that said Brandon Larson would be a hitting machine in the majors? I could go on and on... they ain't my Gods

If you have not noticed, there are serious questions about our" no miss phenom" Homer Bailey and of course we dont even know if Bruce will make the big team.. Scouts, pros and experts are often wrong

There seems to be some improvement in our farm system..how could there not be?

In regards to, "not being fun to watch". I enjoyed watching the Reds last year. I didn't enjoy the outcome of the majority of the games, but that's not to say that I didn't have fun watching/listening to games.

I think that guy's/gal's post was mearly trying to say - baseball is not life, don't let it dictate how you live/feel/work/ect on a day to day basis. if anyone's feeling of self worth is tied to a team's success, good or bad, then you've missed the point of sports in general and have bigger problems than they know.

I rest my case.

My point was exactly as Captain D put it, it's a kid's game played by grown men. That should always be the perspective. Being a fan is about having fun with your team - through bad and good years. As a fan I loved the 1990 World Series, as well as the 1976 and 1977 series'. As a fan I cringed during the years of, dare I say the names, Russ Nixon, Gary Redus, Paul Householder, and Dan Billardello. I hated Pete's departure, but I reveled the day he returned to win the game on a triple and had Riverfront Stadium rocking and rolling again. I cherish the years of Marty and Joe (especially the call of 4192), and was deeply saddened by Joe's death. These are the memories I'll have all of my life (such as Adam Dunn wining a game in the ninth with the bases loaded, two out, and a three-two count - grand slam, who can top that?). I want my kids to have great memories.

The Reds are a chance for us to have a moment in the sun, away from work, away from the cares of life. If we get so wrapped up in this or that, and we allow the failings of the franchise we love to root for get us angry, then we have missed the purpose of being a fan.

And by the way, even when the team was loosing and I was shaking my head at some of the things Jerry Naron and company were doing, I still enjoyed the game, because it is the game I love, and the team I have grown up with. It's the memories and the hope of that next great moment that comes when you least expect it.... "Long drive, Right field... aaannd, THIS ONE BELONGS TO THE REDS!!!! Can you believe it? Can you believe it?" ...That was a great game. What was the record that year? I don't really know, nor do I care. But I'll remember that game as long as I live.

I grew up in the Cincinnati area and have been a Red's fan all of my life. I now live in Texas, but I can't pull myself away from the Reds and Bengals even through all the losing seasons (I was in Germany from 1990 - 1994 and still managed to catch a few games on AFN).
