Jays 8, Reds 4 (Bruce: mild quad strain)

The Reds lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 8-4 Sunday. The good news: Jay Bruce's injury is not serious.

Bruce doubled in two runs in the second. Chris Dickerson tripled with two outs -- the guy runs like his cousin, Eric -- and Paul Bako walked. Bruce hit one the opposite way to left-center. Bruce came out of the game after inning. He suffered a mild left quadriceps strain.

He's day-to-day.

"It's no big deal," Bruce said. "I felt it rounding first. There's no use taking any chances this early in spring. It's not serious at all."

Bronson Arroyo went two perfect innings, throwing 18 pitches. He threw more in the bullpen to try to get a little bit sore. Arroyo was up all night throwing up.

Johnny Cueto also had the flu. He's looked pretty good until he gave up back-to-back, two-out singles in the fourth. The second one scored a run. His line: 2 IP, 4 hits, 1 runs, no walks, 2 strikeouts.

"His stuff was electric," Dusty Baker said. "And he wasn't even feeling good. He'll get better."

The Jays took the lead when Buck Coats took Mike Stanton out to right-center for the two-run homer. It wasn't a good day for veteran relievers: David Weathers and Kent Mercker each gave up two runs, Francisco Cordero gave up one. That made it 8-4.

"They're older guys," Baker said. "It takes them longer to get ready. They depend on location and sharpness."

The Reds scored unearned runs in the sixth and eighth.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Need more details! Is it a cramp? Pull muscle? Broken leg? Hopefully nothing serious

at 1:32 PM Blogger Ryan said...

Marty pretty much blew it off as nothing major at all. Sounds like it's more precautionary than anything. Hey, we have a million outfielders on the bench; might as well use em if someone isn't feeling 100%.

I'm sure its just precautionary. Sounds like he is hitting the ball pretty well though which is what is important. A couple days off will get him back into action.

John we are listening to the game ..it brings back the sweet memories of summer.cant wait for the real games to begin..Did you hear Marty and Jeff call Keppinger and Hatteburg the Reds two most professional hitters?

at 1:40 PM Blogger Max said...

Hey John, doesn't it seem that Chris Dickerson and Drew Stubbs are very similar type prospects? (Great field, great athlete, great speed, high K-rate)

Can anyone fill me in on Drew Anderson...seems like tghis guys is hitting alot and I never heard anything about him...I actually thought his last name was atypo and they were actually referring to Drew Stubbs....

there's actually 2 drew andersons on the squad right now...one's an outfielder, the other's a utility guy who came out of Ohio St.

Looks like Stanton is already in mid-season form. Giving up homers and the lead.

I am so excited. I just ordered my number 29 Stanton jersey.

Let me be the first to say that Stanton SUCKS

at 2:02 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The first today, here, that is...

at 2:03 PM Blogger jdeezman said...

LOL!

At least Stanton is consistent.

at 2:04 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let me bring back up my suggestion from the other day.

I am going to pass around a hat for donations. If we raise enough money, maybe we can afford to cut Stanton.

at 2:08 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I remember jdeezman telling all of us how wonderful all the reds relievers would be this year..oh well..its only preseason lets hope hes correct

at 2:09 PM Blogger jdeezman said...

I can't donate much, but I will definitely contribute to such a worthy cause letstalkreds!

at 2:12 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

2 things:

1. Is Drew Stubbs in camp?

2. Can I get that donation as a tax write-off?

$3.5 million is a lot to throw away. But so are the 5-10 games the guy is going to blow this season if they don't cut him now.

Stanton, Weathers, Majewski, Coffey, Coutlangus

= five reasons why the Pirates will finish the season with a better record than the Reds.

Pitching is supposed to be ahead of hitting early in spring.

So just wait until the hitters catch up!

at 2:27 PM Blogger jdeezman said...

Anon @ 2:23... that's exactly the reason that most of the guys you mentioned should be ex-major leaguers.

at 2:29 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

anon 2:23 get a clue. Weathers is fine and of the 5 you listed at least 2 of them won't even be on the 25 man roster. Wake up

at 2:31 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

How about this, instead of donating money to offset Stanton's salary we instead pledge to purchase additional game tickets. This will give us something in return and potentially the team will make more money with consessions and the like. I'll even start a marketing campaign to get others to purchase tickets in my area and get a group or two to make group reservations.

All for a good cause, without steroids to use any longer Stanton will likely be worse than last year... now that's just scary.

at 2:34 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Weathers is a good pen pitchers. Go look at the numbers, he saved 33 out of 37...pretty good if you ask me. Everyone else yeah should not be pitching.

at 2:39 PM Blogger Dave from Louisville said...

Either we need to cut Stantroids, or he needs to go talk to his trainer in New York to get some "advice."

at 2:48 PM Blogger Jack in Blue Ash said...

we think it is way too premature to be judging our pitching..perhaps it would be best to wait a couple of weeks

at 2:50 PM Blogger jdeezman said...

Dave, I think Stanton has to have pictures of Krivsky and Bowden in some kind of compromising position... money by itself is not enough to keep him around.

at 2:52 PM Blogger Ol' Timey Redsfan said...

Watching the game on Blue Jays TV on MLB.com, though they seem more interested in stupid things like who the cutes guy is. Boy if you think our guys are bad, they spent the whole half ininng while the
Reds where batting, teaching us how some over weight announcer wants to pitch. Then they come back and say 1,2,3. But between the bull I did see Votto hit a ringing double. Joey V can hit there is no doubt he should be the opening day first baseman.

is not Buck Coats that player the Reds had last year that could not hit?

unfortunately for ole buck, he didn't have the luxury of facing that steaming pile of pork fat that is mike stanton last year.

here's hoping mercker has a more outings like this, it's the only way dusty doesn't bring him north, and even that may not be enough. not that it would likely be any worse than craplangus or bray, though i'd be willing to bet bray stays for "extended spring training" till August or so anyway with his litany of strains and other assorted minor injuries.

i fear we're gonna be looking at a roster full of has-beens until the club is well out of the race in mid july while the young talent languishes in l'ville, while their value in the trade market continues to decline...

at 3:18 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

steaming pile of pork fat!!! great description of Stanton.

Weathers isn't much less steamier either.

Weathers had a good run for much of last year but he's really nothing to get excited about.

Only 2 of 5 won't be on the roster? That's a good start.

I'll bet anyone here that you will NEVER see the David Weathers in a World Series wearing a Reds uniform as a player.

Who knows, maybe he'll become a pitching coach (cough cough cough cough cough) on the Red Sox some day....

Reds pitching is AWFUL

at 3:24 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I dont know about anyone else, but I am happy with the Reds record so far, (1-3). It shows Dusty is trying to get looks at alot of players, no matter what the outcome of the games. Also notice the lack of play for guys he knows will start.

Im really looking forward to a couple weeks from now when we are seeing the real starters playing 7 or 8 innings and the pitchers going 5 or 6.

I feel pretty good about how hes doing things, (starting guys he doesnt know, instead of bringing them in for an at bat or two later in games).

I dont think there will be any suprises in the 25 man roster, but Dusty may suprise us opening day . Particularly when in comes to CF and rotation.

Cueto is turning into the real thing. I expect him to be a pitcher for the Reds in some fashion. Since April probably warrant holding a 5th starter here might be the pitchers the Reds go north with. This is based on some thing Dusty has said.
SP
Harang
Arroyo
Affeldt
Fogg

LR (and the spot 5th starter)
Cueto and Bailey
MR
Righty: Burton, Weathers, Roenicke
Lefty: Mercker, Cooter
9th
Cordero

That gives the Reds 12 pitchers until May where a 5th starter will probably be I.D. by then.

Roenicke, if he keeps firing like he is, should replace Coffey. Cooter is slightly better than Stanton.

John,
Do you think the Reds would keep Stanton at AAA instead of releasing him?

"i fear we're gonna be looking at a roster full of has-beens until the club is well out of the race in mid july while the young talent languishes in l'ville, while their value in the trade market continues to decline..."

I'm more than happy for the youngsters to start in Louisville. Don't want ANY of them in the bigs until they're ready to play and stay.

Why? Well, look at y'all's favorite whipping boy: Adam Dunn. Prime example of someone rushed to the bigs. When he was promoted in 2001, he had all of 350 at-bats in the minor leagues above A-ball. 140 ABs at AA, and 210 ABs at AAA.

But the Reds sucked, Bowden was anxious to show there was a brighter future in Cincy, so he threw the fans a bone and brought the next big thing up to the bigs. Promoting him too early, combined with making him play for a manager who would bat him leadoff one day and seventh the next, probably set Dunn's development as a hitter back about three years.

When Bruce makes the major league roster, I want him to be ready to play every day and able to succeed at this level, and I want the Reds to have a real good idea where he's going to hit in the lineup. The regular season isn't an experiment, and it's not where guys learn on the job, regardless of how the team is doing as a whole. It doesn't do the Reds or Bruce any good to jerk him like a yo-yo like they did with Dunn or expect him to do things he's not ready to do.

Same goes for the young pitchers Bailey and Cueto. If they aint ready, they aint ready. Period. Let them learn to pitch and get some confidence at AAA rather than throwing them in the major league fire and allowing them to get lit up every 5 days. Doesn't do the team or them any good.

Good things are on the horizon, but if it doesn't happen in '08, it will be worth the wait for '09.

That's why the Affeldt and Fogg signings were good. Why we should have gotten Colon or Garcia as well. If the kids aren't good enough to beat those guys in spring training for a roster spot, they don't belong in the bigs to begin with. Not yet, anyway. In that case, Affeldt and Fogg are no worse than any other schmuck the Reds might trot out there to take one for the team once a week. They're also cheap, so when the time comes for the kids to come up, we're not eating a lot of salary to cut them loose.

at 4:20 PM Blogger HoosierVirg said...

Dqvid, great minds run in the same circle, lol, I have said the very same thing about Dunner ever since they brought him up. He really wasn't quite ready but the fans needed to think there was a light at the end of the tunnel and that that light wasn't a train. I agree, don't rush these guys, if they belong up here they will show it in spring training, if they don't show it send them back down, almost all of them have options which is great for the Reds.

Virg,
How can you possibly say that Dunn wasn't ready when they brought him up?

He hit 19 home runs and batted a very respectable .262 in 244 ABs in his first season.

at 4:37 PM Blogger Cheviot Sports Authority said...

If Jay Bruce has a good spring, he needs to be here now and in the starting line-up. If he falters then send him back. He has nothing more to prove at the minor league level.

"Virg,

...And then the scouting report got out on him. Pitchers adjusted, he didn't. One day he's batting leadoff and is supposed to get on base, even if that means taking a walk. The next day, he's hitting cleanup and isn't supposed to be taking walks, he's supposed to be clobbering the stitches off the ball.

It's a lot of adjustments for a kid to make, especially since the majority of his professional at-bats were at A-ball, where scouting reports are irrelevant because most pitchers only have one or two pitches they can throw, anyway.

Stanton was horrible, so was Weathers. Get ready Fans this is the same Stuff from last year. This team has not improved at all. Wasted money on Cordero, and DUsty as well. Naron or Pete M could manage this team just as well.

If Jay Bruce were a Bengal this would be a season ending injury.

at 6:21 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

If Jay Bruce were a Bengal he'd be giving alcohol to 18 year old girls in his hotel room...but I digress.

The Reds are 2-3. Their record has nothing to do with whether Dusty is getting good looks at players.

Hearing Marty and Cowboy drool over how good Mercker would be in the locker room was disgusting. Yeah, we need another "great guy" in the clubhouse while we go .400 again and again and again. Please. Can we find some divisive individualistic selfish jerk starters who can win 20 games in a season?

I just can't believe how loopy this city gets over "our kind of guys" (translation: hicks).

This team's pitching stinks. Mercker is not only over the hill he's down the street and around the corner and, well, you get the picture.

The young guys deserve to be given their shots because other than that long-odds upside we have the worst team in the Central right now.

Any reason Mike Lincoln didn't pitch today?

As long as Kremcheck doesn't use the words "day to day," then Bruce should only miss a couple games. Otherwise, it could be 2 months.

at 8:41 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dunn wasn't brought up too early. He hit 19 home runs and put up a .900+ OPS in his rookie season. It was the managers and coaches who told him not to be so selective who screwed him up.

Reds pitching is AWFUL? REDS BULLEN ARE HORRIBLE. I watched this game in the stadium. I really hate our HORRIBLE bullpen. I saw Stanton getting back home sheepishly. Get rid of him. WE DONT NEED HIM ANY MORE.

I actually think Mercker would be good coming out of the pen if he gets healthy.

I would question whether the Reds are serious about winning though if Stanton and Majewski are on the team.

I really want to see Majewski succeed, but with all the other arms they have now I don't know how he'd make the team.

only 5 games so far

everybody, take a valium or sumthin;

you opinionated fools want the Reds to cut everybody and their sister

Spring training is to get ready. Veteran managers like Baker like to give the marginal players lots of looks, let them make or break themselves. Ws and Ls mean absolutely nothihg. The Reds have a large mix in camp. That;s a good thing. It means they want to upgrade everywhere.

I think Dusty already knows who he likes, and who he wants. Right now he needs to see who the best prospects are, and how to make up AAA louisville, too. Relax. Let it all play out. This team will be still trying to jell into May.
