Ross update, lineups, schedule

Spoke to David Ross about his bad back this morning.

"It's definitely been a lot longer than I thought," he said. "I thought it would be two, three days. It's worse than I realized. We want to get it completely better. It will feel good and then as soon as I hit or throw I feel it."

The Reds are convinced the problem is muscular in nature.

There are two catchers listed in the lineup for the 7:05 game.

I guess Ross is going to play himself out of a starting job by not playing. I know he's hurt but he also didn't light the world on fire last season. John do you think the Reds might bring someone else in since Dusty likes to see competition at key positions.

Catcher is one position that I think the Reds need to do a better job of developing at the minor league level. Currently they don't even have a catcher the is even close to being ready to come up. I'm not asking for another Bench but good googly god get us someone who can play defense and hit .275.

Am I asking to much?

That's why they drafted Devin Mesoraco in the first round last year. Pat Kelly, his first manager, was really impressed with Mesoraco.

Craig Tatum is also prospect. He put up good numbers at Sarasota last yar (.321) but fell off at Chattanooga (.231).

I'm probably the only one out there but I don't mind Ross' GG caliber defense and 20+Hrs from our 8 spot over some guy like Javy who will bat .270 and play avg defense at best. Hell there are catchers all around the league that put up less homers and a lot worse defense. Guys like Matheny and ausmus started in this league forever based purely on defense and no stick. At least the Reds get some power from Ross along with his good defense. I swear no one in Cincy will be happy until their is a an AS at every position. It's not going to happen people, get over it! The Reds have a lot of young pitchers who have had control problems in the past. We need a good defensive catcher in there to help them. Not an offensive only catcher who won't throw out any runners or block wild pitches.

The Reds also drafted an eighteen year old Canadian catcher that is supposed have intriguing tools. Is there any word on how Mesoraco is looking in minor league camp?

Nagging back problems are troubling but Ross is fortunate to not have someone to take his spot unless they make a trade. Valentin would probably get the full platoon starts for now with maybe Hanigan on the other side. I don't want them to carry Bako (Castro in a crouch).

Ross' D is solid, definitely better than Javy behind the plate, but also definitely NOT gold glove caliber.

I think he'd be a decent back half of a catcher platoon, but not a #1. Back problems for a catcher are not good news either, I imagine this will linger thorughout the season.

Didn't Mesorasco get hurt shortly after the Reds drafted him?

John,

Do you know what WLW is planning on radio this year when Thom and Jeff are on TV or will they not team up on TV this year always leaving one for radio? Last year they had Steve Stewart or Joe available to fill in on TV or radio when needed, do they have someone else this year or will Chris & George do more games?

Also, I was disappointed to see Steve go, I was hoping they would have him replace Grande on the TV.

arroyo made a comment that he liked ross..this has now been embellished to the point that fans have Ross being a superior defensive catcher and all the pitchers love him..not true

you all have created this David Ross Gold Glove catcher creature..he aint that

Frankly they both are not very good and a liability to this team

12.52- I'm glad in your personal opinion based on your expertise you feel like he is not close to Gold Glove caliber, But just to humor myself I looked at the GG winners from last year compared to Ross:

Ross .993 FP 5 errors 6 pass balls 50 assists

Pudge .993 FP 6 errors 7 pass balls 50 assists

Martin .988 14 Errors 5 PB 85 assists

I guess you are right.....

How about trading Freel for Brandon Inge, whom the Tigers want to move? Inge came up as a catcher and is slated to back up Pudge this year. He can play infield and outfield too.

Ross has a good arm and calls the games well. Those are his defensive skills. I have been fairly unimpressed with his def otherwise, he is terrible at blocking balls and thats something he really needs to work at, he tries to glove the ball on a one hop way too often.

that being said catching is a pretty thin position in the majors. if ross could get his avg to .250 he's a better option than some other teams. we have 2 guys that are servicable starters we should be happy since not a lot of teams can say that

I keep hearing Ross "calls games wel"

what games where those? ..the darn team finished 72-90 and our pitchers looked like crud.. aside from Harang

I'm pretty sure you need to shoulder most of the games on the pitchers Jack/Julie. There is only so much that Ross can do, and honestly I think he does a adequate job defensively. Can you remember any games that Ross lost for the Reds defensively... probably not.

Now if he could just get his offense in gear...

Probably the games where he opponents din't but a whole bunch of runs up is the games he called well.

Oh my! I thought I was done weighing in on this topic. It is amazing how the same topics go on and on, day after day. David Ross is an adequate number 2 catcher, nothing more. One can use statistics to argue otherwise, but I know what I see day in and day out. He is a little bit better than an average defensive catcher and a below average offensive player. He does not block the plate particualry well, is not real smooth on foul pops and allows more passed balls than he should. A great defensive catcher that makes contact but still hits in the low 200's is acceptable. David Ross does not fit thtat description.

Robby, is 6 passed balls a lot?

at 3:25 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

why do the reds fans defend mediocore players like ryan freel and david ross

at 4:37 PM Blogger robby said...

6 represents the number of pitches that got by Ross that were charged as passed balls. That does not include pitches that maybe should have been blocked by Ross that were scored as wild pitches. I have seen enough of him to know he is not the best at getting in front of pitches that are in the dirt. I find it incredible anyone would want to argue David Ross is anything more than a solid back-up catcher. Just for arguments sake, Ross had 6 passed balls in 717 innings. Martin with the Dodgers had 5 in 1254 innings and Rodriguez had 7 in 1054 innings, so Ross does not compare favorably with the two best defensive catchers.
