Bruce clears things up with Dusty

Jay Bruce visited with Dusty Baker to clear things up today. Bruce wanted his manager to know he hasn't had leg "problems."

"As far as professional baseball, I missed three or four games at the end of the year with a hamstring," he said. "I played 133 games last year. In Dayton (in 2006), I missed one game."

He missed the game in Dayton with a quad problem, but it was a bruise that was the result of breaking a bat over his knee leg.

"That was stupid thing to do," Bruce said. "We were messing around. I haven't had any problems with my legs"

Bruce was able to jog today for the first time since mildly straining his left quad Sunday.

"It's much better," he said. "I can do everything but a full-out sprint."

Bruce was not concerned about the how the addition of Corey Patterson will affect him.

"He's been in the big leagues for eight years," Bruce said. "So he's a good player. But we've had competition in camp all along. I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing."

That's good to hear about Bruce. There is no doubt that all of these players are competitors.

I wonder if Cliff Lee is still on the block? It would sure clear alot of questions up if we had a Cliff Lee.

Harang
Arroyo
Cliff Lee
Fogg
Bailey, Cueto, Addfelt

That wouldn't be bad at all.

I was hoping they'd look at Lee this offseason too. Tribe could certainly use an upgrade in LF, wonder if they shopped Hamilton for Lee before doing the deal for Voltron.

Begs the question of whether or not this signing was done with something like a Cliff Lee swap in mind doesn't it? Norris Hopper, or Freel would both be upgrades for the Tribe, although many don't consider them being everyday players. It will be interesting seeing what plays out with the Reds Outfield situation.

I think the key thing we need to keep in mind is that Patterson and the other guy were only signed to minor league deals. At this point to me its nothing but a move to have enough bodies in camp because of the flu epidemic going on then anything. Both would have to have a lights out smoking hot spring to move ahead of the already log jammed pecking order on the Reds. Neither to me seemed poised to be on the roster come opening day.

why the cliff Lee lovefest?

As a Reds fan from the great state of Arkansas, I am still holding out hope that the Reds will trade for our states very own, Cliff Lee. He is a good pitcher who I think would really help the Reds.

One thing for certain: whatever plays out, half will still think WK is an idiot. It is amazing how many jail house GM's post here.

I would be shocked if Patterson isn't on the roster when they head north

How is Richie Gardner looking? It wasn't too long ago that he was baseball america's top 100 prospects...I know he got injured...just wondering how he was looking.

I just cannot get myself to want bringing in an average pitcher like Lee when we have the likes of Cueto, Vosquez, and Maloney waiting in the wings that to me are an upgrade over Lee. Unless all three of these falter then I don't see the Reds going after Lee when they could get someone such as Joe Blanton with those three pieces who is also better.

Voltron.....LOL. that was quality. You get one hot steamy cup of awesomesauce on meh!@@@@

at 1:08 PM Blogger Will T. said...

If you take away Lee's season last year (he fought through injuries), and still consider him an average pitcher, what do you think Blanton is? Lee was one of the top 5 Pitchers in the American League two years ago. Not to mention he is a lefty. That is the reason the Reds should bring him in. I am sure that he is signed for a reasonable amount, and he would not command the big prospects that the Athletics would want for Blanton. The Indians have enough good young pitching as it is. Lee is better than Fogg, better than Affeldt, and equal to Arroyo. Why not trade for him when everyone seems to be enamoured with trading for Blanton.

Lee seemed to have fallen out of favor in Cleveland last year due to an attitude problem, injury, sucking, etc. But he was pretty good 2 years ago, seems like a buy low type who could have provided us with a solid LH arm in the rotation.

John, any truth to the rumor that MLB.com is trying to end live game blogging because it competes with their gamecast? I really hope not. It's good to get the inside information from someone familiar with the organization rather than some anonymous guy at MLB.com...

Richie Gardner looked good in his inning yesterday. I don't see him making the club, but he could be an option down the road. He was pretty good before he got hurt and started well last year.

And thank you all for behaving in your posts. It works much better for all involved this way.

I'm not saying we should go after Blanton. I'm just against trading away valuable assets who have the potential to out last and be much better than Lee to get him. To me Blanton is better and has more of an upside to me than Lee has because of his age and would be more worth doing it if you were so inclined to do so. I might trade Belisle straight up for Lee but not give away the young prospects to get him.

MJ,
I agree with you on Cliff Lee. He doesn't do anything for me either. If they want another lefty, maybe Jonathan Sanchez from SF is a possibility. Blanton would still be nice to have if the price were right. I think one of our young trio of pitchers (Bailey, Cueto or Volquez) will have a big year. By big, I'm talking 13 or 14 wins.

John.......there is no mlb radio today..could you blog the play by play.........pleaseeeeeeeeeee

at 1:23 PM Blogger John Fay said...

We are not allowed to blog play-by-play. This is a big issue right now. The NCAA took a writer from Louisville's credential and escorted him out for blogging live for an NCAA baseball game.

It's really hard to define what is play-by-play. I can tell Belisle pitched a 1-2-3 first today. But if I gave a pitch-by-pitch or batter-by-batter account, they might take acception. It's something that will be decided by the courts.

Belisle did pitch a 1-2-3 first, by the way.

at 1:31 PM Blogger Osogato said...

That is outrageous. So, we're supposed to accept that there is no way for us to know what is happening in the game? MLB.com doesn't have any audio or video, yet they still won't allow live blogging?! Greedy A-holes! I don't see how it takes anything away from them.

I don't think anyone is really Jumping on the Cliff Lee boat. To me the reason a move like that works is for the same reason a move like affeldt, fogg, patterson etc... works. The Reds have a great future as far a pitching goes (bailey, cueto, maloney, volquez etc..) as well as a pretty bright future from the standpoint of Bruce and Votto. But that's exactly what it is, a future if we trade more than one of these guys away for someone like Blanton while the short term production might be decent it would sacrifice the long term production. A guy like Lee fills in a gap until these guys are ready, while still giving the Reds a pretty good chance of making a run for the playoff in the weak central division. I don't think many can argue with that.

The game is great, MLB the organization ruining the perfection of the game .... they can suck it

at 1:38 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

John What am I missing? How can live blogging be competition when mlb is NOT broadcasting the game?

at 1:38 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Lee is the kind of guy you try to sign if he's a free agent but you don't go giving up potential aces of the future in a trade to acquire. He's just not the answer for the Reds if you ask me at the moment. Its too early to jump the gun yet. Nothing from John or any of the other beat reporters covering the Reds this Spring have given any indication that the Reds are unhappy with the arms they have now in regards to starters. If you ask me they would more likely need to go after a middle reliever than make another move.

3-0 Tribe in the second

Still waiting on a reason to believe Matt Belisle can be a productive member of this rotation.

at 1:42 PM Blogger Will T. said...

I don't know who in here knows this, but you can go to cincinnatireds.com and look at a live boxscore. It doesn't show play by play, but at least you can get stats.

at 1:44 PM Blogger Osogato said...

John, I'm a bit confused. Is this an MLB decision? You mentioned a blogger was stripped of his credentials for blogging an NCAA game. So, is this an FCC decision, or did all the sports industries get together to decide this? I'm just trying to figure out who to send an angry letter to.

at 1:52 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

As far as starters go I think we're ok. You still look to improve if you can if the price is right but we don't need to deal just to deal right now. There is no current urgency to add another starter. We also have the luxury if Affeldt, Belishe, and Fogg pan out decently to put Bailey, Cueto, Vosquez, or Maloney in the pen to help there. To me that is still where we're the most weak in regards to pitching. Cordero and Weathers have the 8th and 9th but its long to middle relief where we seem to need the most help. If you want to make a deal for someone IMHO start there.

at 1:53 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

sounds like belisle is getting crushed

at 2:03 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'd trade Belisle for Lee straight up but not likely Cleveland would agree to such a deal with the salary differences. One thing to keep in mind is he's looked pretty decent up till this point. Everyone has a bad outing from time to time.

I am concerned that Baker is a hard head. How many center fielders do we need? Adding Patterson to the mix is a mistake. We gave up Hamilton because Burce was supposed to be ready. I don't get it. Hopper showed he could play every day ...against righties and lefties. Freel is also more than capable when healthy.

It seems that Keppinger is ignored as well. Someone get Dusty a stat book from last season. Someone show him what Hopper and Keppinger did at the top of the order.

The following would be my opening day line up.

Hopper CF
Keppinger SS
Griffey RF (prefer bat 5th)
Phillips 2B (prefer bat 3rd)
Dunn Lf (prefer bat 4th)
Encarncion 3B
Voto 1B
The Catcher

Play Bruce a few times a week spelling Hopper.. Griffey ...ease him in...keep him sharp so when Griffey goes down...he is ready.

Send Patterson packing... along with Hairston...what were they thinking!

John,

Has any news organization decided to fight the anti-play by play rules on grounds of 1st Amendment and anti-trust (I know MLB has an exemption) grounds? I know that fantasy leagues won a major battle last year in the courts and it seems as if this would fall in the same realm. Though I'm sure MLB would argue copyright protections. It will be interesting how they stop it once the next generation of bloggers use their Iphones and other mobile devices to report play by play of games including video.

I don't think this is over. It will be decided in court.

Looking down the road...if Patterson works out, I'd be in favor of trading Junior (after his 600th, of course) and putting Bruce in right.

at 12:09 PM Blogger reaganspad said...

Adding Patterson is kind of like when we added Guillen. We had uber Austin Kearns in right already.

Kearns never really responded to the challenge and took the position. Guillen ended up be Harrang.

This move is a no brainer
