Twins 8, Reds 6

Ramon Ramirez gave up two-run homer in the ninth to blow the save. Marcus McBeth gave up a two-run homer in the 10th to blow the game, and the Reds lost 8-6 to the Twins after leading 6-4 going into the ninth.

"Their young guys beat our young guys," Dusty Baker said. "They've got the good arms. They couldn't close it out. What hurt Marcus is the walk before the home run."

Reds had retaken the lead in the eighth on Andy Green's three-run homer. Green's a UK grad. He played last year in Japan. He had a monster year in Triple-A in 2005. He hit .343, led Pacific Coast League in run (125), hits (182), doubles (46) triples (13). However, he hit .199 in 226 at-bats with Arizona over parts of three seasons.

Reds scored one in the first. With out, Norris Hopper and Ken Griffey walked. Adam Dunn singled them in Hopper. Jeff Keppinger hit into a 4-6-3 DP.

Twins tied it in the first. Jemery Affelt walked Carlos Gomez. He moved up on a groundout, stole third and scored on a groundball.

Affledt pitched a scoreless second.

Reds added two in the third. Double from Andy Phillips, Chris Dickerson K'd. Hopper singled. Griffey hit a double play ball, that was booted momentarily. Phillips scored. Dunn with another RBI single -- this one to center, last one was to left.

Affeldt pitched a perfect third. His line, assuming he's done: 3 IP, 1 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 1 strikeouts. I've got him in the rotation. Just kidding, it's waaaaaaaaaaay too early to make those kind of calls.

Richie Gardner pitched a scoreless fourth.

Scott Sauerbeck had another awful outing: 1 IP, 3 hits, 3 earned runs, 2 walks.

Affeldt used his change-up quite a bit.

"It was my most effective pitch," he said. "That's what I'm going to go home smiling about. I really, really happy with it."

Affeldt is trying to get the changeup back. It would give him a third pitch to go with his plus-fastball and curveball.

He wasn't happy about the leadoff walk. "Especially to that guy (Carlos Gomez)," he said. "I never came set in the first and still stole off me."

John,

I have read in one of Pauls blogs that Baker referred to Homer as being "bush". Is there any truth in this statement?

(This doesn't pertain to this particular topic, but I'd still like to know)

Thanks

Dusty referred to him as "Homer Bush" - a former Yankee infielder. It was no big deal, he merely misspoke.

at 1:52 PM Blogger John Fay said...

He didn't refer Homer as being "bush." He referred to Homer as as Homer Bush. The Yankees had a player by that name. It was a slip of the tongue.

Thanks for clearing that up. The way it read it seemed like he was calling him "bush".

Anyone else listening to these crappy Twins announcers. According to them the Reds have no "Gold Glove" candidates or anyone close. I think BP would have something to ay about that. Then they talked about all the starting pitching issues, said Harang would be a #3 at best for good teams and never mentioned any of the young arms at all. I just thought it was funny.....

at 2:28 PM Blogger Ol' Timey Redsfan said...

I heard that too, just goes to show that if it's not their team, then announcers don't know anything other than what the stats say. I think
B.P. should have won the golden glove last year.

I really chaffed at their remarks too. Brandon Phillips only led the league in fielding percentage for second basemen. Harang has only been around the top of the league in several pitching categories.

There are very few non-Red's commentators that I like (Radio and Television). While they seem to catch alot of grief, at least Welsh and Grande don't talk down on the opposing team. And Welsh has the best mustache in baseball history.

Let everyone think that way. So in the end, we will sneek up on everyone because they are going to underestimate us. It will be all that much sweeter when we make the playoffs.

I want to pop my ear drums every time the Red's are playing the Cub bears and the game is only on WGN. They're in-game broadcasters are atrocious.

Hey John just wondering if from what you have seen is Dusty Baker more fundamental oriented then Jerry Narron during spring training? Also how does LHP Danny Herrera look?

at 3:05 PM Blogger BATSFAN said...

Im good about keeping my cool during spring traning but this is looking like were in the season we get a lead and its gone real quick to the bullpen, whats going on. Same team same problem!

at 3:14 PM Blogger John Fay said...

Baker seems to be quicker to bring lapses to player's attention.

Herrera is not in big league camp.

Nice note John on Dunn going to left and center on his 2 RBI singles. I am excited for him this year to punish the fools that shift on him.

Make em pay Dunner

John, hows the weather down thre today?

at 3:50 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

If Dunn continues to go the other way and put the ball in play when the shift is on he will add 25 points to his average and will drive in 140 runs......

We blew the lead again, this is getting silly!

This act of Sauerbeck's is getting old. I know it early in spring but he not showing me anything. Sounds like Affelt is making good progress. When will we see Bray?

The Bullpen needs to throw more strikes!

The fact that so many runs are allowed in the later innings by inferior pitching makes a teams early spring training record irrelevant.

The Reds seem to be doing really well from a pitching perspective in those first 4-5 innings. After that, all bets are off right now.

at 4:31 PM Blogger John Fay said...

It';s springt training, folks. The Reds have had a winning record each of the last four springs. Todd Coffey had a 0.84 ERA last spring and Victor Santos was better than him.

Stats and records mean little until April.

at 4:48 PM Blogger Ol' Timey Redsfan said...

I agree with John about stats and scores don't mean much, but you hate to see pitchers pitching from behind, espeicially if they are trying to impress you and make the team. Ball 1 and ball 2 counts and lead off walks, won't cut the mustard anytime.

Stat's are the most mis-leading information in baseball. If you watch or listen to a game then you will really understand what's really going on.

Stat's only tell 1/2 the story & I think they are overrated. That being said, baseball is a game of stats, always has been & always will be.

Jack,The bungles frustrate me & the whole city get's used by them. The reds have championships & a legacy that is great in history & lore. Yea, they haven't done anything lately, but the ownership cares & is willing to take accountability for it's mistakes.BC is a much better owner than Mike Clown. The reds are trying to be successful by winning, the bungles are being successful by using it's fan's.BIg difference.1 playoff game in 17 years, compared to the reds playoff history cannot even be debated.Plus, the one playoff game was a total meltdown.Go figure.

Cincy relies on the reds more than ever.I was just there (in cincy) for 10 days. The whole town is in a funk.It needs a winner to help the moral of the city & the economy.

The last time I checked, spring training is still where jobs are won or lost. If performance doesn't matter, then how do they decide who gets the job?

at 5:39 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The point trying to be made is that individual performance determines who makes the team but individuals pitching in games do not dictate how the season for the team goes. Just because Sauerbeck and these other guys give up runs in relief doesn't mean the bullpen will blow again this year.

at 5:39 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Even though it irks me that the Reds blew the lead, and the game, at this point I'm not too concerned about it. I also would like to point out that these are the types of games we were winning last year at this time. The teams record was great at the bigginning of spring training ... we continually got behind, but then came back at the end of games to win. Rememeber the Unstoppables? As cuts were made and it got closer to April however, their record got worse -- a predictor of how the first couple months of the season. I'm interested in seeing what happens in 2 weeks.

I didn't listen to the game. Were Drew M. Anderson and Drew T. Anderson in the outfield at the same time?

Baseball is a game of listening to Marty on the radio. Baseball is a game to be enjoyed on a warm summer evening with friends and family . Baseball is a game you take your young boy to as you were taken by your father when you were young. Baseball is an integral part of Cincinnati and far transcends statistics Redleggs..you are way wrong. You live in Colorado..perhaps statistics is all you have.

You have no idea as to the type of owner Castellini is or will be.... anyone can say they want a winner. As it stands now this is a team that finished 72-90 last year. Winning you say..?

This city does not depend on the Reds for economic viabilty, your thesis is wrong

This city is not in a funk, perhaps you, your family and friends are..the majority of people living here are fine..just dealing with winter thats all

Don't make a sports team or any player your life dude
