Weathers flashback

Cito Gaston threw out the first pitch before Sunday’s Reds game with Toronto. That stirred a memory for David Weathers.

Gaston was Blue Jays manager in 1991 when Weathers first made to the big leagues. One night, Gaston went to mound and signaled Weathers in from the bullpen. Taking David Wells out of the game didn’t go quite like Gaston planned. Wells took the ball and threw toward left field when Gaston asked for it.

“The ball comes rolling out toward the bullpen,” Weathers said. “It’s like my second appearance. I thought: This isn’t how it’s supposed to go. I come in and Boomer and Cito are going at it in the tunnel.”

John -- Do you see any chance that Voltron wins a starting spot over Affeldt and Fogg? Thanks.

The Weathers flashback" account of the tunnel rumble between c. gaston and D wells reminds me of a Gaston encounter back in the day. Cito Gaston was a rookie outfielder for the (then) woeful San Diego Padres. The first time Gaston faced Bob Gibson, Cito was REALLY digging a hole at the plate. He looked up and saw Gibson glaring at him. Gibson said, "you better dig that hole a lot deeper, because I'm going to put you in it." C. Gaston proceeded to cover up the hole, smoothing it out until it was no longer discernable.

About the reds - as a lifelong fan going through the wonderful seventies, the good sixties, and mostly, the bad fifties, eighties, nineties through 2007 (excluding 1990 of course), I would like to see the reds play Votto & Bruce full time, along with starting Bailey and Cuento. With Griffey, Dunn, Harang and Arroyo, this would give them a good mix of vets and rookies.Let them play! don't tell me we couldn't win our typical 70 to 77 games with these rookies inserted. Let the future greatness the the reds begin now.

Stanton is horrible, Wethers has nothing. Period. I don'T want to see them in this team anymore.

I say start out with vets in the rotation, and the young guns in the pen:

Harang
Arroyo
Belisle
Affeldt
Fogg

Bailey
Volquez
Cueto
Coffey
Burton
Weathers
Cordero

Ever notice it says Reds Insider? Jack go somewhere else and start your own blog. No one cares about our daily routine.

And, Jack, please take your condescending, passive-aggressive blogging style with you. It’s gotten really old.

Ill be at the game today, I would have liked to have seen someone other than Affeldt, but I guess Ill see if he looks like a starter.

One thing is for sure, if Morneu (SP?) and Mauer are in the line up, he may not look great, as these guys are great contact hitters.

Ill post again tonight with my 2 cents on Affeldt as well as others.

kevin..jacks brother and his wife wife are staying at the Mariott Fairfield Inn ..I think thats in Brandenton. He told us it was a nice place.

From what we have read it would appear that Affeldt is better suited to long relief

OFF TOPIC - Are those ridiculous caps permanent?

Caps are spring only. They wore them last year as well.

Hey, I had a great get-together yesterday too! Julia, a registered veterinarian, and I drank water and ate pretzels with our whole family at the Motel 6, while we discussed the merits of using starch in our laundry. It was rather delightful! We also enjoy taking long walks on the beach, rubbing our noses together, and finding new and creative ways to annoy others through a variety of communiqué. If you're near the Motel 6 John, you should stop by!

...oh, wait...Julia just informed me that this is a Reds blog and not the Oxygen channel...I guess I should keep it focused on the Reds...
