Dusty on Bruce: "a little wary"

Jay Bruce's injury is NOT serious. He will like be back in a few days. But that doesn't mean Dusty Baker is not concerned.

“One thing that makes us a little wary is he’s had this a couple of times. At 20 years old, we’ve got to find a way to stop this. It’s rare that you have them this young, which makes you a little apprehensive about him as the center fielder. That’s a lot of running.”

On the healthy outfielder front, Baker raved about the improvement Chris Dickerson has made.

“He’s improved his bat a lot,” Baker said. “He’s a guy they don’t mention much but he’s a ball of ability. He has one of the best arms in camp. He’s one of the best runners, a good outfielder.

“He’s make some adjustments and improvements. I’ve seen more improvement out of him than anyone in camp – from what I saw in the beginning to now. He’s really paying attention. He’s doing some studying. That’s what you like to see. His ceiling may be higher than anybody here. When you see the speed, the arm, he could be a five-tool guy. He’s got the tools.”

Baker is talking about improvement since camp opened.

"That’s all I can do on: What I see. I’ve heard some things. I’ve seen improvement with the batting stances, hand position, feet. He’s had a lot of people talking to him, which is good but sort of confuses at times. I see a lot of improvement, big time, in a short period of time.”

Put him in RF and dump Griffey. Problem solved.

Great catch there on the misspell anonymous. I bet John wasn't aware of the correct spelling of back. Do you work for the Times by chance?

John, keep spending your time getting reports, scoops, and game details. Don't worry about grammar on a BLOG.

i'll bet my opening day tickets that Jay Bruce is manning CF for the louisville bats on March 31st (or whenever the bats open up).

and, it damn well better be hopper in CF and not freel.

Jay Bruce is rapidly turning from bright star of the future to the Rocco Baldelli of the Reds.

This team is in a world of hurt.

Last place in the Central this season, coming up!

shines some light on what Dusty thinks about Bruce starting the year in the majors doesn't it?

are you serious, the Reds are just fine, tell me how in world they are already in "last place" Is it because of a minor injury to Jay Bruce? Really come on learn the game

Cheviot Sports Authority - what an imbecile...

I agree Cheviot.. 12 million dollars a year for Griffey is hurting this club..and has for sometime. When we go to games you can actually see how marginal he has become as a defensive outfielder

Careful there Mr Anonymous, attack the post not the blogger.

Better yet, move him to left and get rid of Dunn

I'm not sure how you take one injury and compare Bruce to Baldelli. He is going to have to been injured for three more years to gain access into that club.

It'll take more than a minor injury to one ballplayer to sink into last place.

2 quad pulls and he's only 20? If he's "pull prone" he could develop into a Baldelli. You guys really do just bark at anything. Get a sense of humor and life.

Reds pitching still stinks and last place is a possibility (it all depends on the Pirates improving substantially, after all, we know the Reds are a .400 team).

Anon 11:28, why would Bruce man CF in Louisville and not CF in Cincy? Baker's point was that he shouldn't be manning CF at all.

Maybe Baker has a point about the injury concern, but I think he's just making excuses not to bring Bruce north with the team.

That's OK. The big club is going to need Bruce on team once Griffey gets hurt. Best for Bruce to not get hurt in the meantime.

Bloggers here can bitch and moan about Votto-vs-Hatte, the illogical argument that Griffey and Dunn waste space, the abnormal stats of Hopper and Keppinger... but it comes down to pitching. If it sucks again, the Reds suck again.

why does Cheviot care, they live in their own city so get your own pro team, Ken Griffey Junior is one of the best parts of the Reds...I get the feeling Hopper is going to get screwed over, no question he should be starting at center field

I HOPE Dickerson improved. That's all he could do. I saw him play last year and he was terrible. No plate discipline, looked bad in the field, did show some speed. I find it hard to believe he'll make the team this camp.

And of course he has no worries about our Right Fielders durability.

As someone with a PhD in English, let me say, ignore the idiot who cares about grammar....this is a baseball blog, get over yourself.

Also, cheviot, are you seriously suggesting that a rookie Bruce would be more valuable than one of the greatest players in baseball history (Griffey)? Im not saying Griff is still worth 12 M, and Im not saying that Bruce isnt worth more to the team this year, but is your immediate solution TRULY to bench Griffey for a rookie?
