Reds sign Patterson, Hairston

The Reds have signed Corey Patterson and Jerry Hairston Jr to minor-league deals.

"Patterson will come in and compete for the center field job," Reds GM Wayne Krivsky said. "Hairston is another versatile guy that can play infield/outfield. Patterson is 28 and Hairston is 31. They've got some experience, but we gave them no guarantees. They'll come in and compete."

This likely precludes the Reds from signing free agent center fielder Kenny Lofton.

"I'd rather not talk about individual guys," Krivsky said. "But we're pleased with the guys we have in right now."

Patterson, a left-handed power-speed hitter, hit .269 last season in 461 at-bats with the Orioles. He had eight home runs with 45 RBI and 37 steals in 46 attempts. His on-base percentage was .304. He really came on after the All-Star break, hitting .313 when he became a full-time starter.

In 2006 Patterson hit .276 with 16 homers and 53 RBI with 45 steals in 54 attempts. His on-base percentage was .314.

Patterson is a former blue-chip prospect who came up with the Cubs and made his major-league debut as a 21-year-old in 2000. In his career, he has 168 steals, 94 homers and 329 RBI and is a .258 hitter.

Hairston, a right-handed hitter, also has Cubs ties, playing with them in 2005 and 2006.

He hit .189 last season with Texas in 159 at-bats. He played all the outfield spots and shortstop, second base and third base. He's a lifetime .253 hitter with a .325 on-base percentage in 2,534 at-bats since 1998 with 112 career steals.

That's great... since these are minor league deals... low risk, high reward since they are both good veterans that can help the youngsters in the spring... I just hope we don't have Patterson leading off on opening day...

Hey John, any news on Jay Bruce?

Dusty Baker's still managing this team, right? Then Jay Bruce better go ahead and buy a condo in Louisville.

Anyone want to bet me the OF'ers on the roster March 31st AREN'T Dunn, Griffey, Freel, Hopper, and Patterson?

Lofton > Patterson. Hell, Dickerson > Patterson. I don't get this the deal.

Hairston doesn't bother me...he's just this year's Mark Bellhorn. Doubt he'll see GABP unless we have some more injuries.

I am not opposed to the acquisition, but with Freel and Hopper battling for the starting job (not to mention Bruce), why the necessity to sign Patterson? Could Freel and/or Hopper be on the move?

Maybe they can use them to trade for Shaun Rogers...

How can a CF (Patterson) be talked into signing a minor league contract with the Reds when he is only 28 and made $4.3M last year when he knows they have the TOP, TOP, TOP CF can't miss prospect ready to go. He also knows that they have at least two other better leadoff hitters. Because Dusty made him a promise to allow the Reds to be a worse team so that he can play, that's how.

The Reds probably realized that after they traded away the Natural they didn't have anyone to play CF.

Corey Patterson was the #3 pick in the 1998 draft and was supposed to be the Cubs CF for years.

For awhile the Cubs were reluctant to trade Patterson for fear of repeating the trade that sent HOF CF Lou Brock to the Cards in 1964.

Darren Lewis is still available. He was Dusty's first CF in 1993 and he in only 40!

at 8:34 PM Blogger redfuture said...

Whatever happened to Marvin Benard, Dusty's CF of 1996 and 1998-2001?

at 8:37 PM Blogger redfuture said...

I had forgotten about the great Tsuyoshi Shinjo, Dusty's CF and initial leadoff hitter of 2002!!

I guess you really could call us Cubs East now.

The Reds aren't looking to play Bruce in CF. Dusty took the first possible out by saying that Bruce's quad could be problematic if he has to regularly cover that much field.

If he's not gonna get a starting job they should send him to Louisville. There's not point in sitting him on the bench and giving him 6 AB's a week.

But the previous comments are right - why sign Patterson when you have Freel and Hopper? I agree that it's low risk, but is he an upgrade over either? I'd rather see Hattey lead-off than a speed guy who has historically had difficulty getting on-base.

Hairston's in the Mitchell Report...

To think I had been concerned about the $3M wasted on the mop-up reliever Stanton. Now I'm concerned about the wasted $3M on a more impactful position, the manager. At least McKannin was going to use the developed guys and others that WK brought in on his own accord.

Competition is a good thing. Let Bruce start the season at AAA, I'm sure if he tears it up again he'll be up soon enough and in CF.

In the meantime, we got Freel (injury-prone and capable of playing just about anywhere), Hopper (a good CF, but not an everyday option), and now Patterson (who could flame out and be a solid cog in L'ville or god forbid spell Freel and Hopper occassionally until Bruce can't be denied).

I don't think this signing is great, but I certainly don't mind it. And Dusty is gonna try to win, not play favorites with old players, that's foolish thinking.

Let's all just take a deep breath and enjoy the spring...cuz God knows we never enjoy August.

WTF?!? A below average hitting centerfielder who has a difficult time getting on base! I guess we just hung out Hopper and Freel to dry. Considering he's left-handed, I reckon we just let Bruce know that he will be in Louisville all year. Not the 'change' I was hoping for this year.
Disgusting move.

One good thing about Dusty is that he say's things to the press that mirror what he says to the FO. You can see that he jumps on opportunities to make his points and get his way.

at 9:05 PM Blogger redfuture said...

Dusty, don't demand less of a starting player than you demanded of yourself. Baker's first year as a regular he delivered a .383 OBP. Bruce can come close to that. Cory has proven that he can't 6 times of 6 tries.

For the love of god, why are we signing Corey Patterson? I, for one, believe these signings show the influence of Jocketty and Baker, and the diluting of a direction for this franchise. Too many cooks in the kitchen, too many hands in the cookie jar...whatever cliche applies. Whereas before it looked like we have a modus operandi, or cadence in the moves we have made...team had a hole, weplugged it. SS, Gonzalez. SP, Arroyo. RP, Cordero. Since Baker and Jocketty have come aboard, we have signed....Affeldt, Fogg, Patterson, Hairston. Ugh... Are these REALLY the signings that are going to make a difference?!?! Play Jay Bruce, play Jeff Keppinger, play Cueto and Bailey..take your lumps, get better, maybe even get scary good. To me, the Patterson signing especially, along with Affeldt and Fogg represent selling out to the lowest common denominator to try and be 81-81.

Bruce may as well be polishing hardwood floors this year!

Dusty says, "You've got to find a way to stop these minor leg problems before they become major. Its rare you have them this young. It makes you a little apprehensive as far as being a centerfielder, because in his career, that's a lot of running out there."

I say, "You've got to find a way to prevent .296 OBP players from leading off before you lose games. It's rare that a player like that leads off. Because that's a lot of lost opportunities to score runs."

What the heck was I thinking when I bought that weekend 20 pack? I'm 30 minutes from Louisville and 2.5 hrs from Cincy. I could have easly bought season tickets to the Louisville Bats and gotten to see our best players play instead of has-beens or never-have-beens.

at 10:07 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Are you frickin' kidding me? Wayne Krivsky had better take control of this situation before Baker throws this team right down the trash heap!!!

at 10:54 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow, I'm not too happy about this one. I know it is a minor league deal, but Patterson will win the job based on experience. Bruce can hit .450 and probably not make the team.

If the Reds were going to bring in someone to increase competition, I would have rather seen Kenny Lofton. At least Lofton can get on base and strikes out much less than Patterson.

Patterson is going to have to play much better than he ever has to justify wasting Hopper or Freel or keeping Bruce in AAA this season.

I intensely dislike the continual obsession with signing outfielders when the pitching is so bad here, though I like Patterson's speed--he'll need to steal 70 bases and bat + .300 and hit 30 HRs before I'm happy about seeing Bruce not start and Freel or Hopper dealt away (unless we get a special pitcher, not a special-needs senior citizen pitcher).

The more I think about this move the more I like it.
Someone else mentioned it, and mlbtraderumors.com also said that if bruce is kept in the minors then we can add a yr before free-agency for this kid. Sorry fellow reds fans i want to see the kid play too but if we can make a smart business play in a small-market then you have to do it. Case closed

everyone wave to our new CF, he'll be platooning LH/RH w/ hopper

The Reds will be a .400 team again this year unless they play their young stars AND the young stars come through. So yeah, why not just keep the young stars in AAA or platoons here while the team stinks again?

It's not about the fans or being competitive. It's about trying to match Mike Brown for cheapness, right?

Jay Bruce is talented enough to be a ML starter, PERIOD.

Heck, with the quality of pitching here, he could be a #5 starter too in addition to playing the OF.

Oh well, can't expect much brilliance from the fruit and vegetable crew at GABP.

This is baseball, not "keep the bananas in the bag 'til they ripen" ball!

For 2008, a season where the Reds are a long shot to win anything, PLAY BRUCE FROM DAY 1.

I like Patterson as a pinch runner only. He's a good guy to have as the 6th OF, stating in Louisville and rady to come up if there is an injury.

I liked Hairston and though his talent was wasted by the Orioles and Cubs. Now, he's a utility infielder at best and we don;t need 1. Put him in Louisville too.

I don't understand why the Reds need another left handed bat? They are left handed top heavy already. Looks like a platoon In CF, Baker has been yapping all spring about bringing in someone to leadoff. He has been wanting his old players since day one. Bruce will start the year in AAA, this just seals the deal. Baker is a double talker, I don't believe that Bruce will be in Cincy until mid-season and after they trade Dunn. I am not crazy about turning the young SP's into bullpen long relievers like he has talked about. All I see the Reds doing is spinning their wheels, stocking up on Left handed hitters, that's not going to smoke the pipe!
